Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, inc. ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE OrganizatiOnal PrOFile Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. The Founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as “a part of” the general community rather than “apart from” the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged by his own merits, rather than his family background or affluence without regard to race or nationality. They desired for their fraternity to exist as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the “inclusive we” rather than the “exclusive we”. From its inception, the Founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they held a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This deep conviction was mirrored in the Fraternity’s motto, “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity”. The Mission of the Fraternity is: To become the leading proactive community service organization focusing on issues that positively impact males in our communities. Today, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization of leaders. No longer a single entity, members of the Fraternity have been instrumental in the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation ( 501c-3), the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and The National Sigma Beta Club Foundation (501c-3)“ The official male pre-college mentoring organization of the fraternity. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, founded in 1920 with the assistance of Phi Beta Sigma, is the sister organization of the Fraternity with over 100,000 women worldwide. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity as it approaches its 100th Anniversary Centennial Celebration has over 550 chapters both Alumni and Collegiate with over 125, 000 men worldwide. This global membership of educated and professional men from ages 20 and above and yes there are men in the organization who are over 90 years old. These men earn from entry level salaries out of college of $26,000.00 to salaries of over $200,000.00. We are proud to have in our membership ranks; University Presidents, US Congressman such as John Lewis, a former President of the United States of America in William “Bill” Clinton, Former US Department of Education Director, medical doctor, top names athletes, such as Emmitt Smith, heads of states in African countries, elected officials at all levels of government and that list goes on. The men of Phi Beta Sigma over the years have and continue to be a powerful force in the world communities working to improve the quality of life for all people. contact information: 145 Kennedy Street, nW, Washington, Dc 20011-5294 | P: (202) 726-5434 | F:(202) 882-1681 | W: www.pbs100.org PrOminent men OF Phi Beta Sigma PROMINENT MEN OF PHI BETA SIGMA Over the century SponSorShip OppOrtunities OVER THE CENTURY Increase your brand visibility and celebrate your diversity and inclusion initiatives in our publications as a sponsor.
