UVA School of Architecture Fellowships Carlo Pelliccia Fellowship Purpose and Terms The purpose of the Carlo Pelliccia Study Fellowship in Italy is to provide funds for a student to spend a period of independent study abroad, primarily located in Rome, Italy. Should unusual circumstances warrant, the recipient might not be required to spend the majority of research time in Rome, but could stay in another locale in Italy upon approval by the selection committee. The fellowship has been established in the memory of Carlo Pelliccia, a dedicated teacher and passionate delineator who added substantially to the character and appetites of this School. The Dean of the School of Architecture will chair and appoint a committee composed of one representative of each department in the School of Architecture for selecting a recipient of the Carlo Pelliccia Fellowship. Faculty and students of the School of Architecture are invited to nominate candidates for consideration and to support the nomination with appropriate documentation. Eligibility All graduate students from the School of Architecture and any undergraduate who will have completed their third year of undergraduate studies are eligible. Preference is typically given to graduate students. The student shall have demonstrated a high level of academic attainment, a passion for drawing, shall show promise of professional development, and shall exhibit by her or his past activities and accomplishments a broad range of interests. Number of fellowship positions Up to four Application Requirements Applicants are required to submit materials the following materials for review by the selection committee: • Statement of intent describing the study to be done while in Italy • Identification of type of project to be researched and analyzed in written and graphic form • One letter of recommendation from a School of Architecture faculty member The work developed during the fellowship shall be exhibited and presented in the School of Architecture, by lecture and discussion, to the entire School during the following spring semester. Additionally, the outcome of the fellowship shall be published in an appropriate publication. Selection Criteria Following is a list of qualifications to be considered by the committee for selection*: • Demonstration of a high level of academic achievement and promise of professional development as exhibited by past activities and accomplishments through a broad range of interests • All nominations will be considered in terms of the candidate’s maturity and commitment to professional development *Note: the committee reserves the right to name a fellow based on the high standards set by the fellowship, which may or may not result in the naming of a fellow.
