WELCOME
to
Dear Parents,
Welcome to NSU and our beautiful 300acre campus. We consider it an honor that
you would entrust the education of your
student to us. Moreover, we look forward
to creating a firm and lasting relationship
with you as well.
Nova Southeastern
University
Nova Southeastern University is
celebrating 50 years of educational
excellence this year. As the 9th largest
private university in the United States with
over 25,000 students, your student will
benefit from NSU’s ‘big school resources’
and ‘small school intimacy’. The ability
to continue with personal ‘one on one’
relationships has been a key factor in
NSU’s rapid growth.
But YOU have provided us with NSU’s
most valuable resource, our students!
Mrs. Williams and I have put three children
through college. We know the feeling
of being ‘college parents’ and how a
university can seem like a very big place
to navigate when one is trying to help
their child. Therefore, I want to personally
provide my email (bradwill@nova.edu) and
my direct phone number, (954) 262-7282.
If I may be of any service, please do not
hesitate to contact me directly.
In the meantime I know that this handbook
will provide you with information that you
find helpful and timely. Please let us know
if we can be of further assistance to you or
your student while at NSU.
GO Sharks!

NSU History
While Nova University continued
to expand its educational reach,
Southeastern University of the Health
Sciences also was on an expansion
course. Osteopathic physicians committed
to establishing a College of Osteopathic
Medicine in the Southeast created
Southeastern. As a result, Southeastern
College of Osteopathic Medicine, as it was
first known, opened in 1981.
During the ten-year span that followed
(1987–1997), Southeastern added colleges
of Pharmacy, Optometry, Allied Health,
Medical Sciences, and Dental Medicine.
In 1994, Nova University merged with
Southeastern University of Health
Sciences to form Nova Southeastern
University.
So what exactly is NSU? We’re a small,
nurturing, private, undergraduate
college. We’re an exciting, multifaceted
university. We’re young and agile,
Celebrating 50 Years of
Excellence
Nova Southeastern University is
the nation’s ninth largest, not-forprofit, independent university, with
approximately 27,000 students enrolled
in the fall of 2012; a sprawling, 300-acre
Fort Lauderdale-Davie campus; and a
presence in fifteen countries around the
world. Through five decades of explosive
growth, our reputation for academic
excellence and innovation continues to
flourish.

fearless and forward thinking. And we’re
traditional. NSU doesn’t fit easily within a
standardized niche, because neither do
you.
“Through five
decades of
explosive growth,
our reputation
for academic
excellence and
innovation
continues to
flourish.”
In 1964, what was then called Nova
University of Advanced Technology was
chartered as a graduate institution in the
physical and social sciences. Over time,
Nova added programs in law, education,
business, psychology, computer science,
and oceanography, and, in 1972,
introduced its first off-campus course of
study, in education. Soon, Nova became
nationally recognized for its innovative
distance learning programs. Today, fieldbased programs are located throughout
Florida, in 15 states, and at selected
international sites.

Homecoming Week
NSU is a campus rich with
traditional events that make
campus life exciting for your
student. We encourage your

involved by assisting in the
planning of one of the events to
make his or her NSU experience
unforgettable!
November 8–November 15, 2014
Homecoming Week is our annual
weeklong celebration focused on our
great athletic teams. Several annual
events are held including the raft races,
Flight Deck Follies, and the Chancellor’s
Tail Gate.
Anything that Floats Raft Race
Homecoming Week
NSU’s Gold Circle Lake is teeming with
Shark Pride as students take to the water
aboard homemade rafts. This surefire,
crowd-pleasing event is one of the
highlights of Homecoming Week at NSU.
The question is: Can six plastic buckets
duct-taped to plywood really float? See for
yourself… sink or sail, it’s all part of the fun!
Convocation
August 22, 2014
Convocation is an event that celebrates
the start of the new academic year for all
incoming students.
Grand Orientation

August 21–August 23, 2014
Orientation is the perfect way for your
student to get to know their new NSU

will be plenty of time for fun and meeting
fellow classmates too.

Sharkapalooza
August 23–September 5, 2014
August 29, 2014
Held the first two weeks of the Fall term,
NSU’s Week of Welcome (WOW) are
fun-filled and jam packed with daily (and
nightly) events and programs to hype
students up and kick start the academic
year! Sharkapalooza anchors the first
week with a club fair, food and prizes.
Nova Southeastern University
Sharkapalooza is our biggest fall kickoff
event to welcome back our students!
This event includes live performances, a
club fair, and an after party — all of which
are hosted at NSU’s Don Taft University
Center.

Homecoming Week
Student organizations are invited to
paint the sidewalk strip from the Don Taft
University Center to the Parker Building to
show school spirit. Recently, we expanded
to include the sidewalk from the Alvin
Sherman Library to the Parker Building,
due to an increase in the number of
student organizations on campus.

