MATH 1500: CALCULUS I Fall 2015 Lectures 1 & 2 Section 1 MWF 2-2:50pm PHY 126 Section 2 MWF 1-1:50pm PHY126 Professor: Dr. Jan Segert Office Location: 309 Math Sciences Bldg. Office Phone: 573-882-6953 Email: segertj@missouri.edu Office Hours: TBA Blackboard Website: https://courses.missouri.edu WebAssign Website: http://webassign.com Departmental Course Website: http://math.missouri.edu/class/analytic-geometry-calculus-i Course Description: Math 1500 is devoted to the study of elementary geometry, functions, limits, continuity, derivatives, antiderivatives, and definite integrals. Prerequisites: Students enrolled in Math 1500 (Calculus I) must satisfy one of the following prerequisite requirements: A grade of C- or higher in MATH 1160 at MU, or at another institution of higher learning. A grade of C- or higher in both Math 1100 and Math 1140 at MU, or at another institution of higher learning. ALEKS assessment taken 9/15/14 and later: score of 76% or higher Note: Scores on the ALEKS Exam expire after 11 months. Students who do not meet the placement requirements WILL BE DROPPED from Math 1500. IF... you have been out of school for a number of years, the last math course you took was several years ago, you had Calculus I before but did poorly and had to drop it, ...THEN you may not possess the background needed to be in Math 1500. To determine your readiness for this course, it is recommended that you take the ALEKS Math Placement Exam. This test is a very good indicator as to whether you should remain enrolled in Calculus I or take Precalculus (Math 1160) as a refresher course. For more information about the ALEKS Exam, and to take the exam, visit: http://mathplacement.missouri.edu Textbook and Online Homework Access: WebAssign Online Homework Access with Electronic Textbook (required) - This course is part of the AutoAccess Program designed to reduce the cost of course materials for students. You will be able to access the digital content for this course (WebAssign homework access with electronic textbook) through Blackboard on the first day of class automatically. Your student account will be charged $45.99 on September 17, 2015 for the cost of the digital course materials if you are still enrolled in the course at that time. There is an optional loose-leaf textbook (Single Variable Calculus, 7th ed., by James Stewart, ISBN 9780840058188) and an optional student solutions manual (ISBN 9780840049490) available for sale at The Mizzou Store. If you purchased a multi-term WebAssign Access Code during a previous semester, please contact Paula Nutting with Cengage at paula.nutting@cengage.com for a refund. Calculators are not allowed (or needed) on any quizzes or exams. Attendance: Attendance is vital to your success in this course. You are expected to attend all scheduled class sessions (lecture and recitation). If you are to miss class for any reason, you are responsible for learning any material covered, obtaining any class notes or materials distributed, and being aware of any announcements given in class. Students who arrive late or leave early will be considered absent. All absences are treated equally, regardless of reason – there are no “excused” or “unexcused” absences. Students with absences in excess of two weeks may be dropped from the class due to poor attendance. Grading: Midterm Exams (3 x 15% each) ............................................................... 45% Final Exam (Comprehensive) ................................................................... 30% WebAssign Online Graded Homework (lowest two dropped) ................. 10% Quizzes (lowest two dropped)................................................................... 15% TOTAL .................................................................................................... 100% If you have a question concerning your course grade, consult your TA. If the question is not answered to your satisfaction, consult the Professor. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given throughout the semester during recitation, and the two lowest quiz scores (including zeros) will be dropped at the end of the semester. Makeup quizzes will not be given, except for University sponsored travel. MU athletes who miss a quiz due to team travel must provide a letter or email from the Total Person Program or University sponsor. Any quizzes missed for this reason must be made up within one week. Exams: This course will have three midterm exams and a comprehensive final. All midterm exams will be held in the evening, 8:00 – 9:00 pm (location to be provided later). See the attached calendar for the dates of the midterm exams and final. Math 1500: Calculus I (Lectures 1 & 2), Fall 2015 – Page 1 Makeup Exams: Makeup exams will only be given to students who have an approved excuse and who have submitted appropriate documentation. In addition, students who know in advance that they will miss an exam must submit a request at least one week in advance to the Professor. Approved excuses include the following: (a) the exam time overlaps with the official meeting time of an MU class in which you are currently enrolled, (b) the exam overlaps with another Mizzou exam which the student is required to take, (c) the exam overlaps with participation in a University sanctioned athletic or academic event, (d) the student has a serious medical condition, or (e ) the student has a death in the immediate family. Students must contact the course Professor to find out what documentation is required and to schedule to take the makeup exam. Makeup exams will be scheduled during the regular lecture time on the Friday after each midterm exam. If a student misses a midterm exam and the scheduled makeup exam for a legitimate reason, then the student will receive on the missed exam the percentage