Faculty Profile
Dr. Gary O. Gray
Professor of Chemistry
Dr. Gray received his BS in
chemistry from Wayland Baptist
College in 1979, and he
completed his PhD at Texas
Tech University in 1984. From
1984 until 1987, Dr. Gray
conducted postdoctoral research
at the Texas Tech University
Health Sciences Center, and,
upon completion of his
postdoctoral work, Dr. Gray
worked for two years as a
cancer researcher at the
Hershey Medical Center (Penn
State University). After leaving
Penn State University in 1989,
Dr. Gray served eighteen years
From the "Herb-arium"
Dr. Herb Grover, Dean
School of Mathematics and Sciences
One of Dr. Vaughn Ross's accomplishments while
Dean of the School of Math and Sciences was the
establishment of a bachelors degree program and
Wayland campus associated with the Kenya
Baptist Theological College (KBTC) in Limuru,
Kenya. This followed almost 20 years of mission
work in Kenya for Dr. Ross and wife Johnene prior
to his joining the Wayland faculty in 1996. His love for the people of Africa,
the natural environment of the region, and the Ross's commitment to the
mission of Wayland to be a light to the world has now led to the initiation of
a summer travel studies program in Kenya planned for the summer of
2012.
Led by Dr. Herb Grover and Dr. Andrew Kasner, students will be able to
take course work through this program in general ecology, vertebrate
natural history, and/or environmental science while experiencing the natural
environment and culture of east Africa.

Welch Grant for Chemistry Research
Extended through 2012-2013
Our Welch Departmental Grant was given an automatic extension
through 2012-2013. This means that our undergraduate program for
Chemistry research will be supported by another $25,000 for the 20122013 academic year.
Supervised by Dr. Gary Gray and Dr. Adam Reinhart, we had four
students working over the past summer, including Trevor Burrow, Libby
Saultz, Jenna Wilson and Stephanie Whitaker. Each of the students were
selected by competitive application. They worked for 8-weeks (June &
July) each receiving a $3,000 fellowship, free room and board, and 3hours free tuition (Undergrad research course credit). Also, Dr. Gray's
research team is scheduled to give a research seminar presentation on
their work at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30 in the Moody Science
Auditorium (MSB 110).

Graduates Urged to Walk Forward in
Faith
During the Spring Graduation in May 2011, one of our graduates, Mr.
Garrett Breazeale was selected as the student speaker. The following
article appear in the Plainview Daily Herald on May 8, 2011
.
Garrett Breazeale summed up perfectly the typical feelings of the soonto-be college graduate.
"We are teetering on a thin line between college and the real world. How
much I have looked forward to this day, but now that I'm here, I want to
run backwards," he said, addressing his fellow graduates at the spring
commencement ceremony at Wayland Baptist University.
Breazeale said while the safety and comfort of the Wayland family was
hard to leave, he graduated Saturday knowing he had the tools and
friends to be confident about the future, whatever it holds.
"We can walk forward in faith, trusting that there's a plan for our lives
built by the creator himself," said Breazeale, a senior molecular biology
major from Gladewater. "We are a generation capable of great things,
especially with God behind us."
Brezeale urged his fellow graduates to stay in touch with friends,
professors and others at Wayland that have created a firm foundation for
life and to cherish the memories of their time at WBU.

Second Annual Spring Research Day
On April 15, 2011, the School of Mathematics and Sciences held its
second annual Spring Research, inviting students from various disciplines
to present the undergraduate research projects and class groups
projects. Students from math, biology, chemistry and geology shared
their findings in posters and talks presented to their fellow students and
their professors.
Jarrett Ross and Libby Saultz were awarded the Outstanding Talk prize
for their presentation, "Development of a western blot assay of caspase3 to indicate apoptosis in 4T1 breast cancer cells". Additionally, Christa
Day, Patrick Hernandez, and Stephanie Whitaker won the prize for
Outstanding poster entitled "Isolation and characterization of mushroom
tyrosinase from various anatomical regions of Agaricus
bisporus". Desiree Luevano and Rosemary Ribera were each awarded
the Golden Dippy Award for Student's Choice.
