Long Distance Mileage Benefit for
Competing Choruses
Are you one of those choruses who feel like Regional Contest
is just too far for your chorus? The Regional Management
Team can provide some help for you.
We recognize this situation and have devised a benefit for
choruses who travel more than 150 miles to get to the
Regional Contest venue. Here's how it will work--Calculate
the miles between your chorus city and the contest venue. If it
is greater than 150 miles one way, we will take the actual
miles and multiply that by $0.50 (50 cents) per mile. That is
the benefit you will receive from the Region to put towards
your travel costs.
Let's do an example. Suppose my home chorus is River
Rhapsody Chorus in Bismarck, North Dakota. We would go
to Google and look at the distance between your chorus home
city (Bismarck) and Rochester, MN (the site of the next
Regional Contest). Google tells me the distance is 513 miles
one way from Bismarck to Rochester; I multiply 513 miles
times $0.50 and get the number $256.50. The roundtrip
payment will be $513.00. That is the amount River Rhapsody
would receive as a Long Distance Benefit from the Region.
How will this occur? Cindy McLane, our Financial
Coordinator will have a list of the competing choruses and
after the contest she will do the calculations shown above and
will send a check out to your chorus.
Try as we might, we cannot move the geographic center of our
region out of the Twin Cities and Rochester area. What we
can do is to try to soften the costs for those of you coming such
a long distance. We want to see every chorus compete and we
are hoping this benefit may help to make this possible.
My email is c.temperante@yahoo.com. Let me know if you
have any questions about this new benefit.

Membership Matters!
From Valerie Salley, Membership Coordinator
Membership: We are 659 members strong! (This number includes 28 Chapter–at-Large members.)
Total chapters: 20
Sadly we said good bye to two chapters this year. Lakes Area Chorus from Forest Lake MN made
the difficult decision to dissolve this past summer. Having chartered in 1965 as the Forest Lakes
Chorus and going on to earn 2 first place regional medals, 1983 & 1987, they will always remain a
part of the foundation and tradition of Region 6. Thanks to all singers that have been a part of this
chorus through the years!
Song of the Prairie Chorus from Marshall, MN dissolved this past October. Having chartered in
2006 they worked hard to establish and share barbershop in their community and we thank them for
their efforts to do their part to Harmonize the World!
Recognitions: Do you have a nominee for the 2nd annual Northern Lights Shining Star Award?
Last year it was an honor to bestow this recognition on our very first Shining Star, Carol Grimmer
from Minnesota Valley Chorus!
The purpose of this award is to acknowledge a Sweet Adeline from within Region 6 who has
dedicated herself to the growth and progress of the Region.
As a reminder - each chartered chapter has the privilege of submitting the name of one candidate
who, in its opinion, best fulfills the established criteria. Check out our website for more info and
criteria. www.regionsix.org
Do you have an Unsung Hero among you? The RMT is announcing a new recognition, the Woman
of Note Award. This is your chance to share with us and the region a member of your chorus that
has stepped up, gone above and beyond or works quietly behind the scenes to champion your chorus!
Each chorus can establish their own criteria and we will recognize your Woman of Note at the next
regional convention in Rochester! Again, look on the website for more info! www.regionsix.org
Anniversaries: Congratulations to the following choruses celebrating significant anniversaries in
2015!
 Alexienne (Alexandria, MN) – 25 years
 Spirit of Harmony (Spirit Lake, IA) – 35 years
 Center Point (Stevens Point, WI) – 40 years
 Minnesota Valley (Mankato, MN) – 40 years
 Fox Valley (Appleton, WI) – 45 years

