The Chilterns
beautiful Buckinghamshire
Area of outstanding natural beauty
Over a third of Buckinghamshire is covered by the Chiltern Hills, a nationally protected area
containing some of the finest countryside in the UK. You can discover beautiful ancient woodlands,
from carpets of bluebells in the spring to the golden colours of autumn, rare chalk streams, rolling
downland and gorgeous panoramic views of the Vale of Aylesbury.
There are miles of public rights of way for all to enjoy, including
footpaths, open access routes, bridal ways and National Trails
such as the ancient Ridgeway, part of the ‘oldest road in Britain’
that follows the chalk escarpment of the Chiltern Hills. Bring
your own bike and cycle through the leafy lanes and slumbering
picturesque villages that criss-cross the hills. Sample the
Chilterns Cycleway, a 170 mile circular route where you can
do as much or as little as you like, with plenty of watering holes
along the way. Enjoy walking and outdoor experiences led
by tour operator Walkfree Breakfree.
Discover the many hidden treasures that lie within the
Chilterns. The ancient landscape has traces still visible today
of many previous settlers and is littered with Bronze Age
barrows, archaeological remains, 18th Century sawpits and
20th Century military trenches. Explore the historic houses
of Hughenden and Cliveden or one of the oldest windmills in
England at Lacey Green. For a fabulous day out, visit The Roald
Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden, enjoy a
cream tea on a Chinnor steam train or try something
daring in the adrenaline forest of Go Ape!.
Experience the rich wildlife in the Chilterns by walking through
the ever-changing flora and fauna of the many nature reserves
such as Bacombe Hill, which is noted for its orchids and
butterflies, or spend some time at the College lake Nature
Reserve. Head to Marlow to enjoy one of the most attractive
stretches of the River Thames, where you can spend a few hours
in tranquillity on the tow path, or do a spot of rowing. For the more
energetic, the Thames Path National Trail also passes through
4
Marlow as it follows England’s greatest river from its
source in the Cotswolds to London.
The Chilterns played an important role in one of the greatest
conservation success stories of the 20th Century; the
reintroduction of the Red Kites, that were driven to extinction
in England at the end of the 19th Century. In the early 1990s,
Red Kites were imported from Spain and released into the
Chilterns and since have slowly been reintroduced into other
areas of the UK. Why not have a picnic overlooking a stunning
viewpoint such as Whiteleaf Cross and watch these majestic
birds soaring over the rolling hills.
Explore the 11 mile network of locks, towpaths and trails
of the 200 year old Grand Union Canal and discover boating
bliss and historical engineering. Bring your boots, bikes
or fishing rods and enjoy these man-made beauties
or visit the Tring Reservoirs, designated a Site
of Special Specific Interest and home
to a wealth of wildlife and water birds.
Midsomer Murders county
Midsomer Murders is one of Buckinghamshire’s greatest
successes. The idyllic settings that enthral viewers around
the world are hidden away in Buckinghamshire’s rural
Vale of Aylesbury and Chiltern Hills, within easy reach of
Pinewood Studios. Perfect for a day out or weekend away,
the Midsomer Murders Trail explores key locations across
Buckinghamshire, featuring several attractions and some
excellent pubs on route. Download the Midsomer Murders
Trail online or book a tour with one of our experienced
operators at www.visitbuckinghamshire.org/inspiration/

The Seven Stars
Dorney Lake
The humble country pub has pride of place
in Buckinghamshire. Strewn across the rolling
countryside are some fabulous quality pubs
you must visit during your stay, either for their
unique character, mouth-watering food and drink,
community spirit or excellent family facilities.
Whether you are stopping for a quick break as you
walk or cycle through the countryside, wanting a
warming evening meal or simply want to sample
the local brew, there are many pubs to choose from.
Awarded overall winner in the 2013 Aylesbury Vale Village Pub
Competition, sponsored by Dayla, The Seven Stars set in the
picturesque village of Dinton, is a traditional British pub with a French
twist. The Old Swan, a 600 year old thatched artisan Bistro and Bar
in Cheddington won Best Food category and The Pilgram in North
Marston was awarded Best Community Pub; and both welcome
walking groups. To find more recommended village pubs go
to www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/pubcomp.
In 2012 the Hand and Flowers became the first pub to have
been awarded two Michelin Stars. Based in the beautiful
Georgian riverside town of Marlow, Tom Kerridge’s menu
combines unpretentious modern British flavours with rustic
French dishes www.thehandandflowers.co.uk.
Why not stay at the Chequers Inn in Wooburn Common?
Renowned for its 2AA rosette restaurant and with individual styled
bedrooms, it is the perfect place to relax whilst in Buckinghamshire.
The Nags Head Inn and Restaurant based in the middle of the
Chilterns at Great Missenden is a beautifully restored 15th Century
coaching inn with a rosette awarded restaurant. For details of how
to book a stay at an inn go to pages 20 and 24.
Buckinghamshire has a unique place in the world of sport.
The first ever event for people with disabilities was held at
Stoke Mandeville in 1948 and marked the Birthplace of the
Paralympic Movement.
Following Buckinghamshire’s incredible role in sporting
history in 2012, this association will be celebrated in 2014
when Stoke Mandeville has the honour of hosting the
first ever element of a Paralympic Torch Relay, when the
Paralympic Heritage Flame is lit at Stoke Mandeville Stadium
on 1 March 2014. This is part of a programme of celebrations
which also includes a spectacular gala performance at the
Aylesbury Waterside Theatre on 2 March.
There is a fantastic variety of international sport on offer
for spectators throughout the county; Rowing and Triathlons
at the Olympic and Paralympic Venue at Dorney Lake; motor
racing at Silverstone, the Home of British Motor-Sport,
International cricket at Wormsley, the most picturesque
cricket ground in England and Premiership Rugby from
London Wasps at High Wycombe.
Why just watch, when you can do it yourself here in
Bucks? Invigorating open-water swimming at Marlow,
driving challenges at Silverstone, water sports at Longridge,
cycle sportives, unique walks, walking tours and fun runs in
the Chiltern Hills plus the best equestrian facilities in
the country are all here in Bucks.

When you are looking for a place to stay you need a rating
system that you can trust.
The AA, together with Quality In Tourism, the assessment body
for Visit England, provide a system of rating accommodation in
order that visitors know what to expect when they arrive. This
means that whenever you are staying in accommodation that
has been rated, you can be sure that each establishment has
been inspected to the same standard. Accommodation that
has been quality assessed is visited annually by trained, impartial
AA or Quality in Tourism assessors. The system uses a simple
one to five star rating.
Simple, practical, no frills
Well presented and well run
Good level of quality and comfort
Excellent standard throughout
Exceptional with a degree of luxury
AA Inspectors’ Choice
In addition to the star rating given for quality,
red stars demonstrate the very best
accommodation in the UK and the Republic
of Ireland, regardless of style.
