Detailed station wise report Post Event Report WORLD SPACE WEEK- 04-10 Nov 2014 Theme: Space Guiding Your Way Summary Since United Nations declaration in 1999, World Space Week has grown into the largest public space event on Earth. Each year, more than 100 countries celebrate Space Week, from 4 to 10 October, to acknowledge the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition. Different activities are organized during WSW which consist of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe. The idea is to synchronize space events and attract greater public and media attention. This year space week in Muslim countries was celebrated from 4-10 November because of the reason that Eid ul Azha fell on the dates that were stipulated for WSW, so the World Space Week Association allowed Muslim countries to delay celebrations by a month. The theme for 2014 was “Space: Guiding Your Way” which features the benefits of satellite navigation to society. It aimed to highlight the benefits of satellite navigation to humankind. SUPARCO being the National Coordinator for World Space Week in Pakistan has created a network of academic institution, immature societies, NGOs and public and private institutions, which have joined our hands to promote space education and awareness in the country. This year, SUPARCO celebrated World Space Week in 10 major cities which include: Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Gilgit, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Abbottabad, and Multan and other small stations like, Larkana, Dadu, Ghotki and Tando Allah Yar. World Space Week (WSW) is celebrated in accordance with the United Nations’ General Assembly's declaration of 1999. The Third United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE III) suggested the celebration of the World Space Week. Pakistan is endeavoring to enter into the realm of Space Science & Technology and related applications. The success of any space program relies greatly on public understanding and support. It is, therefore important to communicate the benefits of Space Technology to the public on regular basis. The objective of World Space Week is to increase awareness among decision-makers and the general public, of the benefits of peaceful uses of outer space. This week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of Space Week International Association and local coordinators in many countries. Hence every year space week is celebrated by the Institute of Space Technology in coordination with SUPARCO (Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission), the national space agency. The theme of WSW for the year 2014 was “Space: Guiding Your Way”. With this theme, World Space Week organization tried to highlight the benefits of satellite navigation to society. Over recent years society has come to rely heavily on positioning and timing data from a large network of satellites. This dependency will increase even further with the launching of multiple new systems on top of the existing Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) network. With these new systems we are seeing a tremendous growth of downstream applications being developed for all imaginable professional and personal uses.
