We consider it an honor that you would entrust the education of your student to us. Moreover, we look forward to creating a firm and lasting relationship with you as well. Nova Southeastern University Nova Southeastern University is celebrating 50 years of educational excellence this year. As the 9th largest private university in the United States with over 25,000 students, your student will benefit from NSU’s ‘big school resources’ and ‘small school intimacy’. The ability to continue with personal ‘one on one’ relationships has been a key factor in NSU’s rapid growth. But YOU have provided us with NSU’s most valuable resource, our students! Mrs. Williams and I have put three children through college. We know the feeling of being ‘college parents’ and how a university can seem like a very big place to navigate when one is trying to help their child. Therefore, I want to personally provide my email (bradwill@nova.edu) and my direct phone number, (954) 262-7282. If I may be of any service, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. In the meantime I know that this handbook will provide you with information that you find helpful and timely. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance to you or your student while at NSU. GO Sharks! Dr. Brad Williams Vice-President of Student Affairs Dean of the College of Undergraduate Studies 6 Nova Southeastern University www.universityparent.com/nsu 7 NSU History While Nova University continued to expand its educational reach, Southeastern University of the Health Sciences also was on an expansion course. Osteopathic physicians committed to establishing a College of Osteopathic Medicine in the Southeast created Southeastern. As a result, Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine, as it was first known, opened in 1981. During the ten-year span that followed (1987–1997), Southeastern added colleges of Pharmacy, Optometry, Allied Health, Medical Sciences, and Dental Medicine. In 1994, Nova University merged with Southeastern University of Health Sciences to form Nova Southeastern University. So what exactly is NSU? We’re a small, nurturing, private, undergraduate college. We’re an exciting, multifaceted university. We’re young and agile, Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence Nova Southeastern University is the nation’s ninth largest, not-forprofit, independent university, with approximately 27,000 students enrolled in the fall of 2012; a sprawling, 300-acre Fort Lauderdale-Davie campus; and a presence in fifteen countries around the world. Through five decades of explosive growth, our reputation for academic excellence and innovation continues to flourish. 8 fearless and forward thinking. And we’re traditional. NSU doesn’t fit easily within a standardized niche, because neither do you. “Through five decades of explosive growth, our reputation for academic excellence and innovation continues to flourish.” In 1964, what was then called Nova University of Advanced Technology was chartered as a graduate institution in the physical and social sciences. Over time, Nova added programs in law, education, business, psychology, computer science, and oceanography, and, in 1972, introduced its first off-campus course of study, in education. Soon, Nova became nationally recognized for its innovative distance learning programs. Today, fieldbased programs are located throughout Florida, in 15 states, and at selected international sites. Nova Southeastern University www.universityparent.com/nsu 9 Water Works Traditions & Events September 5, 2014 Your students will join classmates for one wet and wild evening of music, suds and fun at the Alvin Sherman Library Quad. Homecoming Week NSU is a campus rich with traditional events that make campus life exciting for your student. November 8–November 15, 2014 Homecoming Week is our annual weeklong celebration focused on our great athletic teams. Several annual events are held including the raft races, Flight Deck Follies, and the Chancellor’s Tail Gate. Anything that Floats Raft Race Homecoming Week NSU’s Gold Circle Lake is teeming with Shark Pride as students take to the water aboard homemade rafts. This surefire, crowd-pleasing event is one of the highlights of Homecoming Week at NSU. The question is: Can six plastic buckets duct-taped to plywood really float? See for yourself… sink or sail, it’s all part of the fun! Convocation August 22, 2014 Convocation is an event that celebrates the start of the new academic year for all incoming students. Grand Orientation Block Painting Party August 21–August 23, 2014 Orientation is the perfect way for your student to get to know their new NSU community. These days are filled with academic, leadership, and social activities to familiarize them with the campus. There will be plenty of time for fun and meeting fellow classmates too. 10 Week of Welcome Sharkapalooza August 23–September 5, 2014 August 29, 2014 Held the first two weeks of the Fall term, NSU’s Week of Welcome (WOW) are fun-filled and jam packed with daily (and nightly) events and programs to hype students up and kick start the academic year! Sharkapalooza anchors the first week with a club fair, food and prizes. Nova Southeastern University Sharkapalooza is our biggest fall kickoff event to welcome back our students! This event includes live performances, a club fair, and an after party — all of which are hosted at NSU’s Don Taft University Center. www.universityparent.com/nsu Homecoming Week Student organizations are invited to paint the sidewalk strip from the Don Taft University Center to the Parker Building to show school spirit. Recently, we expanded to include the sidewalk from the Alvin Sherman Library to the Parker Building, due to an increase in the number of student organizations on campus. 11 Student Employment Fair August 27, 2014 During the Week of Welcome events, the student employment job fair will be held in the Don Taft University Center. More than 25 different offices throughout the university will be hiring for both federal work-study and student employment positions. All students are welcome. CommunityFest February 7, 2015 NSU’s Community Fest is an annual festival that celebrates and connects NSU students, employees and their families in a carnival-like atmosphere around the Gold Circle Lake. It’s a student-initiated NSU tradition that has proven to be one of the most popular events on campus each year. Fun-filled activities, music, entertainment, free food, and giveaways — along with generous support from local vendors and the university — all help build our Shark Pride. The Student Life Achievement Awards April 2015 Excellence; Student Centered; Integrity; Innovation; Opportunity; Scholarship and Research; Diversity; Community. Students, faculty and staff are nominated by their peers and recognized for their excellence and their exemplary contribution to the NSU family. The Flight Deck The Flight Deck, located on the first floor at the north entrance of NSU’s Don Taft University Center, is a popular place on campus where students can meet, greet, and grab a drink. The name, “Flight Deck” originates from the fact that the land, now occupied by NSU, was previously the site of a Navy air base during World War II. The name is also especially fitting since NSU falls directly under the flight path for the Fort Lauderdale International Airport. SEA Thursday Every other Thursday Filling the spine of the Don Taft University Center, SEA Thursday is a bi-weekly event hosted by the Student Events and Activities Board where different organizations host an activity where they can enjoy free food, drinks, information and fun. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. A Ask you student to fill out a Release of Information Form located on the site below. This is the only way you will be able to speak to NSU administrators on behalf of your student. www.nova.edu/registrar/forms/release_of_information.pdf 34 Nova Southeastern University www.universityparent.com/nsu 35 Q A 36 What can I expect when my student is involved? Expect a change in the communication pattern you currently have with your student. Don’t be too concerned if your student does not pick up the phone on the first ring after you leave orientation. There is a lot to do on campus, especially during the first few weeks. They will call you back and they will let you know what is going on. Be your student’s biggest cheerleader. They are going to need your support, remember this is a new environment for them.
