Opportunities for service – Intergroup
officer and committee chair elections
coming soon
Elections for officers will be held at the January General Meeting
(January 26) and committee chairs will be elected at the February
General Meeting (February 23). This means there are several opportunities to be of service in Intergroup in 2015. If you are available,
please come and participate in our elections. Next month we’ll outline
the responsibilities of each of the officer positions and do the same for
committee chairs in the February issue. You can always pick up a copy
of the positions at the bookstore. You don’t have to be an Intergroup
representative to make yourself available.
Officers and committee chairs make up the Intergroup steering
committee for the year. Each committee member is responsible for their
particular job as well as working as a team on the steering committee. If
you have questions please contact any committee member listed on the
back of the newsletter or come to a steering committee meeting and see
how it works.

OLD BUSINESS: None.
NEW BUSINESS: None.
DISCUSSION ITEM: New groups added to the directory. Mike
C. ( Azure Acres fellowship): In favor of more guidelines on paper so it
is not as vague. Lori M. (3rd Step Group): Group felt there was already a
disclaimer on the directory and that there should not be more oversight.
Patty G. explained it is not more oversight, but more supporting the
groups. Jude H. (Young at Heart Group): Group concerned about the
waiting period before posting the new meeting as it could hurt smaller
groups. Barbara (Expect a Miracle): Suggested having an outreach
person attend the meeting to see if it was happening. Luann (Check it
Out Group): Is the wait time for the newsletter or the directory? Patty
explained meeting changes go into the newsletter for three months
because the directory is only printed twice a year. Joey M. (Windsor
Group): Are the meetings online immediately when they start? Patty
explained we are in flux with our website. Would like to see the meetings
updated weekly so that members can rely more on the website than on
the printed directory. John H. (12&12 at 12): Would like to see a form
before making a decision. Patty G. asked if the group would like a committee to move forward with this? The group conscience was yes. An ad
hoc committee was formed to hammer out details. Committee members
will consist of John, Kevin, Patty, Mike and Luann.
Group Representative Sharing: (None).
ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 8:56 p.m. with
the Responsibility Statement.

Panel 63 is coming to a close at the end of this year. Panels in General
Service last for two years and in Area 06 (California Northern Coastal
Area) -they always have odd numbers. All Areas in the United States and
Canada are divided equally into either even or odd number panels. The
number represents the number of conferences since the first General
Service Conference in 1951. There have been 63 conferences since the
first in 1951. In 2016 at the end of Panel 65 there will have been 65
conferences. That way at the General Service Conference in New York
there will never be a panel with all new delegates. Half will be new, and
half will have already served for one year and one conference. These
“old-timers” are assigned a new delegate to be a buddy to. There is always
someone to show the way to the newcomer, just like at a regular recovery
meeting.
On November 8, CNCA 06 elected a new panel of officers to serve
Alcoholics Anonymous in Panel 65. Our new Delegate is Raymundo L.
On February 21, 2015, District 12 will host its annual Agenda
Topics Workshop. This is an opportunity for you to find out what is on
the agenda for this year’s General Service Conference as well as meet your
new Delegate who has been chosen to serve you in Alcoholics Anonymous. Please come and join District 12 at the Bethlehem Lutheran
Church at 1300 St. Francis Road in Santa Rosa.

Bridging the Ga p
The book that will be on sale at the SCIF bookstore for December will be Experience, Strength &
Hope.
The regular price for this book is $9 and we will
be offering this book for the sale price of $7.65, a 15
percent savings for you.
Experience, Strength & Hope contains 56 retired
stories from the first three editions of the Big Book of
Alcoholics Anonymous. This anthology brings back
stories that are no longer available. This book was approved for publication by the General Service Conference in 2002.
Our co-founder Bill W., was keenly aware of the importance of
personal stories, and as he began work on collecting new material for
the second edition, he wrote: “The story section of the Big Book…is our
principal means of identifying with the reader outside of A. A.”
In case you haven’t heard the SCIF Bookstore is now offering gift
certificates for sale. If you have someone who is hard to buy for this could
be a great alternative.
We are still in need of volunteers to fill a couple of shifts that will be
vacant after the first of the year. If you have friends, sponsees or a sponsor
that have some free time and would love to be of service to the fellowship, then send them over to the bookstore.
In love and service, Donna K.
How many alcoholics have transitioned from rehab to the liquor
store without ever making it through the door of an A.A. meeting?
It’s a story I hear all too often when I give presentations to residents at
recovery facilities.
One reason is that the most natural thing for an alcoholic to do
after 28 days of confinement is to get drunk. The average person would
think that nuts, but we in A.A. can understand totally. Another reason
is that, to a fragile and confused newcomer, an A.A. meeting is a pretty
frightening place. It’s a room full of strange people who hug each other,
talk about god, and laugh about things that others would find tragic or
disgusting.
At Bridging the Gap we dedicate ourselves to making the newcomers’
introduction to A.A. more comfortable and less intimidating. By accompanying them to their first few meetings, we can introduce them to
people in the fellowship and try to answer any questions they might have
about our program and all the confusing terminology that goes with it.
If you are interested in doing this type of service work, come to our
monthly business meeting at 547 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa. We meet
on the third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Newcomers come a half hour early for
orientation.

