RIT/ACMT Summer Abroad Program in The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) campus in Croatia, the American College of Management and Technology (ACMT), offers a wide variety of courses to students across several different majors during it time-shortened summer session. Students will spend five weeks in the stunning city of Dubrovnik and can still expect to make progress toward their degree completion. All courses are taught in English and follow the same exact curriculum as courses offered at the RIT campus in Rochester, New York. When RIT/ACMT offers special five-week courses during the summer quarter in order to provide a unique opportunity for students unable to participate in study abroad programs during the normal academic year. Classes will run from June 11 – July 13, 2012. The program also includes excursions outside of the classroom as well as extracurricular trips around the region. Academics Students have an option of enrolling in up to three classes during the summer program. Courses are designed with both RIT and non-RIT students in mind. Students from across the U.S. and throughout Europe study side-by-side in this unique learning environment. Students take pre-approved courses that may be applied toward their degree while also experiencing the beauty and culture of Croatia. Upon successful completion of the coursework, students eligible for credit will receive an official transcript from Rochester Institute of Technology. The following courses for the Summer Abroad in Croatia program are available: • History of Adriatic Art • Concepts of Environmental Science • Current Topics in Psychology • The Great Thinkers • Photo as a Fine Art I • Special Topics in Public Policy: Environmental Policy All classes are taught in English by both American and European faculty members. The teaching methods promote interaction and active participation between students and faculty. Study abroad students are encouraged to get involved in activities outside of the classroom and to fully immerse themselves in their new environment. Student Experiences and Excursions For more than 10 years ACMT has made its home in Dubrovnik – providing students excellent support throughout their study RITGlobal abroad program. Upon arrival, students will participate in an orientation session that includes an introduction of staff members who will be available for assistance throughout the experience, a tour of the college, and much more! Student mentors assist with arrival, getting settled, and questions on living in Dubrovnik. Our helpful and knowledgeable staff is quick to respond to questions and can direct students to local resources. This study abroad experience will be further enhanced by day trips as well as some overnight excursions. Students have the opportunity to participate in field trips to Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro and nearby islands along the Dalmatian coast. The city of Dubrovnik offers entertainment options that include the cinema, concerts, museums, sightseeing, disco clubs, and local community events. RIT in Croatia Facilities The American College of Management and Technology is located at Don Frana Bulića 6, just steps from the main entrance to Old Town, a historic section of Dubrovnik. The historic ACMT building contains modern classrooms, faculty and staff offices, student lounges, copy center, library, several computers labs, and is equipped with the latest technology including wireless internet access. Housing Students will reside in furnished two or three person hotel rooms in Dubrovnik, which are conveniently located to ACMT and other surrounding sites. Course Descriptions 0505-452: History of Adriatic Art Students will develop an understanding and appreciation of the region´s art and culture as both a unique cultural statement and a reflection of the historical context of European art. Analysis and interpretation of aesthetic principles will be applied to the full range of artistic expression, including painting, sculpture and architecture. Credit 4 1006-202 Concepts of Environmental Science This course introduces the interdisciplinary nature of environmental science through the study of topics like ecosystems and biodiversity, land cover change, energy, pollution, and global climate change. A unifying theme is the concept of sustainability. This is part of the required course sequence for all students in the environmental science degree program. Class 3, Lab 3, Credit 4 0514-526: Current Topics in Psychology: Culture and Identity This course presents different topics in psychology, focusing on current research areas. It is taught in a seminar format, and uses original articles and classroom discussion to cover material related to the topic. The topics covered vary from year to year, RITGlobal but includes revolutionary psychology, positive psychology, drugs and behavior, rumor psychology, intelligence, sexuality, morality, health psychology or other topics of interest to faculty and students not covered in other courses. This course can count towards any of the psychology tracks. Students may take this course for liberal arts or institute credit. (0514-210, 350, 400) Class 4, Credit 4 0509-444: The Great Thinkers This course introduces students to the thought of some of those philosophers who have been most influential in the history of ideas. An attempt is made to cover in some depth the works of one or more of those “Great Thinkers.” Students will begin to recognize the enduring nature of some of our most pressing problems, as well as the intellectual foundation of proposed solutions. Part of the philosophy degree program, the philosophy concentration and minor and may also be taken as an elective. Students design their own projects and work under the guidance of the professor. Digital analog silver mixed media and non-silver photographic techniques may be utilized. Weekly critiques are a focus activity of each course. Credit 4 0521-449 Special Topics in Public Policy: Environmental Policy This course will examine current topics in public policy and may be used with consent of advisor as a policy core elective or track elective for the public policy BS degree.
