From the Editor It was a pleasure to see many members attending the AGM earlier this month in spite of the cold weather and to see their support for the committee and the club. We didn’t get any photos from the AGM to bring in the newsletter, unfortunately. Putting together this newsletter was a whole new experience with lots of contributions from members – thank you and keep them coming, it makes life a lot easier for the editor. If you have any old documents, stories or photos from the club, you would like to share, please send them to me. I would like to collect material for the forty years from the club’s centenary in 1972 in preparation for the 140 year anniversary next year. About 50 members haven’t paid membership fees for 2011/12 yet. The committee meets once a month and at our meeting in August we discussed: Correspondence - Invitation to participate in drafting submission re QLD Multicultural Policy - Letters from Gambling Community Benefit Fund and Jupiters – all applications so far (kitchen update and new roof) have been unsuccessful - Final claim for insurance refunds of approx $15,000 submitted - Statement from auditors with accounts - Query regarding hotel booking service ‘Trivago’ to advertise on our website Events The July cafe was well attended and we will have to increase our smorrebrod production to ensure that nobody goes away hungry. Licorice and Turkish pepper lollies were great success. For September it was decided to have a Teddy Bear’s birthday party and ask Kupaleja to entertain. With both the Moose Hunt and QLD Multicultural Festival in October, it was decided not to have a function on the second Saturday of the month. Discussion whether two monthly events is too much for both members and committee? Club donated $50 voucher for our bar and kitchen to the Swiss club for their National Day raffle. Website Peter has set up the new website and advised that event photos are still on Aage’s server. Peter will continue work on the website and has a couple of new suggestions up his sleeve. Membership 2 new members came on board in the last period. Reaching the 200 member mark is proving elusive, with several members leaving Queensland or Australia. AGM All committee members had signed up for another year. Nomination also received from Henning Klinke, who will join the committee, when he comes back from overseas travel. We’ll serve gløgg and æbleskiver at the AGM. General Discussion re stickers/caps/t-shirts with the ‘Aussie’ Viking motive. Alan to investigate if Brandi has an electronic version. New tables and lamps, lounges, beer and licorice ordered and we need to find suitable chairs soon to allow the shipment of the container to go ahead. Annual membership fees The annual membership fees were due on 1 July 2011 and you’ll now have received a letter with the details. Please help the club by paying your membership fees as soon as possible. Congratulations! Club Centenary 1972 In connection with the club’s centenary in 1972, a history of the club’s first 100 years was prepared. Has anybody got a copy that I may borrow, asks the editor. Queensland Multicultural Festival 2011 is scheduled for Sunday 16 October 2011 this year and the club has again submitted an application to Brisbane City Council. We’ll keep you updated. Moose Hunt with Swedes Down Under at Belmont 15 October 2011 Kim Tvede is coordinating this event and there will be a Moose Shoot practice shoot on the 3rd Saturday of September at the range. The cost of participation is $18 sign-on as guest of a SSAA member, $10 for 10 clays and shotgun ammunition, $10 for centrefire ammunition, and $5 for .22 ammunition and targets. We have some firearms, with any extra needed costing $10 per hour. The canteen opens around 10am for food. So Kim can organise equipment and coaching, persons interested in participating should contact Kim Tvede (kim.tvede@gmail.com) at least a week before to confirm their attendance. Soccer Denmark plays Norway on 6 September 2011 at 8 pm in the qualifying rounds to the European Championships 2012. Note from Hanne and the kitchen team To all our dear members The kitchen team at Cafe Danmark works well behind the scenes and we strive to make our members proud and happy with our open-faced sandwiches. It’s a big job and we work hard to be ready for 6 pm when the kitchen opens. We know you’re getting hungry, but we just cannot start serving before 6 pm. Come and help us on a Friday afternoon and you’ll soon understand why. Remember we’re all volunteers doing our best for the club. AGM 13 August 2011 The President’s Report 2010/11 by Soren Hoimark Our 2010/11 season was certainly impacted by the weather with the heavy rain resulting in the flooding of Brisbane in January also hitting the club through inundation by sewage water. Fortunately the event was recognized and recorded by Urban Utilities and our insurance cover has proved well worthwhile as we have so far received around $100,000 to cover repairs and damages. We carried out the repairs quickly thanks to a dedicated team and avoided disruption of our Cafe Danmark nights, and even if the club a couple of nights didn’t quite have the usual cosy look, the atmosphere amongst club members and guests remained great as everybody appreciated the situation. During the repair process we also carried out some maintenance and thanks to our very generous members, Ivan and Maria Hansen @ Plaza Tiles, who donated tiles to the club – again – we have improved the look by having modern tiles laid, and to complete the job, the club elected to have a timber floor instead of carpets in the kids’ room. In recognition of the state of our furniture – chairs are worn and tables marked and very heavy to handle, we approached some of the Danish companies with good products in this area, and explained our situation and asked for help. Fritz Hansen responded to our request for a helping hand with an overwhelmingly generous gesture by providing