In Practical Applications
Constructability and BIM
Building Information Modeling continues to
become more embedded into the standard
practices for delivering projects, yet the ability to
easily and seamlessly integrate model content
remains a challenge.
This presentation will explore best practices for
the successful planning of BIM implementation,
both on a project and within an
organization. These best practices have been
identified through detailed research initiatives
focused on BIM execution planning. Additional
research focused on the implementation of BIM
for energy retrofit projects will also be
presented. The session will conclude with a
discussion of the integration of BIM within
integrative project delivery strategies.
John Messner
Dr. Messner is the Director of the Computer
Integrated Construction (CIC) Research Program
at Penn State and a Professor of Architectural
Engineering. He specializes in Building
Information Modeling (BIM) and virtual

currently developing the Owner’s Guide to BIM as
a buildingSMART alliance project, and they
previously completed the BIM Project Execution
Planning Guide.
Dr. Messner is also a Task Lead in the Building
Energy Informatics task at the Consortium for
Building Energy Innovation (CBEI), which
focuses on advanced energy retrofit projects. He
has received National Science Foundation grants
for investigating the application of advanced
visualization in construction engineering education
and the AEC Industry. As a part of these grants, he
led the development of two Immersive
Construction (ICon) Labs which are large, 3 screen
immersive display systems for visualizing design
and construction information.
He previously worked as a project manager on
various construction projects for a large general
contractor and an infrastructure development
company. He has taught courses in virtual
prototyping; BIM; strategic management in
construction; international construction; and
project management at Penn State.

President’s Corner
It’s hard to believe that January 2015 has already
come and gone. I hope that all of our NCC
ASHRAE members had an enjoyable and relaxing
holiday season. Speaking of the holidays, our
Annual Winter Party was held at Hotel Monaco in
Old Town Alexandria on January 10th. The event
was a great success as one hundred members of the
area’s HVAC community came together to
celebrate.
Looking forward to February, the entire NCC
ASHRAE Board of Governors is very excited about
our chapter meeting on February 4th. This meeting
will be a special one for a few different reasons.
First, we will be joined by a few very distinguished
ASHRAE guests.
Society President
Tom Phoenix will
be in attendance
in order to deliver
his ASHRAE
presidential
address and to
help us recognize
a recent ASHRAE
Distinguished
Service Award
winner.
The award
winner, the
Honorable Katherine Hammack, has been our
nation’s Assistant Secretary of the Army for
Installations, Energy, and Environment since 2010.
6
She is the primary advisor to the Secretary of the
Army and Chief of Staff of the Army on all Army
matters related to Installation policy, oversight, and
coordination of energy security and management.
She is also responsible for policy and oversight of
sustainability. We’re very excited to have her as a
guest.
We will also be celebrating Past President’s night at
this month’s chapter meeting. A large contingent of
NCC ASHRAE Past President’s will be in
attendance, and I look forward to recognizing them
and thanking them for their contributions to NCC
ASHRAE.
Lastly, I’d like to remind everyone that we are still
participating in a large number of student activities
events. These events require a large number of
volunteers, and I encourage anyone who might be
interested in attending an event to reach out to our
Student Activities Committee Chairs, Mary Opalka
and Mikelann Scerbo. They can be reached at
ashraenccstudentactivities@gmail.com.

Technology Award Winners - 2015
Submission Schedule
Chapter submission deadline: April 9
Regional submission deadline: May 15
Society submission deadline: September 1
Frequently Asked Questions:
My project is still in construction; shall I submit the project to my Chapter or wait and submit after 1-year of
utility data is obtained?
If the entrant wishes to ultimately submit to the Society competition, then he/she should wait until they have all
the necessary backup data and information in hand by the time of the Regional competition. First place winners
of the Regional competition are eligible for advancement to the Society level and may not postpone their
submission beyond the current competition cycle.
Should I use the short form or long form for submission to the Regional competition?
Society is encouraging the Regions to use the same standards in judging entries that apply to the Society level
competition. Furthermore, if the entrant wishes to ultimately submit to the Society competition, there is only
approximately 1 month between notification by the Region and the Society level deadline to prepare the
necessary documents. For these reasons, entrants are encouraged to submit to the Region using the long form,
although the short form will still be accepted.
If you have any questions regarding Tech Awards or would like to obtain any additional information, please
contact Omar Hawit at finance@nccashrae.org .
