The Solution
“Once we had determined that all of the lighting would
be LED, the Nestlé Electrical Team specified that
Philips LED luminaires should be used,” recalled Nestlé
Engineering Manager Pat Walsh. “We then worked
closely with Philips to identify which luminaires would
be used in which areas,” he continued.
The Nestlé Electrical Team appointed Silcock &
Leadham as the M&E electrical building services
designers and carried out an exercise to compare
the cost of the LED lighting installation to a more
traditional approach using fluorescent and metal
halide lighting. “While the capital expenditure was
higher for LED, the study identified that energy savings
would be in the region of £120,000 per annum with a
payback within 2.4 years. In fact, these energy savings
will be higher once the DALI control system is fully
implemented and there will be further savings on
maintenance,” Pat Walsh added.
A total of 2,300 Philips LED fittings have been
installed in the six buildings that make up the
facility, taking advantage of the wide range in the
Philips product portfolio to meet the precise lighting
requirements of each space.
For example, GentleSpace gen2 high bay lighting has
been used in five of the six buildings, with Pacific LED
providing task lighting in all factory areas. Offices are
lit using a combination of CoreView and SmartForm
Philips provides the perfect lighting
blend for coffee production
Nestlé’s new state-of-the-art coffee
production facility at Tutbury, Burtonon-Trent, is the most energy-efficient
freeze-dried coffee processing factory in
the company’s portfolio and uses Philips
LED lighting throughout its six buildings.
Sustainability is a key driver for Nestlé
group so the new Tutbury facility
features a wide range of innovations
to minimise carbon emissions and
environmental impact. A key element
of the design brief was that LED lighting
should be used throughout.

fittings, with LuxSpace in toilets and corridors, along
with strategically positioned internal emergency exit
signs and emergency bulkheads externally.
All of the fittings, including emergency lighting, will
be linked to a DALI control system from the project
controls partner Schneider Electric.
The installation was carried out by four appointed
preferred suppliers – British Gas, WT Parker, Incontrol
and Actemium - working in different buildings, with
Philips managing the delivery of fittings in-line with
project schedules.
“Philips worked really well with us. They saw what we
needed and put a robust management structure in
place to support the project,” Pat Walsh explained.
“The quality of the lighting is exceptional in terms
of uniformity and the elimination of shadows. It has
generated very positive feedback from everybody
working in the facility and colleagues from other
factories and our head office who have visited.
“This was Nestlé’s first all-LED factory and we are now
looking at opportunities for introducing LED lighting
both to upgrade existing facilities and for future new
build projects,” he concluded.
