Welcome
Welcome to the ninth Get up and go
In this changing world, the number of people
aged over 50 is increasing significantly, with
more expected to live well into their 80s.
Keeping fit and healthy is obviously crucial to
enjoying this longevity and Get up and go has
an important role to play in this process.
This latest brochure provides a wealth of information
for everyone in the older age group and highlights
activities and opportunities which will improve the general well-being
of everyone - even the most frail.
It’s great that so many groups have been keen to feature in this edition,
giving a host of new sessions to choose from. Aquafit, computing,
pilates, cycling, dance, walking and crafts are just some of the
activities with increased availability.
This brochure has been distributed widely including Edinburgh Leisure
premises, libraries, doctors’ surgeries, health centres and council
offices. An electronic version is available on
www.edinburgh.gov.uk/getupandgo.
I do hope you take the opportunity to enjoy some of the activities
featured.

A CITY FOR ALL AGES
EDINBURGH’S JOINT PLAN FOR OLDER PEOPLE
A City for All Ages promotes positive attitudes to ageing, encourages older people to plan
ahead for their own health and wellbeing and supports older people in need of care. The actions
identified in Edinburgh’s Joint Plan for Older People are delivered in partnership with the City of
Edinburgh Council, NHS Lothian and the voluntary and commercial sectors. A City for All Ages
continues to encourage the involvement and contribution of older people in planning services. The
Advisory Group of older people meets regularly to support the implementation of the Joint Plan and
the Today and Tomorrow group, which represents older people from the minority ethnic
communities in Edinburgh, was awarded the Active Ageing of Migrant Elders Across Europe
(AAMEE) Good Practice prize in recognition of their work. One hundred and twenty five delegates
attended the ‘All Our Futures’ conference at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange in June 2009. The
conference, supported by the Scottish Government in partnership with the Council, was one of a
series of events held throughout Scotland under the National Forum on Ageing banner.
During 2009/2010 further activities will be linked to some of the key priorities in the Joint Plan
including working in partnership with the Scottish Centre for Intergenerational Practice and the
Centre for the Older Person’s Agenda at Queen Margaret University to promote the ‘Generations
Working Together’ network for Edinburgh. The Council is also working with the Edinburgh
Chamber of Commerce on issues around employment and services for people aged 50+.
A City for All Ages was first launched in 2000 and during the coming year an evaluation of the
strategy will take place with recommendations for the way forward after 2010. Older people will
be involved in the evaluation process.

Mother Teresa is quoted as saying
‘Being alone and unwanted is the World’s biggest disease’
Contact the Elderly is a national charity that aims to soften the loneliness and
isolation experienced by elderly people who live alone with little support
from family or friends and who find it difficult to get out on their own.
One of our elderly guests says:
"Sunshine came into my life when I was invited to join Contact. A very
caring driver comes to take me to the venues the last Sunday of each month. In my mid-eighties,
how grateful I am that there are those that care."
Would YOU like to join us one Sunday afternoon a month to help bring some friendship into
your own and other people’s lives? – It’s fun – A small group goes to one of our volunteer host’s
homes for a couple of hours - a cup of tea and a blether! A car with a volunteer driver will come
and pick you up. Do you live on your own, don’t get out much, do not have many family or
friends visiting, have nothing to do on a Sunday and find it a long lonely day? Then call the
number below and join us on the outings. Do you have a elderly neighbour or a member of your
family who is lonely? Are you a Health Professional who works with the elderly? Go tell them
about us. Or let us know they could come out with us. Contact the number below for details.

GARDEN CRIME Nip it in the bud!
by PC Kevin Lawson, Lothian And Borders Police Crime Prevention Officer
Spring is the time when the bogus workers and gardeners come on the scene. The ones who turn up on
the doorstep unannounced - with good excuses such as ‘just happen to be working the area’ or ‘you
have some loose slates!’ Don’t let any casual caller do any work on your property; be that gardening;
roofing or laying/repairing your drive. Most reputable companies do not operate in this manner. Thank
them for bringing it your attention and inform them that you will have a tradesman you know look at it.
Your garden shed may also become a hot target for criminals.
Many of you take measures to protect your home but don’t give a thought to your lawnmower, hedge
trimmer, power tools and other valuable gardening implements lying out in a rickety old shed with a
broken window and no lock on the door. You may even keep your bicycle there, and with the cost of
gardening equipment nowadays, thieves know that very little effort on their part can reap rich rewards
for their crimes.
Break-ins to garden sheds and thefts from gardens are common throughout the country. In fact, many
criminals consider this type of crime to be low risk/high return as they don’t have to force entry to your
home and the goods they can get there are as valuable as anything in your house.
So don’t let the thieves spoil your favourite pastime.
The good news is that there is a lot you can do to outsmart these garden raiders:
•
The boundary fence or wall at the back of your house should be built in such a way that it is
difficult to climb.
•
Use a good quality close shackle padlock on your shed door and the hasp and door hinges
should be attached using coach bolts rather than screws to prevent simple removal.
•
You should keep valuable items in the house but if they must stay in the shed, chain and lock
them up.
•
Lace a chain through the handles of garden forks, spades, bicycles etc. This will prevent a
thief from being able to remove single items. Remember tools from your shed can be used to
force entry to your house.
•
Security mark your bicycles, lawnmowers, toolboxes and garden furniture, by engraving,
painting or using a security marker pen.
•
Fit an internal wire mesh grille to protect your shed window.
•
Install security lighting to illuminate your garden.
•
Fit a shed alarm. These only cost a few pounds and can be bought on-line or from most DIY retailers.
Remember.
Edinburgh is a safe place to live, work and visit and by following this simple advice your
chances of becoming a victim will be further reduced. Think safe, be safe! If you see a crime
being committed, please call 999 if an emergency and urgent police assistance is required or
0131 311 3131 to report the matter to the police. REMEMBER If you have any information
regarding a crime or criminal activity, you can give this anonymously
by phoning Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

