Monroe Township High School Course Syllabus & Expectations: AP Macroeconomics Ms. Terri Weiss tweiss@monroe.k12.nj.us Business Department Teacher Workroom G214 Course Description AP Macroeconomics will provide students with a thorough understanding of the principles of economics that apply to an economic system as a whole. The course places particular emphasis on the study of national income and price-level determination, and also develops students’ familiarity with economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics. The course will also look at macroeconomic issues such as the political impact on economic systems and the economic decision making process as well as through current events and global trends. Analysis & Application Textbook/Materials The following textbook will be used for this course: Economics Principles, Problems, and Policies - AP Edition, McConnell, Brue, and Flynn 20th Edition, McGraw Hill, 2015 The following workbook will also be used for this course: 5 Steps to a 5, AP Macroeconomics 2014-2015, Dodge, McGraw Hill, 2013 Students will be expected to use their iPad as a tool to access the class wiki page, eBackpack and other online resources. General Expectations § Everyone in the classroom will be treated with respect. § Everyone’s conduct and behavior should reflect good judgment. § Students are prepared and on time for each class. This includes a notebook, a notebook, folder and their iPad [charged prior to the start of the school day]. Every student is also required to come to class with an appropriate writing utensil (pen or pencil). § Everyone is expected to remain in class. Minimize trips to the bathroom and when possible, should be conducted when they are least disruptive to the class. § Everyone is expected to contribute to the discussion and learning activities. § Everyone is expected to communicate professionally. Your school email account should be used. Emails will be responded to within 1 school business day. § Everyone is expected to use his or her iPad as a learning tool. Assessment 10% Participation/Preparation Students have an opportunity to earn 5 points per day for participation/preparation. 5=Student came to class prepared, participated and completed class work. 4=Student was not completely prepared and/or was not fully engaged in the lesson. 3=Student was unprepared and/or was not fully engaged in the lesson. 2=Student either was unprepared, or did not participate for at least half of the class. 1=Student was unprepared and/or did not participate, complete assignments and/or disruptive during class. 0=Cut class. 20% Class Work Students have an opportunity to earn 20 points per activity for class work. 20=Excellent work; complete and accurate. 17= Good work; complete and mostly accurate. 15= Satisfactory work; mostly complete and/or some accurate. 13=Poor work; incomplete and/or inaccurate. 0=Failure; work not submitted. 10% Homework Students have an opportunity to earn 5 points per assignment for homework 5=Excellent work; complete and accurate 4= Good work; complete and mostly accurate 3= Satisfactory work; mostly complete and/or some accurate 1-2=Poor work; incomplete and/or inaccurate 0=Failure; work not submitted **All homework is due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise specified. Students who are absent are required to turn in missing assignments according to the school policy. [One day for each day absent.] 60% Projects, Quizzes and Tests Students have an opportunity to earn 100 points per project, quiz or test. Rubrics will be distributed when the project is assigned. All Projects are due on the date assigned. If a student is absent on the due date, they must submit the project on the day they return. Students have an opportunity to earn 100 points per quiz or test. Study guides are provided prior to each test. All tests are announced in advance. Quizzes, when given will be based on material from homework or lectures/class activities. Students who are absent the class before a test must still take the test on the assigned date. Students who are absent on the day of the test must make up the test according to the school policy. Classroom Preparation Students must come to class with a notebook, folder and their iPad [charged prior to the start of the school day]. Every student is also required to come to class with an appropriate writing utensil (blue or black ink only). Students may not use calculators in class for quizzes or tests. Additional Help Study group sessions are offered prior to each test after school. Dates are announced in class and on the course wiki page. Other help is available to all students Monday through Thursday by appointment. Refer to MTHS Student Handbook for other policies and procedures. AP EXAM INFORMATION Exam Name: AP Macroeconomics Exam Date: Wednesday, May 11th, 12pm Exam Format: 70-minute multiple-choice section [2/3 of student’s exam score] and a 60-minute free-response section [1/3 of student’s exam score]. Some questions in the free-response section require graphical analysis . The free-response section begins with a mandatory 10-minute reading period . During this period, students are advised to read each of the questions, sketch graphs, make notes, and plan their answers. Students then have 50 minutes to write their answers.
