She has a portfolio of projects that ranges from exclusive hotels in London to full church conversions. Recently she’s worked on one particular project very close to her heart – a converted church hall that she calls her home. Both of Laura’s recent Signature projects will be featured in 25 Most Beautiful Homes magazine. Laura has managed to craft a beautiful balance between a fairly industrial look and a cosy, warm home. Maintaining many of the original features, she’s also retained the character of this former community space. She talked to Signature about why she decided to undertake the project, the hurdles of converting a property and some of the hidden gems she’s uncovered along the way. Have a project in mind that you’d like our assistance with? Give us a call on 0191 432 4626. What inspired you to renovate the church hall? Were there any hidden gems you uncovered at the hall? I love a challenge! I saw something edgy and unique about the building that really appealed to me. I had previously worked on converting an old Presbyterian church, which was beautiful but because of its age and beauty, it was difficult to incorporate some of the more modern elements that are really fashionable at the moment. With St Augustine’s Church Hall, I knew I would have the freedom to go for a much more industrial and modern look. Oh, plenty! My favourite is probably an old table tennis table I found in the toilets from when the Scouts had been there. We now use it as our dining table! What challenges did you encounter DURING the project? There was nothing that directly affected me but the church had issued a covenant stating that the hall could only be used for a single dwelling or, if used for commercial purposes, it could only be a nursery. How did the local residents react to the conversion? Did you encounter any negativity? There was no negativity whatsoever - everyone has been so receptive and welcoming. The local residents were really happy to see that it was being used as a home. People sometimes pop in to say they used to come to the hall for Scouts or use it when it was a dance hall! Were there features you lost but would have likeD to Have kePt? I think it’s really important when converting a property, that you do keep some of the original features. It gives the building character – a story behind it. We’ve kept a lot of the original window fixtures and fittings – same with a lot of the doors. We’ve also converted part of the old stage into one of the bedrooms. The things we couldn’t keep were mostly for practical reasons. I love exposed brick work and, due to building restrictions, I couldn’t have as much as I would have liked. When you see a lot of exposed brick work in properties they often have a lot of outside insulation or cladding, or they are just plain freezing! 10 What advice would you give to someone who wanted to undertake a similar project? It can be very hard work and not half as glamorous as it looks on the TV. Saying that, if you love it, it never seems like hard work. One key piece of advice I’d give is to make sure you always have a contingency budget. Something will always come up that takes you by surprise, so it’s important to be prepared for that. What are some of the upcoming projects for signature Design and Construction? Some of the work we do isn’t necessarily as glamorous as a full conversion, but it’s just as important. Work like damp-proofing - things that need done and make a big difference to the client. However, we’re currently working on converting a stunning, old 1830’s house in Ponteland. It has a funny series of extensions at the back, which we’re turning into a beautiful open plan kitchen and living area. The other day I went shopping with the client for kitchens, which was great fun. At Signature we do spend a great deal of time with each of our clients and ensure that they get a really bespoke service but on a reasonable budget. Whitley Bay High School achieves outstanding GCSE results. 87% more 5 or A*- C grad es Happy, confident and successful Whitley Bay High School students this summer collected the best results since league tables began. 87% of students achieved a total of 5 or more A*- C grades with 80% achieving 5 or more A*- C grades including English and Maths, the highest of all the schools in North Tyneside. The number of A* grades went up by 4% to 12% and A grades up to 22% meaning that 34% of grades were right at the top end. Two thirds of all grades were A* - B. A huge 90% of a year group of 350 students achieved A*- C in English Language and 87% achieved A*- C in Maths. Science results were equally impressive with 87% achieving at least two A*- C grades. Students arrived at school to collect their results with an air of excitement and anticipation. Alice Bull was delighted with her 10 A*s and 1 A. “I was hoping to do well but I was surprised by some of my grades so I’m really happy. I am going to stay on at Whitley Bay High School Sixth Form to study Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Further Maths and I hope to go to Cambridge University to read Natural Sciences.” The stories of success, hard work and excellent teaching were replicated across the school.