IT’S GOOD TO WALK
Have you
seen an adult
at risk?
Walking is one of the best ways to become
active. It’s also great for meeting other people,
having fun and getting to know your local
environment.
It’s in your hands
•
Please call us if you see or know someone at risk.
Call 0131 200 2324
or out of hours on 0800 731 6969.
www.edinburgh.gov.uk/adultprotection
Looking out for people at risk
The City of Edinburgh Council has launched the
first ever adult protection campaign in Scotland.
They have teamed up with Lothian and Borders
Police and NHS Lothian to raise awareness. The
Council is asking everyone to be more aware of
adults who may be at risk. Concerned
individuals are being encouraged to contact one
of the support agencies involved so that the
person in question can be protected from harm.
Abuse can happen in different ways. It can be
physical or psychological harm, neglect, theft, or
intimidation, or behaviour leading to self harm.
This campaign is asking for anyone who is
worried about someone they know who they
think is at risk of harm to get in touch, even if it
is something they recall from the past.
The Adult Support and Protection (Scotland)
Act 2007 came into force in October 2008. Its
purpose is to provide ways in which support
and protection can be offered to people with
disability and illness where these can affect a
person's capacity to protect themselves.
The health benefits of walking for just 30
minutes a day, five times a week, are:
•
•
•
•
•
Reduced risk of heart disease, certain
cancers and type II diabetes
Enhanced mood and wellbeing
Weight maintenance
Stronger bones, muscles and joints
Improved sleep
Better balance, coordination and
flexibility, thus preventing falls
Walking is one of the easiest forms of physical
activity because it’s free, requires no special
equipment and can be incorporated into your
daily routine.
People can feel nervous walking by themselves
and so the best way to start walking is to join a
health walk group. A health walk is a purposeful
walk which you undertake on a regular basis to
improve your health. There are several health
walking groups in Edinburgh that have local
and safe walks for all abilities, ranging from 10
minutes to two hours. The walks are lead by
friendly volunteers who have been trained as
walk leaders, ensuring you remain safe and
have a good time.
A number of health walking groups are listed in
‘Get Up and go’ but if there isn’t one listed in
your area, or you are interested in setting up a
new group, please contact Rosey Ecob at City of
Edinburgh Council on 0131 469 3612. More
information about health walks, including
resources and training opportunities, can be

more out of life. We enable older people to
do so by delivering practical support through
the power of volunteering. Our 11,500

a wide variety of volunteering opportunities
in WRVS, for both men and women - from
driving isolated older people to

A Call in Time Would you like a weekly friendly phone call?
Call in time is a new FREE service. One of our trained registered volunteers could give you a friendly
phone call once a week on your preferred day and at a time convenient to you. You can have a
friendly chat to talk about anything you want to – from the weather to your favourite subject.
Here is what some of our clients have said about the Call in Time Service:
•
“I wouldn’t be without her, its fabulous; I look forward to the weekly call. It’s absolutely
brilliant when she rings up.”
•
“You can’t put it into words. It’s just knowing that there’s somebody there, especially when you
live on your own. It’s just priceless.”
If you are interested in the service, please call us on 0844 225 1607 (a local call rate)
What better way is there to get involved in your community than getting out
there and making a difference?
Here at Standard Life we encourage our people to make a difference by getting involved in our
community challenges. We have been organising challenges for over 10 years and they have
varied from garden make-overs to room redecoration, and tea dances to reminiscing rooms.
The challenges are planned in conjunction with the host organisation and part of the challenge is
to fundraise for any materials needed for the challenge.
It really is a win/win situation. The teams involved get the team building and development they
need and the host organisation gets a piece of work done at no cost to them.
We are always open to ideas, so if you have something you think Standard Life could help with
as a team challenge please call 0131 245 6189 and we will certainly consider your request.