Student Employment Fair
August 27, 2014
During the Week of Welcome events, the
student employment job fair will be held
in the Don Taft University Center. More
than 25 different offices throughout the
university will be hiring for both federal
work-study and student employment
positions. All students are welcome.
CommunityFest
February 7, 2015
NSU’s Community Fest is an annual
festival that celebrates and connects NSU
students, employees and their families
in a carnival-like atmosphere around the
Gold Circle Lake. It’s a student-initiated
NSU tradition that has proven to be one
of the most popular events on campus
each year. Fun-filled activities, music,
entertainment, free food, and giveaways
— along with generous support from local
vendors and the university — all help build
our Shark Pride.

Excellence; Student Centered; Integrity;
Innovation; Opportunity; Scholarship and

faculty and staff are nominated by their
peers and recognized for their excellence
and their exemplary contribution to the
NSU family.
The Flight Deck
The Flight Deck, located on the first floor
at the north entrance of NSU’s Don Taft
University Center, is a popular place on
campus where students can meet, greet,
and grab a drink. The name, “Flight Deck”
originates from the fact that the land, now
occupied by NSU, was previously the site
of a Navy air base during World War II. The
name is also especially fitting since NSU
falls directly under the flight path for the
Fort Lauderdale International Airport.
SEA Thursday
Every other Thursday
Filling the spine of the Don Taft University
Center, SEA Thursday is a bi-weekly
event hosted by the Student Events
and Activities Board where different
organizations host an activity where they
can enjoy free food, drinks, information
and fun.

Benefits of
Involvement
Studies prove that students who
are involved and engaged on
their college campus are more
likely to persist and succeed
throughout their undergraduate
career. Your student has
abundant opportunities to make
connections within the NSU
campus and community. These
experiences will connect your
student to NSU and allow them
to discover their passions and
strengths that will ultimately
benefit their career path.
NSU has over 100+ organizations that
your student can join. There is something
for everyone and if your student would
like to create their own organization they
absolutely can!
Your student can contact the Office of
Student Activities and/or Office of Student
Leadership and Civic Engagement to learn
more about involvement opportunities and
leadership development.

Henderson Student Counseling Center
College is an exciting, transformative
time…but along with these changes often
come a variety of challenges and concerns
that are new to many students. Stress,
anxiety, and a range of other emotions
are normal reactions to the demanding
programs and college life. Sometimes,
these emotions become difficult to deal
with alone, and it is often helpful to talk to
someone or to reach out and ask for help.
Student counseling provides the
opportunity for students to benefit
from working on personal issues with
experienced professionals.
26
The counseling relationship is objective,
non-judgmental, and understanding. Most
importantly, the counseling relationship
is strictly confidential. Nova Southeastern
University students are afforded the
opportunity to express their emotions in
an uninhibited environment.
The counseling center is staffed by
licensed mental health professionals, a
licensed psychologist and a psychiatrist.
The recreational complex is available for
use seven days per week for more than
100 hours of recreational fun and fitness!

(OSFA)
Going to college can be
both exciting and financially
challenging. The OSFA is
dedicated to helping you and
your student make smart
financial choices while they are
in college. Becoming familiar
with the OSFA Web site will help
you to learn about eligibility;
timelines and processes in
applying for financial aid;
and the various grant, loan,
employment, scholarship, and
veteran benefits programs
available.
Although, we encourage your student
to take ownership of their financial aid
account, there may be times when you
may want to discuss your student’s
account. However, in accordance with the
Family Education Rights and Privacy Act
www.universityparent.com/nsu
(FERPA), the university is not permitted to
release any confidential information to you
in person or over the phone without your
student’s written consent.
In order to provide that information to you,
we encourage your student to complete
an Authorization for Release of Information
form. This allows your student to grant you
access to academic, financial aid, student
account, disability related, and disciplinary
related information. It is available on the
registrar’s Web site at:
www.nova.edu/registrar/forms/release_
of_information.pdf
Visit the OSFA page, where you will also
find resources for financial aid forms,
newsletters with updated announcements,
budgeting tips, debt management
information, a net price calculator, and
so much more. Please bookmark this

Commencement
Your student is embarking on
the next phase of their transition
to adulthood. While there are
many similarities to their earliest
educational experiences, there
are also many differences.
Colleges expect students to
be independent and make
responsible decisions in order to
be successful.
We have created the Parent and Family
Alliance to help keep you connected
to NSU and informed on the many
opportunities available to your student.
Your guidance and coaching is important
in helping your student maximize their
college experience.
Please visit our webpage for more
information. You can also sign up for the

a hurricane, an alternate informational website will become available
at blackout.nova.edu. In case of an emergency please log on to

Q
What is FERPA? And can I call offices on behalf of my
student?
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. §
1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of
student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive

What can I expect when my student is involved?
Expect a change in the communication pattern you currently have with
your student. Don’t be too concerned if your student does not pick up
the phone on the first ring after you leave orientation. There is a lot to do
on campus, especially during the first few weeks. They will call you back
and they will let you know what is going on. Be your student’s biggest
cheerleader. They are going to need your support, remember this is a
new environment for them.
