Main Street, Suite 800 Rochester, NY 14614 (585) 546-5110 ext. 112 kstowell@cdsadr.org Basic Information: The Center for Dispute Settlement is seeking a consultant to oversee the Fit for Life Program. The program is expected to run from November 2008 — June 2009. For over thirty years, the Center for Dispute Settlement has worked to create conflict resolving communities by helping to identify the capacity and resources within individuals and the community to effectively resolve disputes quickly, informally and peacefully. Established in 1973 by the American Arbitration Association, the Center for Dispute Settlement was the first of its kind in New York State and among the first three dispute resolution centers in the Country. The Center for Dispute Settlement provides alternative dispute resolution processes for all eight counties in the 7th Judicial District of New York State. These processes include conciliation, mediation, arbitration and facilitation. Training is offered in the areas of mediation, arbitration, facilitation, conflict resolution, conflict management and anger management. Fit for Life Program Overview: Fit for Life is a youth educational program featuring activities which includes life skills training and skill development that focus on conflict resolution processes including, anger management, negotiation, conflict management and mediation skill development, complemented by the use of the arts, sports and entertainment. The program is a collaborative partnership with Youth Lifeline America, founded by former NFL Super Bowl Champion, and Rochester native, Roland Williams. The program is administered utilizing an approachable but disciplined method of teaching life skills and educational elements including Conflict Resolution. Youth will actively participate in mediation training classes/sessions utilizing the Working Together to Resolve Conflict Peer Mediation Curriculum and Working Together to Resolve Conflict Resolution Curriculum for conflict management and anger management sessions utilizing the D.R.A.M.A (Dispute Resolution And Managing Anger) curriculum. 2 Proposals Should: Include a one page outline to incorporate the following activities: Youth Peace Camp — Week of February 2009 o During the school's Winter Break participants will participate in a series of half-day trainings, team building, and skill development activities Monitoring of Academic Progress Component — November 2008 — June 2009 o Monthly reporting on academic standing of participants o Follow up and referrals for additional academic help/tutoring Life Skills Workshops/Training — Weekly meetings — Dates TBD based on youth participants input o Activities to encourage healthy lifestyle choices o Professional perspectives provided in the areas of: Conflict Debriefing Diversity/Cultural Competency Esteem development Financial literacy Leadership skills Team building Health and Fitness Nutrition Sports, Arts, Career Exploration Events — Throughout the term of the program — Dates TBD based on specific schedules of events o Participants will have the opportunity to attend local college fairs, on-line career exploration, sporting, arts and cultural events Measurements of a Successful Project: Consultant will demonstrate a decrease in involvement in conflicts that escalate into aggression Consultant will demonstrate an increased knowledge of conflict resolution, anger management and negotiation techniques for program participants Consultant will document the increased exposure to educational opportunities Consultant will demonstrate increased participation in physical activities Consultant will document program participants increased exposure to healthy life choices Consultant will provide Facilitation in conflict resolution and anger management at the Youth Lifeline Sports Camp in June 2009 Assumptions and Agreements: The project dates are from December 3, 2008 — June 30, 2009* (Possibility of an extension through December 31, 2009). Consultant will be working with economically disadvantaged youth ages 13 — 17 currently enrolled in the Rochester City School District’s I'm Ready Community Learning Center in Rochester, NY. 3 Consultant will work with three (3) groups of 25 youth at 10 week intervals over the course of the 30 week project period. It is expected the Consultant's weekly time requirement will not exceed 2.5 hours per week; except during the week of the Youth Peace Camp. Selection criteria: The Center for Dispute Settlement will give preference to applicants who provide demonstrates support of The Center's mission, "To use and promote peaceful dispute resolution processes throughout our communities." The ideal applicant subscribes to the notion of self-determination and empowers others to be "in-charge" of their own destiny. The Fit for Life program will involve a tremendous amount organization, coordination, and the ability to navigate various systems. Applicants must have experience working with adolescents and demonstrated ability to relate to youth.
