Every year the standard of performance gets higher and higher and I'm really looking forward to seeing our elite teams performing over 150 routines across all the Cheerleading disciplines, divisions and age groups. Success at this competition earns our athletes the opportunity to represent the UK at both European and World Level as well as giving the chance to showcase their talents to their coaches, families and friends. The growth of Cheerleading at grass roots level continues undiminished and as the base grows, the skills learnt and demonstrated become ever more technically complex. UKCA is proud of its record in educating coaches and teachers which now numbers in excess of 6000. The future of the sport is in good hands! I would like to extend a particular welcome to our teams from around the country who are appearing in this competition for the very first time and also to the loyal clubs, teams and participants who come back every year. National Club, Elite and University Championships 7 UKCA MARCH 2011 How will your team impress the Judges this year? Pom Dance When judging Pom Dance, the Entertainment Value of each routine is very important. How much it appeals to the audience through content, music choice and overall presentation will determine how many points are given. The score sheet is broken down into categories. We have listed some of the elements below, giving you an idea of what the Judges are looking for. So, whilst you’re watching the event this weekend, see if you can spot any of the elements, and have a bit of fun judging the routine for yourself! Cheer Arm Motions Cheer Jumps Choreography Entertainment Value Transitions and Formations Visual Effects Timing and Synchronisation Crowd appeal Sharpness, Precision, Correct Placing Difficulty, Execution, Power, Height Music Interpretation, Visual effects, Originality Overall Appearance, Enthusiasm, Facial Expressions Good flow of routine Cannons, Ripples, Levels, Contagion, Use of Poms Are the team working together Did you like the routine Cheerleading This category is a little harder to judge as it has more compulsory/required elements. There are also rules and regulations that will dictate whether a stunt/tumble is legal and safe. Therefore, we have what is known as a Technical Judge. It is their responsibility to decide whether a move is legal and whether points need to be deducted from the overall score. As with all categories in Cheerleading, Entertainment Value and Overall Appeal are still very important when performing Cheerleading routines. So look out for teams that are really trying to make their routines interesting and enjoyable to watch, as well as incorporating the Stunts, Pyramids and Tumbling skills. Cheers and Chants Cheer Arm Motions Cheer Jumps Safe Stunts\Pyramids Tumbling Dance Transitions and Formations Expression Synchronisation Difficulty Pace, Volume, Clarity, Visual Effects, Use of Props Sharpness, Precision, Correct Placing Difficulty, Execution, Power, Height Mounts, Dismounts Variety of skills, Number of participants involved Energy, Originality, Execution Speed, flow of routine Confidence, Facial Expression Timing, Unity Correct ability level (are the skills too hard for the team?)
