Self Study
This a recorded self-study activity offered in DVD format to assist with
test preparation for the NEW (5331) Praxis exam for speech-language
pathology through distance learning. This workshop self-study is
offered by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at
the University of South Carolina.
NOTE: This DVD and workshop materials are the intellectual property of
the University and the Department of Communication Sciences and
Disorders and may NOT be duplicated or shared without the written

Learning Outcomes
1. Participants will identify and use testtaking strategies to increase critical
reading skills and improve timing/pacing
of the NEW (5331) Praxis exam.
2. Participants will utilize test-taking
strategies to complete content-specific
questioning based on individual case
studies.
3. Participants will demonstrate understanding
of the NEW (5331) computer-based
Praxis exam format.
4. Participants will demonstrate use of critical
thinking, higher-order thinking skills and
test-taking strategies in practice activities.
A b o u t
t h e
I n s t r u c t o r
Dr. Beth Barnes received her Ph.D. and master’s
degrees from the University of South Carolina and
undergraduate degree from Furman University.
Dr. Barnes currently serves on faculty at the
University of South Carolina and previously at
N. C. State University. She has specific experience
in rehabilitation following stroke and TBI,
developmental disabilities and in public school
populations. Dr. Beth Barnes has publications in
the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing
Research, American Journal on Mental
Retardation, and the Journal of Medical SpeechLanguage Pathology. She has conducted
presentations at state, national and international
conferences.

Test Prep and Pre-Professional Education
This workshop was designed as a test preparation
resource for individuals who have not yet passed
the Praxis or obtained the ASHA CCC. Therefore,
this workshop is NOT offered as an ASHA
continuing education event.