the club with new tables at an absolute symbolic price, and we are very grateful for that unique support. Also Le Klint responded by kindly donating Danish design lamps for the club and the club purchased additional lamps to cover the whole hall. In regard to the chairs, we were not so lucky but have located a sturdy chair in modern design in Denmark, which will complete the makeover of the hall. To restore our lounge area we have purchased 2 @ 3 seater leather sofas and a sofa table also in modern Danish design, and all the items are scheduled to arrive mid/late October, so we can look forward to our new look prior to Christmas. All these purchases are funded partly by some of the insurance funds received for furniture lost during the inundation and partly from the healthy profits we have achieved over the last couple of years, so we are by no means emptying the bank account. One other change during the last months have been change in our webmaster where I would like to thank Aage Christoffersen very much for all his work over 13 years updating and making our website nice and presentable under his own steam. During the past year we have been steadily creeping closer to 200 member families and I encourage all to help make the 2011/12 season the year where we hit the 200 mark – the more we are, the more we can achieve together. TREASURER’S REPORT – THE DANISH ASSOCIATION HEIMDAL INC. 1 JULY 2010 – 30 JUNE 2011 by Lone Schmidt You can probably imagine what my initial thoughts were when the club premises were damaged. How is the club going to survive? We had done the near impossible in the previous financial year by generating a surplus of $23,500 and now we were going to need everything we had to get back on track. Thanks to good insurance and lots of hard work we achieved two significant goals in the past year: firstly, the club got back on its feet quickly and is looking fresh and new and, secondly, with great support from members and guests, we came through with another good result of $20,500. On the income side, bar, cafe and other events remained at last year’s high level and we worked hard to get more revenue from our hall hire activities. Membership rose, although the accounts show a drop in membership fees, but this was due to early payments in June 2010. Our participation in the QLD Multicultural Festival also added nearly $5,000, which demonstrates how important this event is for the club. We were pleased to receive Volunteers Grant 2010 funding of $3,700, and a rate discount of approx $1,200 from Brisbane City Council, but were again unsuccessful in our applications to the QLD Gambling Commission Fund for a new kitchen and removal of the asbestos roof. Work on the building revealed that the roof is deteriorating and needs replacement; this is certainly a project that we’ll need to address in the next couple of years. On the expense side, costs were again contained, the increasing council fees, licence fees, water and electricity costs now make up just over 37% of our fixed costs. Our auditors, Wilson Ross Accountants, have completed their review of the accounts which were published in our August newsletter. PS: At the AGM the treasurer was asked to provide a breakdown of the insurance item in the accounts: Insurance cover $ 4,562 Costs paid in connection with work carried out at club $ 98,011 Insurance refund $ 94,909 3,102 $ 7,664 ====== COMMITTEE 2011/2012 President: Committee Member: Søren Høimark Phone 07 3359 2026 Mobile 0431 881 513 E-mail: soren.hoimark@hotmail.com Kim Tvede Phone: E-mail: kim.tvede@gmail.com Vice President: Committee Member: Alan Przybylak Mobile 0402 691 435 E-mail: aprzybyl@bigpond.net.au Peter Hansen Phone (02) 6680 3574 E-mail: wagner_ph@hotmail.com Treasurer : Committee Member: Lone Schmidt Phone 07 3359 2026 E-mail: hoimark.schmidt@bigpond.com Michael Schmidt Mobile 0418 761 515 E-mail: melcrs@virginbroadband.com .au Committee Member: Committee Member: Henning Klinke Lise Kopittke Mobile: 0429 165 996 E-mail: paulise@tpg.com.au Secretary: Committee Member: Vivian Lindup Mobile 0411 084475 Iben Giessing Lund Mobile: 0434 933 953 E-mail: igk1972@hotmail.com PHOTO COMING SOON E-mail: vivandmikelindup@hotmail.com The Boat criteria, and discovered Queensland Maple. the beauty of by David Clayton Thirty years ago, when I began making new silverware, I wrote of my thoughts and the direction I wanted to follow. The two projects allowed the timber to increase the overall impression of the piece and also to increase the overall size with little increase to the material cost. ‘I believe the best classic design, from a Viking longboat to a Concorde supersonic aircraft, is based on strong clean lines, and these are the qualities I strive for in my work’. I then began to think of a boat shaped form that could include highly stylized handles projecting a Viking Longboat impression, without necessarily a long boat form. Thirty years later I still hold to those guiding influences. Unconsciously I think I was influenced by an image of the Danish Viking Ship Museum’s reconstruction warship ‘Havhingsten’ on page 371 of Thomas Dickson’s book Dansk Design. The camera angle tended to exaggerate the strong curves of the vessel and sail, something I have attempted to do with the handles of my boat shaped dish. During that timeframe I have always been reluctant to put handles on any of my work. This was a reaction to the fact I had rarely seen a handle that improved or was equal to the main body of an object. This changed eighteen months ago when I made a tea set and later a water jug. During the manufacture of these pieces I found a new way of attaching the handle that satisfied my design The body is made from sterling silver with the inside gold plated. The timber handles are Queensland Maple. Study & Stay in Australia? Your door to the best in Australian Education & Training…. Please do not hesitate to contact us: Riborg Andersen riborg@studyinaustralia.com.au