Introduction A. What is physical fitness? a. Physical Fitness- the body’s ability to respond or adapt to the demands and stress of physical effort; to perform moderate to vigorous levels of physical activity without becoming overly tired. b. Health-related fitness includes: 1. Cardio respiratory endurance 2. Muscular strength 3. Muscular endurance 4. Flexibility 5. Body composition c. Health-related fitness helps withstand physical challenges and protects from diseases III. Physical Activity and Exercise for Health and Fitness (Sharonrose Jardim) Physical Activity-is any body movement carried out by the skeletal muscles and requiring energy 1. Quick, easy movements need little energy; intense, sustained movements need more energy This group activity template is copyrighted © 2009 http://www.bettycjung.net Page 2 of 7 PCH 201 Wellness, Group Presentation Activity Exercise-refers to a subset of physical activity-planned, structured, repetitive movement of the body intended specifically to improved or maintain physical fitness 2. The Center For Disease Control reported-48% participate in some leisure time physical activity including 50% men and 47% women Between 2001 and 2005, except Hispanic males, physical activity increased for all 3. There is a connection between education and activity levels-the higher the education, the higher the physical activity, and the same for lower levels of education 4. Adults should all spend at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 5 days a week or 20 minutes of vigorous intensity 3 days a week-should be aerobic exercises 5. Exercise can lower the risk of : blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, osteoporosis, and can reduce mild to moderate depression and anxiety This group activity template is copyrighted © 2009 http://www.bettycjung.net Page 3 of 7 PCH 201 Wellness, Group Presentation Activity Group Presentation Topic: Exercise for Health and Fitness Date of Presentation: November 2 Date for Group Presentation Outline submission and Group Meeting with Professor Jung: October 26 Topic C10 Exercise Meeting Date October 26, 2009 Presentation Date November 2, 2009 Section 1 – Group Activity Record Role Group Leader Group Co-Leader Group Member Group Member Group Member Group Member Group Member Student Student Name Student Name Student Name Student Name Student Name Student Name Student Name This group activity template is copyrighted © 2009 http://www.bettycjung.net Page 4 of 7 PCH 201 Wellness, Group Presentation Activity My Official role in the group: My official role in the group was group member. I was responsible for developing my section of the outline and power point and getting it to the group leader and co-leader. My unofficial role in the group: My unofficial role in the group was to gather the group outline into a power point, and to develop the outline for the introduction to the chapter. At first, this duty was of the leader, but I volunteered for this role when our group leader did not live up to her duties. Positive attributes of the group: A very positive attribute of our group was the willingness to do whatever it takes to receive a high grade on the project. We were all willing to take control of our part of the project and even help each other with their parts of the project. We also all seemed understanding of the work and class schedule of others in the group and were able to work around this. When our group leader did not fit the standards we all viewed necessary for the group to succeed we distributed her work amongst ourselves and our co-leader stepped up to the plate as leader. Negative attributes of the group: One of our group members, our group leader, did not contact us or complete her part in the group project, or her role as leader. This was the only flaw I saw in our group; however our group kindly understood and wasted no time in making up for the loss of a member. What I learned about group dynamics: I learned that group projects don’t necessarily mean spending extreme amounts of time meeting to work on a project, it could also mean that we work together but This group activity template is copyrighted © 2009 http://www.bettycjung.net Page 5 of 7 PCH 201 Wellness, Group Presentation Activity separately, which is what our group did in this case. Even though we had to decide on a group leader and group co-leader, we all seemed to lead and help in each of our own area of “expertise”. For instance, when one of us had never used power point before, another stepped in to explain and help. We all were leaders within our group in one little way or another. One thing could have been done better: One thing is that it would have been nice to hear from our original group leader, at least an e-mail saying she would not be able to complete the role as group leader. However, we received no notification as to where she had disappeared to and were therefore left wondering. But again, our group co-leader stepped up, and group project turned out fine in the end. I would work with this group again: I would work with this group again because we had virtually no problems working together. We all did our part, with the exception of our former group-leader, and yet we did not have to meet outside of the classroom. We communicated well through our meetings and e-mail and were to the point on updates of the project during our meetings. New health information and presentation skills I learned as a result of participating in this group activity: I learned new statistics of exercise for health and fitness for all types of Americans. I also learned the different kinds of exercises and their benefits, and the how much and of what kind of exercise the body needs to be healthy. One type is aerobic and another anaerobic exercise, exercises that raise the heartbeat. I also learned when teaching this type of information it is important to grab the most important information to This group activity template is copyrighted © 2009 http://www.bettycjung.net Page 6 of 7 PCH 201 Wellness, Group Presentation Activity show the audience the messages you are trying to get across, because there is so much information it is important to stress the most important aspects of it. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1=awful group, 10=awesome group), I would rate my group a: 9 My Final Thoughts: I’m not asking for another project nor did I really want to do this project, however I would not mind doing another project in this form. This project by itself might have been hard, but within a well working group the project became less stressful and easier to soak in the actual information.
