MY OLD LADY
BIG EYES
Twas the month before Christmas and along Belmont Street
Something was brewing, a big festive treat.
People were excited all across Aberdeen,
Wondering what movies the Filmhouse would screen.
We have dozens of films full of festive cheer,
Christmas classics are perfect for this time of year.
December’s the time to forget trouble and strife
On Christmas Eve remember It’s A Wonderful Life.
They also had Muppets and The Wizard Of Oz,
They sure put a smile on old Santa Claus.
White Christmas makes us just think of snow,
But Frozen will have us all singing Let It Go!
For those Scrooges out there, for your viewing pleasure
St. Vincent, Grandmaster and Leviathan for good measure.
People who like to be scared should come take a look,
At John Carpenter’s The Thing and The Babadook.
On Boxing Day put down the eggnog and mince pies
Come pay us a visit and see Tim Burton’s Big Eyes.
At Christmas, families can drive themselves batty
Avoid this by watching the films of Jacques Tati.
I’m sure you’ll agree that there are many reasons,
To visit the Belmont during this festive season.
So all that’s left to say, and to end this poem right,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”.

Maggie (Melissa McCarthy), a single mother, moves into
a new home in Brooklyn with her 12-year old son, Oliver
(Jaeden Lieberher). Forced to work long hours, she has
no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of their new
neighbour, Vincent (Bill Murray), a retired curmudgeon
with a penchant for alcohol and gambling. Soon Oliver
is on the receiving end of an uproarious and somewhat
inappropriate education, and an improbable friendship is
blossoming between the two.
Tommy Lee Jones’ second film as director (his first was
underrated gem The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada)
is an original and intelligent take on the Western genre.
When three women living on the edge of the American
frontier are driven to the brink of sanity, the task of
saving them from their surroundings falls to the pious,
independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank).
She is to transport the women by covered wagon to Iowa,
where a minister and his wife have offered to take them in.
Cuddy soon realises just how daunting the journey will be,
and employs a feisty low-life drifter, George Biggs (Tommy
Lee Jones), to join her. The unlikely pair and the three
women head east, across harsh territory marked by stark
beauty, psychological peril and constant threat.

Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia is
at her wits’ end. She struggles to discipline her 6-year-old
son, Samuel, who’s been dreaming there is a monster in
the house coming to kill them both. When a disturbing
storybook called The Babadook mysteriously appears in
their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the
creature he has been dreaming about. His hallucinations
begin to spiral out of control, becoming more violent and
unpredictable until his mother is forced to medicate him. But
when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence, it
slowly dawns on her that Samuel’s warnings could be real.
“One of the strongest, most effective horror films of recent
years.” - Empire
In January 2013, filmmaker Laura Poitras was in the process
of constructing a film about abuses of national security in
post-9/11 America when she started receiving encrypted
e-mails from someone identifying himself as ‘citizen four’,
saying he wanted to blow the whistle on the massive
covert surveillance programs run by the NSA and other
intelligence agencies. In June 2013, she and reporter
Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong Kong for the first of many
meetings with the man who turned out to be Edward
Snowden. She took her camera with her. The film that
resulted from this series of tense encounters is absolutely
unique in the history of cinema: a 100% real-life thriller
unfolding minute by minute before our eyes.

The boldest of contemporary Russian filmmakers, Andrey
Zvyagintsev (The Return, Elena) electrified the Cannes
Competition earlier this year with Leviathan. Winner of the
festival’s award for best screenplay, it is a thriller, a black
social comedy and an astoundingly direct assault on the
state of his native land.
In a small seaside town, weather-beaten patriarch Kolya
lives with his teenage son and second wife. Their idyllic
homestead harbours deep-rooted familial resentments that
are aggravated by the aggressions of the local mayor, a
drunken, corrupt bureaucrat set on grabbing their land for
himself. When Kolya calls in his lawyer friend from Moscow,
this defensive tactic triggers a series of dramatic events.

