[The Study of the Religion of Christian Filipinos has fallen prey to the notion that
religion and Church are one. The Christianity of the poorest Strata of Tagalog Society in
Eastern Laguna Province is discovered to have little to do with the Roman Catholic
church as an institution, however. The Samahan thus becomes an arena wherein ideas
about unity and coercion, about the meaning of tradition and religion, and about the
oppression of those Tagalogs who call themselves oppressed are debated, thought about,
and enacted. The grammar whereby assent is given or withheld is analyzed in detail ; the
ideas, expressed through action within the samahan, are interpreted on the assumption
that this is what the religion of these Tagalogs is – the social acts of a single class of
people working together to symbolize their everyday experience.]

[In his book Towards a Political Economy of information, Roberto Verzola takes a well
argued position that the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) and
information highways they are creating will affect us in the same way as the logging road
in the story he tells above. ICTs and the Internet do have a dark side, as Verzola clearly
points out.
Policy-makers, educators, parents as well as students must read this book especially if
they intend to invest huge amounts of money, resources or time in these technologies.
When a phenomenon is one that can completely change our lives and those of our
children and grandchildren, we must look at it from different perspectives. We need, at
the very least, a second opinion. What this book offers is a very well-argued second
opinion that reveals the dark side of ICTs and suggests ways to cope with it.]

1. Philippines – Rural Conditions
$ 18.00
[This book provides snapshots of issues in contemporary Philippine rural society set
against the changes that transpires from the 1920s to the 1990s.
Focusing on microlevel conditions in communities in Antique, Cavite, Dalaguete, Negros
Occidental, Nueva Ecija, South Cotabato, among others, the case studies reveal the
complex interrelation of population movements, economic underdevelopment, state
inefficacy, environmental degradation, and peoples’ Survival strategies.
Concentrating on the poor in denuded and non-irrigated areas with low levels of
agricultural production and fisherfolk facing a depleted fishery resource, the case studies
narrate various means of coping with poverty in a degraded environment. These survival
strategies, however, reflect the limits of household efforts. It is thus imperative to
undertake collective and macrolevel actions beyond the uncoordinated decisions of
individual households to break out of the impoverishing effects of erratic growth cycles
and address the intergenerational character of poverty.]

$ 22.00
[The Philippines and the Marianas share a colorful historic past. With their inhabitants
already sharing similarities even before the coming of West, the link between the two
archipelagos became more pronounced with the arrival of Spanish colonizers. Both are
now named after Spanish royalty, the Philippines after King Philip II and the Marianas
after Queen Maria Ana.
During the period of Spanish colonization, natives of the Philippines were sent to the
Marianas as soldiers, catechists, and servants of the missionaries. Some of them
distinguished themselves in the colonization effort while others died in the cause of
evangelization. Later settlers, craftsmen and exiles were sent to the islands. The sending
of natives of the Philippines to the Marianas was an answer to Spain’s need to sustain its
imperial objectives there. Nevertheless most of the Filipinos readily adapted to their new
home and became part of the island society.
This book attempts to tell the story of the people of the Philippines who went to the
Marianas during the Spanish period and the early American period. Using both primary
and secondary source materials, it hopes to present a picture of the life of those Filipinos
and their legacy in the far islands of the Pacific.]

[This book describes a vibrant Japanese community that was fully engaged in northern
Luzon economic, cultural and civic life in the first decades of the 20th century. Because of
the great toll on Filipino life and society in the second world war, most of the stories here
came to be shared only within small groups of Japanese-Filipinos. Few of their elders, the
pioneers’ children, now remain. Through Oral accounts, archival research, and over 300
previously unpublished line drawings and photographs, this volume retrieves for us a
portion of Baguio and Cordillera history that has come close to being totally forgotten.]

[This book is the third of the series entitled “The Philippines Under Spain,” a compilation
of documents covering the entire Spanish regime in the Philippines from the voyage of
Magellan to the revolution against Spain.
This third book, “All the King’s Men,” contains the “Meritos Y Servicios.” the service
records of the members of the first colonizers, and letters and official reports of an on the
first governors describing the major events and characterists of their incumbency.
Following the theory that a government is only as good-or as bad-as the men who do the
governing and that the character of a people is molded by the characteristics of those who
govern them, a study of these documents that reveal the characters of the first Spaniards
in the Philippines could thus explain the consequent effect on the people and on
subsequent historical events in the Philippines.
However, it is not the intention of the editors to make historical judgments. Rather it is
their chosen role to merely furnish the documents that could possibly lead history
scholars to make plausible deductions and conclusions. But whether they read these
documents in order to support a scholarly thesis or merely for private entertainment, the
readers will be interested not only in the revealing idiosyncrasies of the officials in the
Philippines of four hundred years ago, but will be shocked and probably be depressed by
the similarity between then and now. The more optimistic point of view. however, is to
believe that by studying the Past, one not only gets to understand the Present but,
hopefully may be able to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the Future.
If they have in some small way contributed towards this end, the editors shall consider
themselves well rewarded for many years of painstaking labor.]

