English 303
Spring 2015
Objective:
The course is intended for students to use English at an advanced level. Students
expand their knowledge of vocabulary and advanced language use. Students at this
level revise grammar encountered at lower levels and acquire more sophisticated
grammar structures. Students extend their knowledge of literature reading authentic
texts, novels and short stories in the original. Writing at this level involves knowledge
of essay writing and other task-based projects.
Textbooks and materials:
1. Language Leader ADVANCED course book (Pearson/Longman)
2. Animal Farm by George Orwell.
3. Individual reading
Choose between a) short stories (NÁMSNET) or b) one of the following books
(e-books are allowed provided you can bring them to class).
 Lord of the Flies by William Golding (dystopian / allegorical)
 Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (dystopian / adventure)
 The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon (mystery)
 The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (epic fantasy)
4. Film for oral exam
5. A plastic folder is required for your work (portfolio).
6. It is important to have access to a dictionary at home or online.
Assignments and grading:
 Three unit quizzes from Language Leader. Two required (2x5%)
 Animal Farm – workbook and exam
(4%+8%)
 Individual reading – workbook and exam/essay
(4%+8%)
 Oral exam on film
(3%+7%)
 Short projects (dictionary skills, translations, essay writing)
 Portfolio: worksheets, classwork and other assignments
 Final exam

You can be free from final exam provided:
o your term grade is 8.0 (7.5+)
o average grades on quizzes are no lower than 7.0
o class attendance is not under 90%
o class activity grade (Portfolio) is not less than 7.5

 Absence from exams should be notified at the office on the day of the exam, otherwise