The great Australian actor David Gulpilil (Walkabout,
Ten Canoes) won the Best Actor prize at Cannes’ Un
Certain Regard for his majestic performance in this semiautobiographical drama, about an aged Aborigine who
journeys into the Outback to live in the traditional ways of
his ancestors.
Charlie (Gulpilil) lives in a remote Aboriginal community
in northern Australia, where government intervention in
the culture’s traditional way of life has left many of the
residents, Charlie included, feeling powerless to control
their destinies. When his gun and hand-crafted spear are
confiscated, leaving him nothing to hunt with, Charlie
defiantly heads into the bush to live the old way. Battling
both the elements and his own ageing body, Charlie is
eventually forced back to the community and, later, to the
provincial capital of Darwin. What he finds there proves to
be just the beginning of a long road back home.

When Norwegian scientist and ethnographer Thor
Heyerdahl developed the now widely accepted theory that
the peoples of Polynesia first migrated from South America
and not, as previously believed, from Asia, the international
scientific community openly mocked him. Refusing to be
deterred in his quest to prove his hypothesis – not even
by the notable fact that he could not swim – he embarked
on one of history’s most celebrated scientific adventures.
In 1947, Heyerdahl built a raft of balsa wood and travelled
across the open seas from Peru to the Tuamotu Islands,
thereby demonstrating the plausibility of his theory – and
changing the history books forever.
Directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg’s masterful
account of Heyerdahl’s staggeringly brave journey is
unerringly faithful to the original story, as we follow
Heyerdahl gathering financing for the trip before setting off
on an epic 101 day-long journey across 8,000 kilometres, all
while the world was watching.

Cast: Lucie Aron, Anna Brüggemann, Michael Kamp, Moritz Knapp.
Maria (Lea van Acken in a stunning performance) is 14,
preparing for her Confirmation in the (fictional) Priestly
Society of St Paul. The film’s title is literal, if ironic: the
narrative is divided into fourteen chapters, each named
after one of the traditional stages in depictions of Christ’s
martyrdom. With each chapter, the atmosphere of
oppression thickens, as Maria tamps down her emerging
sexuality while suffering under the yoke of her tyrannical
mother. Rigorous, subversive and profoundly moving, this
harrowing yet beautiful look at Christian fanaticism is a
work of considerable power.

Coming-of-age films are rarely as enjoyable, or as
mischievous, as this. Adapted from his one-man stage
show, Guillaume Gallienne shows what it’s like to grow up
as a boy when everyone is convinced that you’re really a
girl – or should have been. Playing both himself and his
frosty grande dame mother, Gallienne traces his life from
childhood in an aristocratic family through adventures in
Spain, ill-fated stints at boarding school and a hair-raising
spa visit to the present, when he comes out as… well,
simply as his own uncategorisable self.

China, 1936. It’s the eve of the Japanese invasion and
China is in turmoil, with the country’s south teetering on
the brink of partition from the north. The paths of two
kung fu masters, Ip Man (Tony Leung) and Gong Er (Zhang
Ziyi), cross at a gathering at legendary brothel the Golden
Pavilion, where a retirement ceremony for Gong Er’s father
is to be held.
Filmed in a range of stunning locations, The Grandmaster
features virtuoso performances by some of the greatest
stars of contemporary Asian cinema, and stunning fight
choreography by the renowned Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix,
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
Mathias Gold (Kevin Kline) is a down-on-his-luck New
Yorker who inherits a Parisian apartment from his estranged
father. But when he arrives in France intending to sell his
newly-acquired property, he’s shocked to discover a live-in
tenant who is not prepared to budge – feisty Englishwoman
Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith), who has lived in the
apartment with her daughter Chloé (Kristin Scott Thomas)
for many years. With no place to go, Mathias strikes a
tentative lodging arrangement with Mathilde, instantly
clashing with suspicious Chloé over his private dealings
with a rapacious property developer. An uneasy détente
gradually settles in as the quarrelling Mathias and Chloé
come to discover common ground.
Filmed on location in a ravishing Paris of quiet back
streets, and with wonderful performances from its superb
ensemble cast, My Old Lady is a touching romantic drama
about past secrets coming home to roost.