ARE YOU PLANNING YOUR NEXT GLOBAL OPEN HOUSE
FOR JANUARY 2016?
The following is an excerpt from our International Website:
“With membership always at the forefront, International Headquarters is continuing to support a
global membership drive in January and September each year. We hope you participate in another
motivating Global Open House event this January to support our efforts in raising awareness of our
extraordinary organization. We are excited to bring Sweet Adelines together again in January 2016 in
a combined effort to spread harmony and share the joy of singing by opening your doors to women
across the globe.
If you were one of the many chapters that participated in the previous Global Open House
campaigns, you know, as well as anyone, the opportunity this campaign provides. The combination
of the global theme, cohesive branding, selling propositions, promotional offers and most of all,
YOUR relentless efforts, has resonated with women around the globe. With such an overwhelming
response from the membership and general public, it only made sense to continue these efforts each
year.
This campaign has true potential to broaden awareness around the world, bring Sweet Adelines
together like never before, amplify the unity of the organization, tighten bonds between members, no
matter the distance, and uplift spirits.
The flexible nature of the campaign – along with the assortment of membership/marketing resources
that International provides – makes it easy to be involved. From planning to implementation and
evaluation, all the work is done and ready for you to put into action.”
You can find a list of items found on the International Website which will help you on your way to
plan your next Global House in January 2016.

Star Burst! Quartet
Star Burst! had a great time on stage in Las
Vegas this year and thank all of our Region 6
friends for your love and support. Fox
Valley Chorus did us proud at the Chorus
contest! It was great to have so many from
our region in attendance.
We were happy to see Speed Of Sound win
the Quartet contest and we are excited to
have them as the guest quartet on City Of
Lakes spring show!
We had a fun time trying several restaurants,
spending time at the outdoor pool, seeing a
comedy show and singing at the dueling
piano bar. Our mascot Miles Bowler was a
big hit at the 60th Anniversary SAI Party
Saturday night. He had a fun time flirting with the girls and dancing with Mom Amanda and Grandma Jane
We are busy polishing songs for City Of Lakes and GNU Christmas concerts and learning new songs for
contest next spring.
Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!

Sounds of Superior Chorus
On Halloween day we enjoyed an awesome day of
coaching with Judy Olson and Mary Dick and a
guest director, Cleopatra (aka Jackie Knowles).
Being that it was Halloween, ghosts and goblins
were allowed, witches and vampires were
welcomed but we quickly banished all “energy
vampires”. Working on our competition pieces it is
amazing to watch these two coaches in action,
tweaking the interpretation, bringing out the story
and emotions of the songs. We were also delighted
with a surprise performance by a guest quartet, Hot
Purple! Aptly named with their luscious flowing
purple hair... but singing about the blues?

Our “Fall into Winter” fashion show was a sold out
event. The whole chorus worked very hard to put
together an afternoon filled with music, fashions, a very successful penny auction and refreshments
were served by chorus members. Our chorus has recently been touched by ALS and a portion of our
proceeds from this show were donated to the ALS Society.
We are now busy preparing for Christmas. Our
next event is “Singing for Sharing” a joint
fundraiser with the Gentlemen of Harmony.
Proceeds from this Christmas concert are
donated to two local charities. This year we are
again offering an incentive program “Give Us a
Try”. Women are invited to join us on the risers
at our regular practices and learn three
Christmas songs to perform with us at our
Annual Family Christmas Show. Later in
December we are participating in the Rotary
Carol Sing, ushering in Christmas with other
groups and ensembles.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday
season filled with happiness and harmony!

