The AU All-State Workshop is designed to help students
take audition preparation and performance to the next
level. The workshop will include a variety of classes that
target each element of the Alabama all-state audition:
scales, technique, phrasing, and sight-reading. You will
be coached on specifics related to each required etude.
Tips on improving and practicing sight-reading will be
revealed. And, the audition process from the perspective
of both the performer and adjudicator will be discussed.

Fall 2016 auditions for brass, percussion, and woodwind majors
Students who have been accepted to the AU Senior High Honor
Band can audition on February 11.
Students should have applied to the university first (auburn.edu/
admissions) and then to the Department of Music (auburn.edu/
music). These applications must be submitted before auditioning
in February.
Audition requirements for each area and each instrument can
be found at our website (auburn.edu/music). A list of suggested
repertoire can also be found online.

Sara Lynn Baird joins the Music Department
at Auburn University as Professor and Chair.
Previously she served as Stephanie Landry
Barineau Professor in Choral Studies and Interim
Dean for the College of Music and Dramatic Arts
at Louisiana State University. She has conducted
mixed choirs and women's ensembles and the LSU
Select Women's Ensemble under her direction was
selected by audition to perform at the 2002 ACDA
Southern Division Convention. She has also taught
graduate and undergraduate Choral Conducting
and Literature.
Mark DeGoti is the Assistant Professor of Trumpet
at Auburn University. Prior to joining the faculty
at Auburn, Dr. DeGoti taught at Eastern Illinois
University in Charleston, IL for several years. He
received his Doctorate of Music in Brass Pedagogy
at the Indiana University Jacob's School of Music.
In addition, he holds a Master of Music in Trumpet
Performance from Indiana University and prior
to that, he received a Bachelor of Music both in
Trumpet Performance and Music Theory from the
University of Michigan. Dr. DeGoti has maintained
an active performing career while teaching. He
has played with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra,
Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, Peoria
Symphony, and the Auburn Brass Trio.
Marc Shane Dickerson teaches bassoon and
Appreciation of Music as a part- time instructor
at Auburn. He completed a year of post-graduate
studies with classes at both Richmond College and
Guildhall School of Music in London, studying
bassoon pedagogy with Neville Mackinder. While
in London, Mr. Dickerson pursued studies in
Art, Music and Drama on a track towards Fine
Arts Administration. At Auburn University,
he earned the B S and M Ed degrees in Music
Education and bassoon performance, studying
with Laurence Morgan. For 21 years, he was band
director, elementary Music teacher and director
of the Drama group at the Fruitdale School in
Washington County, Alabama.
Karen Garrison is Professor of Flute in the
Department of Music at Auburn University. In
addition to teaching applied flute lessons, she
teaches classes in pedagogy, woodwind skills, and
general music studies. She also serves as the Music
Department's Woodwind Coordinator. As a flutist
Dr. Garrison has performed at numerous national
conferences, including those of the National Flute
Association, Music Teachers National Association,
The College Music Society, and National
Association of College Wind and Percussion
Instructors. Dr. Garrison earned degrees in music
education and performance from the University
of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of South
Carolina, and Florida State University.
Clarinetist David Odom has a thriving career as
soloist, chamber artist, orchestral musician and
educator. He engages audiences both near and far,
having performed on four continents to critical
acclaim. His performances have been featured on
television and radio, including recent broadcasts
on Georgia Public Broadcasting and Public
Broadcasting Atlanta. An artist at the 2015 Festival
Internacional de Música de Campina Grande in
Brazil, his recital was broadcast on TV Itararé (TV
Cultura), Brazilian public television. Other recent
appearances include a solo program in Madrid,
Spain for the ICA ClarinetFest 2015.

Oboe
Ann Knipschild teaches oboe, woodwinds
methods, and Music and Science at Auburn.
She received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree
from the State University of New York at Stony
Brook and the Master of Music degree from Yale
University, studying oboe with Ronald Roseman.
She holds baccalaureate degrees in both music
and agronomy from the University of MissouriColumbia. Dr. Knipschild is active as a recitalist
and chamber musician and has performed
regularly with the Auburn Wind Trio, Auburn
Wind Quintet, Alabama Chamber Players, and as
Oboist and English Hornist with the Huntsville
Symphony Orchestra, Albany (Ga.) Symphony
Orchestra, Columbus (Ga.) Symphony Orchestra
and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. She has
been featured on concerts throughout the United
States and in Puerto Rico, Greece, Italy, Austria,
England, Scotland, and The Netherlands.

Michael Pendowski is currently the Director of
the Jazz Ensemble and Instructor of Saxophone
at Auburn University. Previously he has taught
at Eastman School of Music, VanderCook
College of Music, Northwestern University,
DePaul University, Harper Community College,
and Wheaton-Warrenville High School He is a
graduate of the Eastman School of Music with
a doctorate in Jazz and Contemporary Media,
and Northwestern University with Degrees
in Conducting and Music Education. He has
published dozens of compositions, writing for
the full spectrum of ensembles available in
today's' schools and universities. Pendowski’s jazz
compositions are considered to be at the forefront
of the field and are performed throughout the
United States, Japan and Europe.
Doug Rosener received his Bachelors degree in
Music Education from Penn State University,
his Masters in Percussion Performance from the
University of North Texas, and his Doctorate in
Percussion Performance from the University
of Colorado in Boulder. He has performed with
many professional orchestras including the
Altoona Symphony, the Boulder Philharmonic, the
Sinfonia of Colorado, the Colorado Ballet Company
Orchestra, The Colorado Springs Symphony, and
the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra. While at
North Texas he performed with such artists as
Trilok Gurtu, Airto, and Chad Wackerman. He was
also a member of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle
Corps in 1987, 1988, and 1990.
Dr. Schaffer holds the Bachelor of Music Education
degree from Indiana University, where his
teachers included Philip Farkas and Michael
Hatfield, a Master of Music in horn performance
(Illinois State) and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree
(UNC-Greensboro). He has taught in the public
schools in both Virginia and Illinois. His orchestral
credits include the Peoria Symphony (IL), the
National Opera Company, and resident orchestras
for such festivals as the 1989 Bodensee Festival
in Friedrichshafen, W. Germany, and the Roque
Cordero Festival Orchestra in Normal Illinois. Dr.
Schaffer performs recitals regularly and has been
featured as a soloist at several chamber music
festivals. Originally from the Washington D.C.
area, Dr. Schaffer is now a resident of Auburn, and
performs regularly with the Auburn Brass Quintet
and the La Grange (GA) Symphony.
Matthew Wood is Assistant Professor of Low
Brass at Auburn University. His duties include
maintaining the trombone, euphonium, and
tuba studios as well as conducting the trombone
choir and tuba/euphonium ensemble. A native
of Columbia, Missouri, Dr. Wood received both
a BM (Summa Cum Laude) and MM from the
University of Missouri-Columbia and a DMA
from the University of Texas-Austin. Before
moving to Auburn, Dr. Wood was an active
performer, educator, and clinician in both the
Austin and San Antonio areas. He performed
with San Antonio-based BrassFX and the Austin
City Brass as well as with the Austinbones
trombone quartet. He also performed and
recorded with several pop, rock, and Latin groups
including Drew Smith and His Band.
