All students must NOT use communicaon devices in the halls during their scheduled class me. Students are NOT to leave classes in order to use the communicaon devices. 2 N.A.C.I. Attendance Policy At N.A.C.I. we believe that the success of students and the quality of the learning environment is dependent on regular aendance. We also believe that regular aendance and punctuality are posive behaviours that should be fostered in a school system which in turn is carried over to the workplace. Research also shows that there is a direct correlaon between academic success and absenteeism. Under the Manitoba Public Schools Act, a child must aend school regularly unl the age of 18. A student who is not of compulsory school age is required to aend regularly once he/she enrols. In addion, school aendance for all students is condional upon their behaviour. Manitoba Educaon has established a minimum of 110 hours of instrucon for Grade 9 to Grade 12 students to qualify for each credit toward high school graduaon. Excessive absenteeism reduces the amount of me in class and jeopardizes the student’s credits. Responsibility for a0endance Responsibility for aendance rests jointly with the student and his/her parents/guardians. Students are expected to be on me and to aend all classes. Students and parents should make every effort to restrict absences to those that are unavoidable. The school realizes that there are mes due to illness that absences will occur. Quite o9en appointments for doctors and densts are made during the school day. These absences accumulate and place the student at risk. Whenever possible all medical appointments should be made a9er school hours or during school in-service days. (Hair, nails, stereo installaon, sun-tanning, muffler appointments, etc. are considered as skips and must be made outside of the regular school day). Failure to make up skipped me will result in loss of credit. EXCUSED Absences 1. Students are only excused from classes when: 2. parcipang on a school iniated and sanconed trip, 3. permission of absence has been discussed well in advance by parent/ guardian, administraon and teacher 4. aending a funeral for a friend or family member 5. aending a religious holiday UNEXCUSED Absences All other absences will be considered as UNEXCUSED. Skipping Any student who is found "skipping" a class must make up class me missed outside of the school day. Skipping a course are those classes where a parent has not made prior arrangements with the school. A student who is found "skipping" the same course for the second me may automacally lose credit in that course. When a student is absent from school, the school will nofy the home by automated phone dialer. Parents who keep or allow their children to stay home from school are asked to contact the school prior to 8:45 a.m. , informing the school why their son/daughter will be absent for the day. These “phone in” absences are sll considered UNEXCUSED but not as skips. When a student reaches 10 or more absences in a class due to illness or medical reasons, medical documentaon will be required for every absence that follows in order to remain in that course. If parents do not contact the school this absence MAY be considered as a skip. Punctuality Punctuality is an expectaon. 3 lates = 1 unexcused absence. Tardiness can become a problem and students who are not at the classroom door when the second bell rings will be marked late. The warning bell gives students plenty of me to make it to their classes. Students should have all class supplies gathered before the warning bell rings. Family Vacaons Family trips/vacaons during the school year are discouraged due to the risk to academic achievement and disrupon of the learning environment. Formal instrucon and parcipaon in classroom acvies will be missed and undue stress will be placed on the student to complete make up work. If there is a need, however, for a prearranged absence, parents shall nofy the school administraon of the absence at least 2 weeks prior to the trip. It is the student’s responsibility to get caught up on their work when they return or before they leave. Teachers may follow regular classroom procedures as outlined for incomplete assignments. 3 N.A.C.I. Attendance Policy Suspension Absences Where a student is suspended from school, each day of the suspension will be recorded/counted as an excused absence for aendance purposes as long as the student keeps up with the assigned work. I t will be the student and parents responsibility to ensure that the assigned work is completed prior to returning or geNng more work. While the suspension is in effect, the student will not be allowed parcipaon in extra-curricular/school-sponsored acvies. Policy & Procedure for addressing absences: In a regular 5 period semester course, a student can accumulate at most 10 absences (unexcused and excused combined). If they obtain a 10th absence, a grade 9 or 10 student may lose their credit and will connue to audit the course and will have to take this course again. On the 11th absence a grade10, 11 or 12 student will lose the credit and be removed from the course. In a non-semester full year course, the same rules apply however the students are allowed 19 absences and lose credit on the 20th absence. Step by step procedure for dealing with absences: Step 1: When a student accumulates 5 absences in a class, the teacher of the course in queson contact the parents informing them of the number of absences, the course and to briefly review the aendance policy with the parent. Step 4: When 10 absences are reached, a final leer will be sent home indicang that the student has lost the credit. The administraon will meet with the student again at the me of withdrawal and contact parents. *Notes: A combinaon of lates and absences will both be used when determining aendance numbers. An appeal process may be made to the principal by a parent which may result in a student, parent, administraon meeng and possible re-admission into the class. This appeal needs to be filed immediately a9er the student has been removed in order to be considered. The school administraon can exercise discreon in extenuang circumstances with supporng documentaon. Please communicate with the school any absences that are going to be incurred. Students Withdrawn from Classes In some cases students who are withdrawn from classes and have completed an adequate number of the learning outcomes may be able to complete the course during current or next semester in our Self Directed Learning Centre. This gives the student some control over their academic future and gives them addional hope of regaining their credit Step 2: When a student accumulates 7 absences in a course, a leer will be sent home to the parents informing them of the number of absences and for which course. (Keep in mind these are both unexcused and excused combined.) At the same me there will be an administrave referral to have the administraon talk to the student about their aendance concerns. Step 3: When a student accumulates 9 absences in a course, the teacher will not allow the student back into the class and the parents/guardians of this students must meet with school administraon as soon as possible to address the issues, develop a plan to and to discuss step 4. A9er the meeng, the student may be readmied into the class. A final probaonary leer will be given to the student and parents/guardians. 4 B.P.S.D.