[The essays in this volume show approaches to problems of utilizing literacy texts in
revealing contingent realities about Philippine history. Each point of view or perspective
is open to adventure. Each leads both scholar and critic right into the thickets and prickly
brushes of literary and historical texts. In this way, they are able to identify the pivotal
method and the literary subject they want to explore and resituate in a period of history.

foreword is by Fr. Poli Ty, S.S.S. and introduction by Fr. Albert Alejo, S.J.
She has been writing under several pen names, SERAPHIM, for SunStar, EL MYRA for
Weekender Magazine, I.IRENAEUS for Lamdag and has been using part of her name for
the Philippine Daily Inquirer and the New Star. It is only now that she has finally
decided to reveal herself to her readers. Her incisive, often biting puns laced with wry
and cutting humor that characterize her writing, easily bring her readers to burst of
laughter and merriment. But after the last echo of laughter has faded away, comes the
bitter truths that most of her essays would reveal – on Politics, Economics, Business,
Governance, International Relations and Theology.
The author’s “coming out” so to speak marks a defining moment in Sylvia’s writing
career. She aptly titled this maiden book of hers “Dare to Bare” – both a daring (going
public) and a baring (as in baring her soul)]

[This book brings together for the first time on-the-ground experiences in
participatory governance of the Barangay-Bayan Governance Consortium. There are
ten case studies featured, each with its own unique story and lessons to share. Yet
collectively, they describe how people are changing the way they look at politics and
their role in it. The Case studies provide ample material to explore, expand, and
challenge concepts and discourse on “participation”, “Good Governance”, and
“Empowerment”. Participation in governance takes on new meaning, as ordinary
citizens develop a personal stake in striving for genuine democratic change and
transforming power relations and structures that perpetuate patronage, injustice,
poverty and marginalization.
The book will appeal to readers interested in participatory processes and political
change, including activists and local governance practitioners, policy makers,
development professionals, and researchers.]

[Philippine Civil Society and the globalization Discourse presents the perspectives and
positions of a particular segment of Philippine civil society that addresses and confronts
the challenges of globalization. It examines the phenomenon as viewed by selected
major civil society organizations that have so far been critical or at least wary about
globalization. In ding so, the book provides baseline data for studies on the role played
by civil society in the globalization discourse. It goes a step further by examining
similarities and differences among closely held views and convictions professed by these
selected organizations in order to better understand the globalization phenomenon as well
as contemporary Philippine civil society dynamics.]

[This book tells the story of the Philippine legislature by examining the men and women
who make up that body. It looks at their demographic characteristics (age, gender,
education, profession), their assets and sources of wealth, and also their family lineage.
What we found was troubling, but hardly new : Philippine legislators constitute a select
and exclusive segment of society. They are richer, older, better educated, and better
connected than the rest of us. Those who make the laws for the country are therefore
hardly representative of its citizens.
This book also shows how lawmakers have employed their powers to further enrich
themselves and entrench their families in power. The powers to make laws, to conduct

[From the Introduction : This book is divided into three parts. The first part is a reflection
on the Resurrection of Jesus. It is a far from the technical studies and speculations offered
by biblical and systematic scholars. The chapters try to unravel the power of the Risen
Christ in transforming men and women. There is hope for sinful humanity! The second
part dwells on the Ascension of Jesus. This is symbolically the “interim period” between

the Resurrection and Pentecost. My focus is the process of formation used by the Risen
Lord so that his dispels may be re-convened and prepared for the promised Advocate.
There is hope for community! The third part is about the Holy Spirit sent on Pentecost. It
leads us to an appreciation of the essential role of the Spirit in all of Christian life,
especially in fostering communion and mission. There is hope for mission! An epilogue
on Mary as the icon of hope will close the book. In her we have hope for hope!]

papers by therapist-researchers who go directly to the “almost raw” experience of the
children themselves.
It is also a book the phenomenological-clinical approach and how it is particularly suited

experience of the children. In addition, each researcher narrates the inner journey she

they populated the Mindoro island scattered in the mountains. Various migrations drove
them up and up the hills – and simultaneous with their passive resistance, the land of
mindoro lost its abundant natural resources to poor stewardship by other Filipino settlers

[Rulebook Women recreates for the present generation the images, obligations, and
prospects of the 19th century Filipino women as delineated and dictated by a distinctive
body of literature called books of conduct. Also known as rulebooks, the hybrid literary
colonial period and thus functioned as a formidable tool for “character formation.”
Based on a survey of ten rule books, including Fr. Modesto de Castro’s best-selling
protonovel Urbana at Feliza, the book scrutinizes the way women- were conditioned to
think, act, feel, dream, and love according to the Christian virtues of chastity, moderation,
obedience, silence, subservience, servility, sacrifice, and selflessness.
Yet, despite the prescriptions and proscriptions of Church and civil society, women were
able to transcend their limitations, interestingly, by hewing to their roles and performing
their duties while positioning themselves in spaces that they had redefined, or that had
been defined for them by the exigencies of life in a colony in crisis.]
