RELIGIOUS STUDIES 90A: Introductory Topics in Religious Studies
Topic: Religion and its Monsters
This course is designed to introduce you to some major theoretical and methodological moves in the academic
study of religion by exploring the complex and contradictory relation of religious thought and practice to
order and chaos (in the West). The course divides into two sections: religiosity in the ancient Mediterranean
and religiosity in the modern West. Themes addressed include the politics of creation narratives, suffering and
historical trauma, science and secularization, as well as race. Our overarching purpose will be to analyze
religion as a form of cultural memory. We will pay special attention to how 'older,' more traditional forms of
religion interact with secularized forms of religiosity in the modern West.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES C161: Religion in Early India
Also cross listed as South Asian C 161.
Designed as a two-semester sequence, these courses are an introduction to the religions that have their origin
on the Indian subcontinent--Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, and tribal religions--as well as those that
originated in other regions such as Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism. Organizing this material
chronologically rather than teaching it by separate religious traditions facilitates comparisons and promotes an
understanding not only of the differences among these religions but also some of their commonalities in
philosophy, theology, and praxis.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES 190: Topics in Religious Studies
Section 1: Religion and Secularization
This course will introduce you to the work of Michel Foucault through his analysis of knowledge-power
relations as a process of Christianization in depth (his phrase for the complex historical processes we dub
'secularization' and their complex dependence on forms of religiosity). We will start with a few essays in
which Foucault sets out his notions of "pastoral power" and" governmentality," and then work chronologically
