Product Information
®
SETAQUA ECO5000 is a high performance fatty acid modified acrylic binder developed for low
VOC Paints achieving extremely high gloss with extended open time and wet edge resulting in
®
excellent flow and levelling characteristics. SETAQUA ECO5000 is APEO free and has dual
crosslinking mechanism. Due to its unique design, this binder does not require any coalescing
solvents for film formation at temperatures down to 5 °C while maintaining excellent block
®
resistance properties. Innovative technology of SETAQUA ECO5000 enables formulating high
gloss paints with no or minimum added wet-edge extenders which lead to coatings with minimal
VOC content which comply with Green Star Rating requirements. The addition of a small amount
of wet edge extenders results in excellent overall appearance, gloss and flow characteristics while
maintaining the VOC levels below 50 grams per litre where according to APAS document D181,
the acceptable average VOC level for interior high gloss coatings is equal or less than 75 grams
per litre1.

Formulation Advice
The type and concentration of raw materials in a paint formulation will play a significant role in the
performance of any coating. Careful selection of these components is required; as selecting the
wrong additive or the wrong combination of additives will impair the performance of SETAQUA®
ECO5000.
Formulation advice for SETAQUA® ECO5000 is given below. Please be aware that some additives
may require dilution to avoid the possibility of aggregation.
Note: The information provided is only a recommendation and the appropriate concentration of
coalescent and additives must be determined by the formulator.
► Dispersing Agents
Successful formulations based on SETAQUA® ECO5000 have been formulated using
Disperbyk 199 and/or Orotan 731. Concentrations of these additives vary depending on the
type and concentration of pigment being dispersed.
► Defoamers
SETAQUA® ECO5000 is compatible with a wide range of polysiloxane defoamers such as BYK
022 and BYK 093.
► Surfactants
Formulations based on SETAQUA® ECO5000 using APEO free phosphate ester surfactants
such as Dextrol OC-6025 have been shown to improve tinter acceptance properties.
SETAQUA® ECO5000 is also compatible with many APEO free and APEO surfactants
including Triton CF-10 and Teric N9.
► Thickeners
Good results have been found with SETAQUA® ECO5000 when thickened with the non-ionic
associative thickeners such as Acrysol RM2020, Aquaflow NHS-350 and Aquaflow XLS-525.
Paints based on SETAQUA® ECO5000 would also benefit from true Thixotropes such as BYK
420 in achieving acceptable anti settling properties without negatively impacting the levelling
properties.
► Titanium Dioxide
Tronox CR-828 has been found to give good results with SETAQUA® ECO5000.
► Extenders
Omyacarb and talc extenders both give good gloss reduction in SETAQUA® ECO5000.
► pH and pH adjustment
The self cross-linking mechanism in SETAQUA® ECO5000 is not influenced by pH and high
performance coatings based on this resin can be formulated between a pH of 8 to 8.5. pH can
be adjusted by secondary amines such as pHLEX 410 or AMP95.
► Open time and wet edge extension
The wet edge of SETAQUA® ECO5000 can be extended with propylene glycol. It is also
compatible with non-VOC wet-edge extenders such as Byketol PC.

Comparative Data
The performance of SETAQUA® ECO5000 is highlighted in the following starting point
formulations. It is important to note that the full potential performance of SETAQUA® ECO5000 is
achieved only when product is used in a complete undercoat-topcoat system on MDF or timber.

Comparative Data
Above high gloss starting point formulation (EP2312007) based on SETAQUA® ECO5000 has
been compared to three commercially available white waterborne acrylic gloss trim enamels.
Testing focussed on features required of waterborne enamels, when compared to their
solventborne counterparts, such as high 20 degree gloss levels, open time and depth of
image.
► 20 and 60 Degree Gloss on Glass
150µm wet films were drawn down on glass and left to cure for 24 hours at 25°C and 50% RH
before being measured for gloss. Samples were then re-measured after seven days to check
for any further loss of gloss. SETAQUA® ECO5000 was the only paint that showed 20 degree
gloss levels of more than 70% which brings the performance of product closer to that of
Solventborne enamels.

► 20 and 60 Degree Gloss on MDF
For this test a topcoat-undercoat system based on SETAQUA® ECO5000 was tested against a
commercial waterborne acrylic undercoat-topcoat system and also a commercial long oil alkyd
based topcoat on a waterbased acrylic undercoat.
The primer undercoat used for SETAQUA® ECO5000 system is based on starting point
formulation EP2312009.
For this test the undercoat and two layers of top coat were applied at a spread rate of 16 sqm
per litre.

SETAQUA® ECO5000 offers formulators a significant leap in the performance of waterborne
acrylic enamel coatings, especially in terms of 20 degree gloss levels and depth of image
bringing their performance closer to that of solventborne alkyds. It is important to note that due
to better holdout of the undercoat based on SETAQUA® ECO5000, final system gloss is much
higher than that of waterborne acrylic enamel.
► Block Resistance
150µm wet films were drawn down and left to cure for 24 hours and one week at 25°C.
Samples were judged as per ASTM 4946-89(2003) where 10 is no block and 0 is complete
failure. A force of 40 g/cm2 was applied to the coatings for 30 minutes at 50°C.

► Stain Resistance
To evaluate stain resistance, a couple of common staining products were applied to the films
for 15 minutes before being washed off with cold water. The test was performed on 100µm wet
films that were cured for one week at 25°C. Films were judged immediately after the stains
were removed and scored on a scale from 0 to 5, in which 0 means total marking of the film
and 5 means no mark was left on the film.

► Open time
Samples were drawn down onto Leneta charts at 150µm, and damaged by scribing crosses
into the wet film with a pipette immediately after application. They were then left for a
prescribed time. The damaged area was then repaired by brushing 10 horizontal and 10
vertical strokes over the damaged area. Observations were made one minute before the time
where a cross is still visible in the dried film of the coating after last brush stroke.
For meaningful comparison of open time, results have been discussed as a factor of paint
VOC. Studying the commercial paints, VOCs can vary between 45 and 75 grams per litre.
Hence paints based on SETAQUA® ECO5000 were prepared at close to zero, 48 and 75
grams per litre.
As can be seen in the following graph, paints based on SETAQUA® ECO5000 lead to 30 to 50
percent improvement in open time, compared to standard commercial acrylic based enamels
at equal VOC levels.

Storage
®
SETAQUA ECO5000 should not be stored at temperatures below 5ºC or above 35ºC. Avoid
exposure to direct sunshine. Under normal storage conditions (5°C - 35°C, away from extremes)
sealed, unopened containers of this material would have a shelf life of 12 months from the date of
manufacture. If it is stored for longer than 12 months, it is recommended that the product is
rechecked for suitability in the intended application.
SETAQUA® ECO5000 is protected from attack by microorganisms for at least 6 months.
Additional preservative should be added to guard against microbial attack when the dispersion is
being stored for longer periods of time and tank hygiene measures must be adopted. More
information can be obtained through your local area manager
Future work