Spirit of Harmony
Submitted by Judy Weipert
Spirit of Harmony celebrated their 35th anniversary at their
annual show on November 1, 2015, entitled “Why We
Sing.” Here are just a few of the reasons our members
shared:
When I sing all worries cease to exist. It is an automatic
attitude adjustment!
I love to sing. It is the greatest mood lifter for me. I feel
free when I sing.
I sing because it makes my heart happy and music is the
language of love! It's a very personal thing if you take the
time to think of it, and even on a much larger scale, if
everyone in this world could connect from the heart our
world could truly become more at peace!
I sing because nothing lifts me up like being with nearly 30
strong, beautiful, and talented women that truly care about
one another, and share the joy of song!!
It's fun, creative, and challenging! It can be a brain
Charter Member – Eyleen Anderson
workout! It involves continual learning -- new songs, new
harmonies, new choreo, new vocal techniques.....it keeps the brain active! It reduces stress - both
physically and psychologically - and can improve mood. It helps me focus on the present - no time
to think about the past or worry about tomorrow. Singing is a pleasant way to communicate with
others. I love to hear the close harmony when everyone is on pitch.
I have noticed it is impossible for me to feel stressed, worried, or anxious while I am singing. I feel
happy when I sing!
I sing because it can help me express everything I'm feeling at that moment and turn it into something
beautiful.
I've been singing for as long as I can remember. At church, school, with my sisters, and now with
Spirit of Harmony. It's who I am. It keeps my brain in shape and gives me energy. Mostly it gives
me joy!
Music has always been a part of my life since my first solo in church at the age of 4. It is as much a
part of me as breathing. Sweet Adelines allows me to keep singing and learning.
I can stand in the middle of that group of women and the music itself draws from me more than I ever
thought possible. The music itself moves me and lets me be part of moving others.
I sing because I have to. It has been a part of me all my life. Singing is fun, makes me feel good, feel
happy, and gives me confidence. It makes my body move with the song. It is a way to express my
feelings to others, and bring joy to those that hear it. It forms a bond with those I sing with, and
lasting friendships through our love of music. The memories have been priceless.

Minnesota Valley
A 40th Anniversary Celebration
Minnesota Valley celebrated 40 years of harmony on their annual show on November 7th. Five of
our charter members, Carol Grimmer (director and founder), Sue Gray, Mary Lou Kudela, Clara
Eggers and Ronnie Leech were on stage for the celebration. The rest of the chorus had a great time,
too! We had many attendees for the show including other Sweet Adelines from various choruses in
the area. It was great to
have them all join us on
stage at the end of the show
to sing “Harmonize the
World”! Vocality quartet
was the guest
entertainment. An Adeline
Idol contest featuring local
junior and senior high
students was part of the
entertainment.
Minnesota Valley has completed our 40th Anniversary CD and we have them for sale! If you would
like to purchase one or two or more (they would make a great Christmas gift!) or have questions
email Pat at pat4958@hickorytech.net. She’ll take care of you!
But wait, we aren’t done yet! On November 29th we will be joining the Mankato Riverblenders for a
Holiday Harmony concert at Christ the King Church in Mankato at 3:00 PM and at the St. Peter
Catholic Church at 7:30 PM. Then there will be some Christmas sing outs in December. And then
we plan to take a few weeks rest!

RiverCity Harmony News - - - The chorus was busy as little bees this fall: the quilt was finished
for our fund raiser with the drawing held at our annual show.
September brought Diane Lockard and Cheryl Helm for our chapter visit which was
very helpful as we took another ride on the Energy Bus. We had a wonderful time and
we use the positive energy every week. The R.A.V.E day at Spirit Lake we attended
was so informative, educational, and fun that it was hard digest everything, but we
brought back ideas we intend to incorporate in the chorus throughout the year.
We had several sing outs in addition to getting ready for our
annual show. Our annual show theme was “God and Country”
and dedicated to our vets, which was the reason for the patriotic
quilt. After
all the work
the gals had
been doing
this fall it
was time for
a break with a potluck supper to discuss what went well
for the show and where we can make improvements.
Now for December we are having open guest month as
we get out the Christmas songs and start scheduling
sing outs for the month.
RiverCity Harmony wishes everyone
a Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year!
Sound Cascade
Submitted by Mary Remmark
In September Sound Cascade had the pleasure of having a regional coaching session with Judy Weipert.
Members were pleased with Judy's upbeat attitude and creative musical ideas.
Six members of Sound Cascade traveled to R.A.V.E. in Spirit Lake, Iowa on September 19th. What a great
learning experience....singing with members of other regional choruses and getting tips from our regional
leaders was well worth the time. A special thank you to the Spirit of Harmony chorus for hosting the R.A.V.E.
and providing such a delicious lunch.
Sound Cascade has been enjoying the company of numerous guests in the last three months. We are hoping that
two to three of these guests will be auditioning for membership in the near future. On October 17th we
performed the first of our two mini-shows at Washington Crossing. An appreciative audience made it a very
delightful experience for the chorus as well as for the audience. Chorus members provided treats and items for a
bake sale after the mini-show. On November 1st, the chorus traveled to Luverne, Minnesota to present our
second mini-show at the Palace Theater. Once again, the audience was very receptive to our
performance. Sound Cascade members are busy preparing for Christmas performances. We also are
contemplating our song preparation for the upcoming competition.
We are wishing all of you a joyful holiday season with time spent with family and friends celebrating the
reason for the season.

