MARCH 2011
Welcome from the president
Welcome to the XIX UKCA National Club, Elite and University Championships
here at the Velodrome, Manchester.
Every year the standard of performance gets higher and higher and I'm really looking
forward to seeing our elite teams performing over 150 routines across all the
Cheerleading disciplines, divisions and age groups.
Success at this competition earns our athletes the opportunity to represent the UK at
both European and World Level as well as giving the chance to showcase their talents
to their coaches, families and friends.
The growth of Cheerleading at grass roots level continues undiminished and as the
base grows, the skills learnt and demonstrated become ever more technically
complex. UKCA is proud of its record in educating coaches and teachers which now
numbers in excess of 6000.
The future of the sport is in good hands! I would like to extend a particular welcome to
our teams from around the country who are appearing in this competition for the very
first time and also to the loyal clubs, teams and participants who come back every
year.
To all of you whether Coach, Cheerleader, Spectator, Supporter, Mum, Dad or
Volunteer, thanks for coming along and I hope you enjoy your day.
Kind regards
Pat Hawkins

Meet the Judges
Find out what our National and International Judges are looking for on page
eight. Why not book on to our Level One Judging Course in April this year?
Merja Kauranen-Finland Has judged several UKCA National Championships. A
highly successful international athlete, she won medals for Finland at IFC & ECC
in Dance. Merja has been judging since 2005 and has clocked up considerable
experience in that time. The highlight apart from our competitions of course! – was
judging at the inaugural ICU Worlds in Orlando.
Bartosz Penkala-Poland Is an International judge and President of the
Cheerleading and Pom Pom Association in his home country of Poland. Bartosz
brings a wealth of experience as an ex-pro Latin & Ballroom dancer. Bartosz
certainly knows what it takes to make it to the top as an International
Judge at the inaugural ICU Worlds in Florida 2009, along with Pat Hawkins!
Hannah Jones-UK found a passion for cheerleading at the age of 10, she now
delivers high quality cheerleading to the High Peak and surrounding areas,
through schools, recreational sessions and championship teams. She is also a
key member of the High Peak Cheerleading development group which
celebrates the achievements of Cheerleading in the area once a year, with a
festival, which attracts over 300 local cheerleaders.
Nadine Ashcroft-UK Began Cheerleading in 1995. She competed at the first
IFC World Championships in Japan as part of Team UK, and captained her
team to UKCA senior national titles in Cheerleading and Dance. Nadine became
one of the first qualified UKCA Coaches, and assisted a junior team to
five European Championships. Nadine has been judging at a Regional and
National level since 2005 and completed International judge training with ECA
in Sweden 2007.
Rebecca Aldridge-UK Was introduced to Cheerleading in 2003 whilst
studying at Newcastle University and went on to become a qualified Coach.
Rebecca then joined a national club team in 2008, going on to represent the
UK in Sweden 2009 at the European Championships. Rebecca is now
involved with the technical elements of Cheerleading and fits International
Judge training in with her busy life as a dentist.
Amanda Holden-UK Is a secondary school science teacher and Head of Rules
and Regulations on the UKCA Technical Committee overseeing Judge
Training within the UK. With a background in dance, Amanda has been
performing for over 30 years, and involved with Cheerleading since 2003.
Amanda is qualified to International Judge Standard (Since 2006) and also
Coaches two community Cheerleading clubs in the North West of England.

How will your team impress
the Judges this year?
Pom Dance
When judging Pom Dance, the Entertainment Value of each routine is very important. How
much it appeals to the audience through content, music choice and overall presentation will
determine how many points are given. The score sheet is broken down into categories. We
have listed some of the elements below, giving you an idea of what the Judges are looking for.
So, whilst you’re watching the event this weekend, see if you can spot any of the elements, and
have a bit of fun judging the routine for yourself!
Cheer Arm Motions
Cheer Jumps
Choreography
Entertainment Value
Transitions and Formations
Visual Effects
Timing and Synchronisation
Crowd appeal
Sharpness, Precision, Correct Placing
Difficulty, Execution, Power, Height
Music Interpretation, Visual effects, Originality
Overall Appearance, Enthusiasm, Facial Expressions
Good flow of routine
Cannons, Ripples, Levels, Contagion, Use of Poms
Are the team working together
Did you like the routine
Cheerleading
This category is a little harder to judge as it has more compulsory/required elements. There are
also rules and regulations that will dictate whether a stunt/tumble is legal and safe. Therefore,
we have what is known as a Technical Judge. It is their responsibility to decide whether a
move is legal and whether points need to be deducted from the overall score.
As with all categories in Cheerleading, Entertainment Value and Overall Appeal are still very
important when performing Cheerleading routines. So look out for teams that are really trying
to make their routines interesting and enjoyable to watch, as well as incorporating the Stunts,
Pyramids and Tumbling skills.
