Welcome
Welcome to our world of stories!
Telling Tales is now seven years old
and it feels great. Wonderful new
developments are happening all the
time.
This year Penguin Random House
asked us to help launch international
bestselling author Neil Pasricha’s
first children’s book, Awesome is
Everywhere, at our festival! Nimbus
has flown their star, Sheree Fitch, in
from the East and Metis storyteller,
David Bouchard has arrived from
out West. As if that wasn’t exciting
enough, TVOKids has joined as a
sponsor of our Music Stage, and
we are delighted that Hamilton
Best Start Network have chosen
to celebrate their 10th birthday
party with us in the large meadow.
Everything is awesome!!!!
and constantly growing . There
are countless organizations,
individuals, volunteers, sponsors
and supporters of every kind that
must be thanked today. Without
everyone’s contribution, large and
small, we simply would not be
able to offer this festival free of
charge. Please join us in saluting
our host partners: Rotary Club of
Hamilton, Hamilton Public Library,
Hamilton Conservation Authority
and Westfield Heritage Village. We
also wish to extend special thanks
to TD Bank Group and over 20 local
Rotary Clubs for their support at
the platinum level. The commitment
of Hamilton’s public and Catholic
school boards to offer families free
transportation from several schools
is truly heartwarming. Please take a
second to review the complete list of
supporters highlighted at the back
of this program. We thank one and
all whole-heartedly for believing in
the importance of this festival.
When you leave this magical world
and pass back through the gates
of time, we hope you will consider
helping us further with a donation
of any size. Your generosity will help
us to build the festival and support
literacy all year round.
Have an unforgettable day. Let your
imagination soar!

The Venue
About Westfield Heritage Village
Westfield Heritage Village first opened in 1964 and has grown to encompass
more than 35 historic buildings, a diverse artifact collection of over 25,000
objects and a dedicated group of more than 400 volunteers.
Photo: Lisa Hunter
The village is set on 400 acres of
unspoiled natural woodlands and
meadows, with several well-marked
nature trails and a rare TH&B steam
train. Visitors are encouraged to
wander and explore Westfield’s
fascinating historical buildings, such
as the blacksmith shop, log homes
and general store. You will have
an opportunity to chat with a wide
variety of village characters about
life in the 1800s and early 1900s.
Find out what books they were
excited about in their time; many of
these stories are still popular today.
Westfield Heritage Village offers a
wide range of public programs and
special events, including Haunted
Halloween, Christmas programs,
Maple Syrup Festival and the always
delicious Ice Cream Carnival. The
village is open to the public on
Sundays and holidays from March
until the end of October.
Westfield is a favourite destination
for teachers and students, offering
a range of hands-on, curriculumbased education programs within
Westfield’s unique historic village
setting. Westfield is also a popular
location for vintage weddings .
Brides and grooms can take their
vows in the Mountsberg Church or
on the village bandstand, have their
photograph taken at the covered
bridge or beside the locomotive and
complete the day with a reception at
the Ironwood Hall.

Our Mission
is to build a national festival that promotes children’s stories and a love of
reading, while raising awareness and support for literacy in our community.
Our Vision
is to be the best children’s literary festival in Canada.
Telling Tales "Why" graphic_Layout 1 2014-06-26 1:39 PM Page 1
S
tories connect us to our past, our
future, and each other. Through
stories we bond with our family, our
friends, and our heroes. We learn, we dream and we
grow. Telling Tales celebrates stories. We do this by
bringing together Canadian authors, illustrators,
musicians and storytellers with their audience – our
children. Telling Tales is a free, one day outdoor Festival,
and a year-round commitment to promoting literacy
and inspiring a love of reading.
6
Mission
How do we support
literacy in our Community?
The idea for this festival began
with the Rotar y belief that by
improving and encouraging literacy
we can do much to tackle poverty.
Our community of supporters are
passionately committed to offering
all of our youth the encouragement
and inspiration they need to become
lifelong readers and storytellers.
After the festival costs have been
covered, our proceeds are shared
eve n ly b et we e n l o c a l lite ra c y
programs and the festival’s future
fund. Rotary Clubs that are involved
with Telling Tales at the silver level
or higher form a committee to
jointly decide how best to allocate
these funds.
This year we hope to raise a further
$10,000 for literacy. At the time of
writing, we are on track to cover our
operating costs.
In 2014 Telling Tales helped support
the following organizations:
•Hamilton’s very successful Rotary
Summer
Literacy
program
(run by teacher and returning
Telling Tales presenter, Robert
Blunsdon) was awarded $5,000
to help provide a summer literacy
camp experience for over 2,500
primary and junior students from
high needs communities around
the City.
•Early Literacy Hamilton (ELH)
received $4,000 to expand their
Read to Your Baby program which
purchases books that doctors and
health practitioners give to new
parents at their child’s 18-month
enhanced well-baby visit, along
with a “prescription” to read with
their child daily and an invitation
to get their child a library card.
ELH is a founding community
partner of Telling Tales and a
community wide collaboration
of partners who share the goal
of improving literacy levels for all
children in the Hamilton region.
•The Hamilton Literacy Council
(HLC) was given $2,000 to
support their invaluable work in
assisting adults with low literacy
skills. HLC offers literacy services
for parents to help them support
their children in school. The HLC
is a founding community partner
of Telling Tales and every year
helps to run the Giant Book Swap
& Shop.

Thanks to generous support from
across our community, meaningful
steps are being taken to inspire
a love of reading and storytelling
in our youth. To everyone who
has helped us in some small way
– we thank you! Because of your
generosity, Telling Tales has been
able to contribute over $85,000 to
literacy projects in our community
since 2009!
When we have truly strengthened
literacy programs locally, to the
point where we can see our literacy
levels rise and the need within
our community diminish, we will
know that we have played a part in
helping many to live fuller and more
rewarding lives.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be
the change you want to see in the
world.” His empowering words
are the motivation behind the
inspiring Be the Change! series.
Thoughtfully written text and
child-centered examples introduce
topics such as identifying areas
for change, learning about and
communicating for a cause,
creating an action plan, and
overcoming challenges.

What does it take to get a children’s book published? What are children’s book
publishers looking for? How do booksellers pick the books they sell? Let our panel of

Random House Canada Children’s Publishing Group), Lynne Missen (Publishing
Director, Penguin Canada Young Readers) and Maria Martella (Owner, Tinlids Inc.),

“I attended this seminar and it was a great chance to be surrounded by
professionals in the industry and get real answers and insights. The Book Centre
is an excellent connector, and the opportunity to get exposure with publishers,
editors, agents and other writers is inspiring.”