Ph: 07-38 52 55 11 ONIONS (thanks to Ulla Uhlott and the internet for an interesting insight into the world of onions) In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was a doctor in the USA who visited many farmers in his area to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and many died. The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked the farmer what he was doing that was different, his wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, and this seemed to keep the family healthy. Now, the writer heard this story from her hairdresser in Arizona. She added that one year many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu. A friend in Oregon contributed her story: One year she contracted pneumonia and needless to say was very ill. She came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion, put it into an empty jar and place the jar next to the sick patient at night. The onion would be black in the morning from the germs. Sure enough that’s exactly what happened. Just like that. The onion was a mess and I began to feel better. Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties. This is the other note. Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don't know what to blame. Maybe it's the onions that are to blame. Onions absorb bacteria and this is the reason why they are so good at preventing us from getting colds and flus. This is also the very reason we shouldn't eat an onion that has been sitting out for some time after it has been cut open. LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS The writer had an opportunity to tour Mullins Food Products, Makers of Mayonnaise.. Mullins is huge and is owned by 11 brothers and sisters in the Mullins family. Questions about food poisoning came up, and I want to share what I learned from Ed, he's one of the brothers. He is also a chemistry expert and is involved in developing sauce formulas.. Keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially-made mayo is completely safe. "It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point where bacteria could not survive. He then talked about the quaintessential BBQ, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick. Ed says that when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the onions, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES. He explained that onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator. It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit. It creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning. Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy, you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down. Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions. Scandinavian Book club We are back and ready to read! Personally I have read some wonderful books over the Northern summer and I am keen to share them with my fellow members. Are they all crime fiction…? Well you will just have to come to the meeting to find out. How many of you have met a published author? Like to know how they got started and what motivates them to write? I would like to extend an invitation to an exciting upcoming event in October. A Conversation with Danish Author Andrea Heiberg Book club meeting in October Further details to follow. Next Book club meeting: Café Danmark Friday 26th August 7.15 pm Mezzanine level Join us for a cuppa and chat. If you have suggestions for our upcoming meetings, be they an idea to discuss, a book to read, a new title, you can email me amandamac5@hotmail.com Are you, as I am passionate about books? Then you know how difficult it is to throw a book away, even if you will never read it again. Also, you may be interested in trying a lot of books out, and keep the ones that are great. It's a great crime to have a book disappear, out of print, for none to read. Avid Book readers should check out BOOK MOOCH website: http://bookmooch.com/ BookMooch is a community for exchanging used books. It lets you give away books you no longer need in exchange for books you really want. How cool is that? BookMooch keeps books in circulation, and finds new readers for them. If you're not interested in getting free books, you can donate your points to charities. How it works: Every time you give someone a book, you earn a point and can get any book you want from anyone else at BookMooch. Once you've read a book, you can keep it forever or put it back into BookMooch for someone else, as you wish. No cost: Free to join this web site: your only cost is mailing your books to others. Points for entering books: you receive a tenthof-a-point for every book you type into our system, and one point each time you give a book away. In order to keep receiving books, you need to give away at least one book for every two you receive. Feedback score: each time you receive a book, you can leave feedback with the sender, just like how eBay does it. If you keep your feedback score up, people are most likely to help you out when you ask for a book. World wide: You can request books from other countries, in other languages. You receive 3 points when you send a book out of your country, to help compensate you for the greater mailing cost, but it only costs the moocher 2 points to get the book. John Buckman, who runs BookMooch, has lived in California, England, France and Germany, and was frustrated by the vast number of books that were printed in just one country and not available in the other countries (for example, many books are published in Britain and never made available in America). Wishlist: you can keep a "book wish list" that will automatically arrive to you when you have the points and/or the book becomes available in our catalogue. Help charities: you can also give your points to charities we work with, such as children's hospitals (so a sick kid can get a free book delivered to their bed), Library fund, and African literacy. See you for Book club… Happy reading…