Red Cedar Sounds
Submitted by Karen Koepner
The Red Cedar Sounds had a busy summer performing in Eau Claire at the Owen Park Municipal
Band concert on July 8th. Our next summertime performance was in Colfax for the annual Music in
the Park where we shared the stage with the Dunn County Northern Lights men’s chorus. In July we
also ran two successful brat stand weekends, our primary fund raiser. September kept us busy
brushing up on our upcoming show songs and
performing at Bloomer for the veteran’s flag retirement
ceremony and in Menomonie at the Methodist Women’s
Fall Gathering. In October things really got busy as we
prepared for our annual shows on October 24th. We got
up early to “shine” on the Hello Wisconsin, WEAUTV show, at 6:30 am on October 21st . Our shows this
year were reminiscent of the yearly brat stands we have
had each summer. With a title of “Want Kraut with
That?”, we remembered experiences we had selling
brats, while singing our songs at our afternoon and
evening shows. Our guest quartet was The Gay 90’s,
which entertained with their comedy routine. Recently we had a Regional coaching session with
Carol Grimmer and Pat Haertel preparing us for
Competition in May. Upcoming performances for
Christmas will be in Bloomer and Menomonie.

Fox Valley Chorus
Submitted by Vicki Krause
October and the sizzling heat and excitement of Las
Vegas seems so far away already – as we face the cold,
snow and winds of November! The Fox Valley Chorus
was so pleased and proud to represent Region 6 at
International Contest. As the saying goes, “we were
small, but mighty”, and we truly gave it our all on the
contest stage. The “reporter” from the Sweet Adeline
Group on Yahoo called the SING list had this to say
about our uptune, Get Me to the Church on Time – “what
a happy performance of this song - you can tell they
couldn't wait for us to see what they brought us today.
More sound than people.” Many thanks to everyone in
the Northern Lights Region 6 who provided us with such
wonderful support!
Now that Vegas is a fond memory, many chorus members
are still wearing the bracelets given to us by our director,
Heather, reminding us that we are “fearless”, which was
our motto as we prepared for contest. We intend to carry
that attitude all the way through to Regional Competition
in Rochester in May!
The chorus had the opportunity to sing at the Festival of Trees on Saturday, November 7 at the Trout
Museum of Art in Appleton, which helped to get all of us in the Christmas spirit in preparation for
our show, “A Time for Joy”, which will be held on Friday evening, December 4 at the UW-Fox
Valley auditorium in Menasha. We are excited to have as our special guests the Benson Family
Singers, and the Fox Valley Flute Choir. We will be sharing Christmas memories and lots of
wonderful Christmas music. Hope to see some of you there!!
The Chorus held an Open House night on November 3 and were delighted to welcome nine guests
that evening. Guests are invited to sing three songs with us on our Christmas show, and we hope to
entice them to join the chorus after the holidays.
Looking ahead to 2016, our calendar is already filling up with a belated holiday party in January,
coaching sessions with Pete Benson and Tori Postma, and retreat weekend in March with Lynne
Smith and Joan Boutilier.
The Fox Valley Chorus wishes all of Region 6 a wonderful holiday season, and a joyous and
peaceful New Year.
**NOTE – The photo was taken at our performance at the Festival of Trees on November 7.