scored on the final. This can only be done once during the semester. Students who anticipate an exam conflict with any University sanctioned activity or University sanctioned travel should contact the course Professor at the beginning of the semester. Students who have a chronic medical condition that may cause them to miss exams without prior warning should contact the course Professor at the beginning of the semester. Students who become ill the day of the exam should immediately seek in-person medical attention for purposes of documenting the illness and their inability to take the exam. Students who are informed of a death in the immediate family the day of the exam should immediately contact the course Professor. Students who miss exams or who arrive more than 30 minutes late due to personal negligence will receive no credit. Makeup exams will not be given to accommodate the following: personal travel, such as vacations, weddings, or graduations; work schedules; court appearances; university events that are not sanctioned athletic or academic events, such as fraternity and sorority events, intramural sports or club activities. Practice Homework: Attached is a list of practice homework assignments for each section covered in this class. In order to be successful, you should complete these assigned problems after each section is covered and ask any questions you might have during recitation or office hours. It is extremely important that you work the practice homework problems before beginning the WebAssign graded homework. Further, there are practice exercises from each section available online in WebAssign. These assignments are labeled as “practice” and are not worth credit. A variety of online tutorials are available as you work the practice exercises online, such as hints and viewing a guided solution after one submission. WebAssign Graded Homework: All graded homework assignments are to be done online using WebAssign. These problems are algorithmically generated and will be similar, but not identical, to the numbered problems in your textbook. You will have THREE attempts to work each problem correctly. Before attempting your graded homework, you are advised to work the practice homework problems from the textbook or online in WebAssign. Do not wait until the last minute to do your graded homework assignment. If a problem occurs that keeps you from submitting your assignment on time, no extensions will be given. It is your responsibility to submit your work on time and make sure it is submitted properly. Your TWO lowest homework scores will be dropped at the end of the semester. These dropped scores are designed to cover situations where you have technical difficulties or any other issue that keeps you from submitting an assignment on time. For technical support for WebAssign, call 1-800-955-8275 or visit http://www.webassign.net/user_support/student/ WebAssign Graded Homework Due Dates: Graded homework assignments will be DUE at 11:59 pm on the due date listed on the calendar, without exception. You should always begin your graded homework well in advance, at least 24 hours before its due date. Opportunities for Extra Help: In addition to your Instructor/TA office hours, please consider the following resources for extra help: Calculus Help Sessions: Free tutoring sessions that provide assistance with homework to all Math 1500 students. Please note: If you are eligible for exam accommodations, you must submit the appropriate online form well in advance in order to ensure that the Disability Center can accommodate your request. Due to the format of our evening exams, we are unable to provide accommodations ourselves, and require all students needing exam accommodations to make advance arrangements with the Disability Center. Academic Integrity: Academic integrity is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university. All members of the academic community must be confident that each person's work has been responsibly and honorably acquired, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an advantage not given to all students is dishonest whether or not the effort is successful. The academic community regards breaches of the academic integrity rules as extremely serious matters. Sanctions for such a breach may include academic sanctions from the instructor, including failing the course for any violation, to disciplinary sanctions ranging from probation to expulsion. When in doubt about plagiarism, paraphrasing, quoting, collaboration, or any other form of cheating, consult the course instructor. Executive Order No. 38: University of Missouri System Executive Order No. 38 lays out principles regarding the sanctity of classroom discussions at the university. The policy is described fully in Section 200.015 of the Collected Rules and Regulations. In this class, students may not make audio or video recordings of course activity, except students permitted to record as an accommodation under Section 240.040 of the Collected Rules. All other students who record and/or distribute audio or video recordings of class activity are subject to discipline in accordance with provisions of Section 200.020 of the Collected Rules and Regulations of the University of Missouri pertaining to student conduct matters. Those students who are permitted to record are not permitted to redistribute audio or video recordings of statements or comments from the course to individuals who are not students in the course without the express permission of the faculty member and of any students who are recorded. Students found to have violated this policy are subject to discipline in accordance with provisions of Section 200.020 of the Collected Rules and Regulations of the University of Missouri pertaining to student conduct matters.