This graceful and haunting drama explores the life of Anna,

her only living relative for the first time. Aunt Wanda, a
hard-drinking Communist Party judge who has lost any
vestiges of faith, informs Anna of her Jewish heritage; her

graves, and dark secrets are unearthed.
Underlining every frame of The Thing is an anticipating
dread: the characters – and the viewer – sense the
potential menace of an enemy they cannot see. It’s an eerily
nightmarish and wonderfully enthralling film, featuring
some of the most gruesome special effects you’ll ever see.

Jacques Tati
JOUR DE FETE
MONSIEUR HULOT’S HOLIDAY
Jacques Tati
Celebrating the genius of one of
cinema’s most celebrated comedians
and influential icons, Jacques Tati
(1907-1982) who worked as actor,
writer and director.
Jour de fête
Fri 26 & Sat 27 Dec
Jacques Tati • France 1949 • 1h20m
DCP • French with English subtitles • U
Cast: Jacques Tati, Guy Decomble, Paul Frankeur, Santa Relli.
A joyful, almost silent comedy set in the French
countryside. François (Jacques Tati), a village postman,
does his rounds on his bicycle – the old-fashioned way.
But when a travelling carnival comes to town, its
proprietors show a film extolling the virtues of modern
American mail delivery, and soon the townspeople start
to wonder if François has fallen behind the times...

MON ONCLE
Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday
Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot
Fri 26, Tue 30 & Wed 31 Dec
Jacques Tati • France 1952 • 1h27m
DCP • French with English subtitles • U
Cast: Jacques Tati, Nathalie Pascaud, Michèle Rolla, Valentine Camax.
Taking a vacation at a seaside resort in Brittany, confirmed
bachelor Monsieur Hulot creates unintentional havoc
among the hotel guests with his well-meaning but terribly
clumsy antics. As with all the best slapstick, Tati’s theme
is the cruelty of the physical world. Nothing in Monsieur
Hulot acts quite how it ought to. Every object has a mind
of its own – from the canoe that folds in half while being
rowed, to the foxskin rug that attaches itself to Hulot’s
foot – and each appears to be intent on causing as many
pratfalls, bumps and bruises as possible.
Mon Oncle
My Uncle
Sun 28 to Tue 30 Dec
Jacques Tati • France/Italy 1958 • 1h56m
DCP • French with English subtitles • U
Cast: Jacques Tati, Adrienne Servantie, Jean-Pierre Zola, Lucien
Frégis, Betty Schneider.
In Tati’s second feature film and first film in colour, we
find him contrasting the bohemian provincial home life of
his gangling alter ego Monsieur Hulot with the modern,
contraption-filled concrete and glass home belonging to
Hulot’s sister and her family, the Arpels, where Hulot’s
nephew, Gerard, is drowning in boredom. When Hulot
comes for a visit, the gadgets get the better of him, in a
seamless spectacle of electric switches, slamming doors
and malfunctioning accoutrements. Unforgettably funny,
wonderfully observed and always technically brilliant.

Internationally renowned DV8 Physical Theatre bring their
powerful new production to the National Theatre. DV8
Physical Theatre has produced 18 highly acclaimed dancetheatre works and four films for television, which have
garnered over 50 national and international awards.
Christopher Wheeldon’s full-length ballet based on Lewis
Carroll’s book is an exuberant piece of storytelling featuring
an instantly recognisable cast of characters, among them
a tap-dancing Mad Hatter, a tetchy White Rabbit and a
raucously bad-tempered Queen of Hearts. Wheeldon,
along with composer Joby Talbot and designer Bob
Crowley, have created a genuine family ballet in the spirit of
Carroll’s much-loved children’s classic.
The company’s new production, JOHN, authentically
depicts real-life stories, combining movement and
spoken word to create an intense and moving theatrical
experience.
Lloyd Newson, DV8’s Artistic Director, interviewed more
than 50 men asking them frank questions, initially about
love and sex. One of those men was John. What emerged
was a story that is both extraordinary and touching. Years
of crime, drug use and struggling to survive lead John
on a search in which his life converges with others, in an
unexpected place, unknown by most.
Don’t miss this eagerly anticipated new production,
broadcast live from the National Theatre.