Education Coordinator

After coaching several choruses this fall, it seems we all are working to increase our membership.
All of us are trying to get younger chorus members. One way to do this is to interest our high school
age women or younger to try out barbershop. Several choruses in the region are organizing YWIH
events. The region has scholarships available to promote an event in your area. A YWIH Event
Scholarship provides up to $500 (not to exceed that amount) to help with the expenses. You need to
fill out the scholarship and provide two letters of recommendation and support from leaders in the
chorus. The scholarship can be found on the regional website. Click on Administration and drop
down to scholarships. Submit your scholarship to the Education Coordinator, Cheryl Helm. I will
then submit your request to the RMT, (Regional Management Team). When I get their approval, I
will then notify the chorus of your approval and the Finance Coordinator, Cindy McLane, will then
send the money the RMT has approved. If you have other questions about hosting a YWIH event,
feel free to visit with Wendy Hamilton, (awendychamilton@hotmail.com), as she is our regional
coordinator.
I am sending a challenge out to all choruses to work to have a YWIH event.
Lake Country Chorus
Submitted by Helen Vulu
Fall has been busy for Lake Country Chorus, headlined by a very
successful Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser. We had a silent auction,
bake sale, craft sale, and meat auction, something to appeal to
everyone. From the profits we made a donation to Granny's
Christmas Closet in Anoka, which provides Christmas gifts,
clothing and other necessities to seniors in need.
In August and September we held five Open House Guests nights,
and have a new member as a result. Our Christmas rehearsals have
attracted new singers as well, we expect several to join..
We will perform our Christmas concert
with North Star Chorus twice, first at
Blaine City Hall on Tuesday, December
1st at 7:00 p.m., and then at Roseville
Lutheran Church at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday,
December 6th. Please join us at one of our
events. Details are on our website and
Facebook page. December is wrapped up
with a return to Blaine to the Senior Center
on December 15th.
We are looking forward to jumping into competition mode. We have something fun planned for 2016!

City of Lakes
December is a month of reflection and looking back on the year. Standing out
for COL is the achievement of reaching a score above 700 (707!) for the first
time in chorus history at Regional contest in May. Our challenge going
forward is now to expect nothing less (or even more) from ourselves, whether
it is a contest, repertoire, Christmas, or new song which might tap into
different skills and vocal techniques.
Our approach during the entire year was not to dwell on our success but “Keep
going”! We continue to pick up new songs at a faster pace and the amount of personal
responsibility that is asked of each member has increased. We’ve had very productive and intense
coaching sessions with world class faculty, chorus sponsored PVIs for each member, training on
visuals and characterization, and lots of section work. Our year culminates in three very special
Holiday Shows, where we collaborate with Great Northern Union Chorus. Although it seems like a
little R&R is deserved afterwards, two new songs will be introduced during our 3 week break.
Contest is a big part of COL chorus life and we are very excited for our journey to Las Vegas 2016.
But let’s not forget what is also important to us as
chorus members and SAs. Next to having fun while
doing what we love (singing harmony), we value
our “City of Lakes family” and being part of
something bigger than ourselves. With all the
planning, preparation, and focus needed to be a
competitive chorus, we try hard to create a
supportive environment and maintain a sense of
community. Sometimes it is not easy for such a
large chorus that draws members from a vast area,
to mingle and create opportunities to bond on an
emotional level.
How effortless though, to experience this connection in song. When we end rehearsals circling up
and singing either ‘Harmonize the World’ or
‘How we sang today’, we get it - we are
touched and grateful for each other.
It is a privilege to be surrounded by talented,
supportive, loving sisters in song and a
wonderful director throughout the year.
Let’s celebrate all our friends in the coming
weeks, who are sharing this special hobby
with us. To the entire region: Have a blessed
holiday season!

Faculty members have driven plenty of highway miles visiting 10 choruses and taken airline flights
to 4 locations in Region 6. The goal of the Visit Program is to provide coaching right in your
hometown and this year we are continuing the education focus on Rule #6 from “The Energy Bus”
book by Jon Gordon. This book is a great tool for building a winning team and every chorus is a
team. Every team who wants to be a champion, will face adversity. Rule #6 is about Energy
Vampires, and we have them on every team. Be sure every chorus member reads the book AND use
this book to assist your team to turn negatives into positives.
Check out the website: www.theenergybus.com/ and you’ll find lots of great posters you can print