H os pitals a nd Inst it ut ions (H & I)
Pain. Pain. PAIN. Physical pain. Have you ever had the kind of pain
that seems to (pain) get in the (pain) way of (pain) everything. Pain so
bad (pain) that you can’t (pain) even (pain) think straight (pain)?
That was a really annoying jumble of words to read, wasn’t it?
Imagine if the pain was real and not just a word on a page. That would be
really frustrating and hard, wouldn’t it?
I can’t really imagine it myself. Extreme or chronic pain haven’t been
much of an issue in my sobriety….so far…yet…luckily. It’s coming
though. It’s coming for me and, who knows, it might be coming for
you. Few of us are going to get through life without an operation or two.
Arthritis and “bad joints” and their chronic pain are practically a given if
we get on in years. Injuries, accidents and illnesses aside, even the luckiest
and healthiest among us are going to have our bouts of pain.
As Access chair, I’ve been reaching out to members to gauge interest
in the topic of pain management in sobriety. Here’s what I’ve found:
IT’S A BIG DEAL! This is extremely important to many of our
members. Pain and chronic pain can be a powerful threat to continued
sobriety. Fellowship experience has shown that there are pain-management methods that work with The Steps and Traditions that foster
sobriety and growth and there are methods that don’t. Unfortunately,
for a member encountering pain, it’s often a matter of every man or
woman for themselves, alone, to learn. For very valid Traditional reasons,
the broad topic of pain management isn’t a terribly “meeting friendly”
topic…whether we’re talking about prescribed meds, breathing techniques or acupuncture.
At Access Sonoma County, we plan to host a workshop on this topic
in the coming year and we need your help. As a fellowship, much has
been learned about what works and what doesn’t. We are looking for
members who have experience with pain management. Please share with
us your successes and your challenges…what works and what didn’t
work.
If you have experience to share or would like to be a part of creating
this workshop, please contact me at:
asc@sonomacountyaa.org or 707-596-8485
In service, Dan F
“There are those who predict that A.A. may well become the new
spearhead for a spiritual awakening throughout the world. When our
friends say these things, they are both generous and sincere. But we of
A.A. must reflect that such a tribute and such a prophecy could well
prove to be a heady drink for most of us, that is, if we really came to
believe this to be the real purpose of A.A., and if we commenced to
behave accordingly.”
“Our Society, therefore, will prudently cleave to its single purpose:
the carrying of the message to the alcoholic who still suffers. Let us resist
the proud assumption that since God has enabled us to do well in one
area we are destined to be a channel of saving grace for everybody.” [Bill
W., A.A. Comes of Age]

How can you carry the message of A.A. to an alcoholic who is

Well it has been just a fabulous two years being
your Grapevine Chairperson. Grapevine sales
are up and I hope you are remembering to renew
because that is how we stay truly self-supporting.
Grapevine pays for itself without any other funding, through its own sales.
We have those New Compilations at aagrapevine.org for Gay and Lesbian Stories and Sponsorship. You really should get a preview.
If you are a new grapevine rep. Please go to the
website and review all the resources, and the gvr
Training Manual. It will be a real eye opener and
oh so helpful. It will change that boring, “..here’s
our meeting in print...” thing every one says.
What a pleasure to be of service and you will
never know how often this service commitment
kept me sober over the last two years.
Make sure you read the jokes and write a story
at least once a year.
I’ts been a pleasure.
Suzanne Ash, Grapevine Chairperson, District 12
