ELAC Fall 2008 Start at ELAC…Transfer to any University! UC Berkeley TAP The University of California, Berkeley Community College Transfer Center’s mission is to assist CA community colleges students who aspire to transfer to UC Berkeley. Transfer Center Coordinators provide individual student academic counseling, transcript evaluation, educational planning and review, student/applicant follow-up, transfer applicant advocacy, workshops on transfer issues, and admitted student follow-up. Exceptional community college students who meet certain income and academic eligibility requirements are also given the opportunity to participate in a 6 to 8 week academic enrichment program at UC Berkeley during the summer. Students either enroll in a Berkeley summer session course or they are paired with a Berkeley faculty member with whom they conduct research. If you are considering transferring to the University of California, Berkeley, please contact our East Los Angeles College/Berkeley Transfer Coordinator, Aarti Mehta. Ms. Mehta is available for one-on-one meetings and group information sessions. Her visitation schedule is available at the ELAC Transfer Center. Mehta on campus, please fill out the UC Berkeley Community College Transfer Center form (available in A8), attach unofficial copies of your college transcripts, and mail them in the addressed envelope to Aarti Mehta of UC Berkeley. After Ms. Mehta receives your records, she will contact you within a week to discuss your questions and concerns. If you would like to speak with her prior to mailing your transcripts, she can be reached at: (562)760-2540 or amehta@berkeley.edu. We look forward to assisting you with your transfer to Cal. Go Bears!! If you cannot meet Ms. ELAC Students attend Berkeley for Summer ELAC students Jesse Gallegos, Karina Hermawan, Sara Martinez, and Tina Zeng all participated in the Summer @ Berkeley Program. They either took a class, did research with Berkeley professors, or participated in a combination of both. Here are some of their comments regarding their experience. Karina Hermawan – “ I am learning so much about research, the city of Berkeley, the people of Berkeley, as well as the people from all over the world who are staying at the Berkeley International House. Every breakfast, lunch, dinner is a new crowd, a new adventure; people sit talk, vent, and converse about their backgrounds, their lives, their projects, and their experiences. This Berkeley opportunity has been quite an eye opening and wonderful experience.” Tina Zeng – “Cal is great! I plan my own schedule which is a good thing and can also be a bad thing. Managing my time and setting daily goals have helped me to stay on track and allows me to have fun! My mentor is a great professor here at Berkeley and I love conversing with him about my research topic. The scintillating conversations we have about societal issues that can be drawn from my readings have encouraged me to not only critically analyze my scholarly work, but also to place my work into a larger context. I have discovered a little more about me and my place in society. Representative Visits A monthly calendar of their visits is available in the Transfer Center A-8.
