UW OSHKOSH GUIDE
UW OSHKOSH GUIDE
About UW Oshkosh
UW Oshkosh has provided the residents of northeastern Wisconsin with high-quality,
affordable education since 1871. As the state’s third largest comprehensive university,
UW Oshkosh is committed to providing students with a broad knowledge base and
transferable skills as well as a strong sense of values and ethics to prepare them for
civic leadership.
The campus community promotes
enrichment and active learning with
opportunities for sports and recreation,
arts and culture, service learning and
career-building. More than 13,500
students benefit from the nationally
recognized expertise of our faculty, a
wide variety of courses and degrees
offered — including 57 undergraduate
majors, 15 master’s degree programs
and one doctoral program — and modest
class sizes that foster one-on-one and
collaborative learning with professors,
rather than teaching assistants.
Welcome!
UW Oshkosh, the nation’s first Fair Trade
University, has been recognized for its role
in embracing sustainable practices, such
as building “green,” examining its carbon
footprint and promoting social justice.
Located on the Fox River and near
downtown Oshkosh, the University serves
the community and beyond through a
multitude of programs, services and
partnerships, including collaborations
with other colleges, nationally and
internationally.
Welcome to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Preparing for college is an
exciting time of change for both students and their families. By staying informed and
connected to your student, parents and other family members can help ease the
transition and play a part in their student’s success. We know that parents of firstyear college students have a lot of questions. We recommend you become familiar
with all that UW Oshkosh has to offer by taking some time to review this guide.
More information for parents and
family members is available online
at www.uwosh.edu/home/parentsand-family, including tips for parents,
recommended reading, frequently
asked questions and other resources.
We also invite you to visit your
student on campus at UW Oshkosh. In
particular, parents often enjoy coming
to Oshkosh each fall for the following
campus and community-wide events:
⊲⊲ Fall Fest on the Fox: Families are
invited to a two-day festival of
recreation and entertainment held
annually in September. Activities
4
include a fabulous Fish Fry on the
Fox with music and horse-drawn
carriage tours of campus, a hearty
Breakfast with the Chancellor
and the Oshkosh Community
Dragonboat Race and Festival
held at the Leach Amphitheater.
www.uwosh.edu/fallfest
⊲⊲ Homecoming: UW Oshkosh’s annual
homecoming festivities include a
bike ride, pregame celebration and
Titans football game.

Getting Started
PARKING
With the exception of parking meters
and pay stations, all parking on the UW
Oshkosh campus is regulated by permit.
Students who plan to have an automobile,
motorcycle or moped on campus at any
time should obtain the proper permit and
a copy of the parking regulations from
the Parking Services Office, located in
the lower level of Blackhawk Commons.
Normal business hours are 7:45 a.m.–4:30
p.m. weekdays, with extended hours
during the first week of each semester.
⊲⊲ Parking permits for students living in
residence halls are limited and sold on
a seniority/lottery basis. Applications
for resident parking permits are
mailed out during the summer and
are accepted until July 31 each year,
with a subsequent lottery drawing
held in early August. Students not
selected in the lottery are placed on
a waiting list and given off-campus
parking options. Resident permits
vary in price depending on the type
(premium, regular, remote, etc.).
⊲⊲ Visitor and short-term permits
are available for $2 per day at the
Parking Services Office, the Visitor
Information Booth, located in Lot 15
(across from Reeve Memorial Union) or
at University Books & More in Reeve
Union. Holders of visitor permits may
park in any commuter lot or on the
first level of the parking ramp, located
on the corner of High and Osceola
Streets. A visitor permit is valid 6
a.m.–midnight, Monday–Thursday and
6 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Friday. Overnight
parking for visitors is available on
the first level of the parking ramp

either by using the pay by space
machines or by permit, available in the
Parking Office or Information Booth.
Visitors do not need permits from
4:30 p.m. Friday–6 a.m. Mondays;
however, parking in reserved or
restricted areas is prohibited.

RESIDENCE LIFE
Residence Life provides a variety of
services to on-campus students. Most
first- and second-year students live
on campus, unless they choose to
commute from their parents’ permanent
home address within 45 miles of UW
Oshkosh. In addition to convenience,
living on campus offers the benefits
of a community of peers, instant
A professional residence hall director
(RHD) lives in each hall. All directors have
experience in residence hall life and
an interest in and concern for people.
The director is responsible for student
staff supervision, facilities management,
crisis intervention, and developing
and maintaining an environment
conducive to learning and positive
living experiences. In the larger halls,
the RHDs are assisted by a graduate
assistant residence hall director (ARHD).

skills and values and connect
them to majors and careers.
⊲⊲ Connecting them to
campus resources.
⊲⊲ Providing students options, but
leave the decision to him or her.
⊲⊲ Showing students connections
between academic
preparation and careers.
Students work with advisers to:
⊲⊲ Clarify their interests, skills,
values and goals.

college and department
policies, procedures and
requirements for graduation.
⊲⊲ Receive assistance with their study
habits and academic progress.
⊲⊲ Take responsibility for and follow
through on decisions made
during advising sessions.
Parents can help by:
⊲⊲ Being available to support
and encourage.
⊲⊲ Offering advice, when
appropriate and requested.
⊲⊲ Maintaining regular contact.
⊲⊲ Allowing students to make
mistakes, on occasion, in
this safe environment.
Students also receive help from Peer
Advising Liaisons (PALs), “upperlevel” UW Oshkosh students who
offer academic support and a peer’s
perspective about college.

The UW Oshkosh Police Department
provides a safe environment — 24
hours a day, 365 days per year —
conducive to personal growth and
educational development. The
University’s highly trained, educated
and professional state police officers
provide fair, impartial enforcement of
state laws and UW System rules.
Student employees serve as Community

Staying Safe and Healthy
Campus Safety Resources
One of your primary concerns as
a parent may be the safety of your
student. UW Oshkosh is committed to
maintaining a safe and secure educational
environment and continues to develop
new programs and technologies to
better protect the campus community.
UW Oshkosh notifies students of campus
emergencies online via the University
home page as well as campus-wide
email notifications. An Emergency
Procedures Guide recently was created
and distributed throughout campus to help
students, faculty and staff prepare for and
respond to an emergency on campus.
Additionally, students are encouraged
to sign up to receive emergency
10
messages via text message through
Titan Alert. Alerts include University
closings, emergencies, inclement
weather updates and parking updates.
Students can register two phone
numbers with Titan Alert by visiting
www.uwosh.edu/home/titanalert.
In the event of inclement weather,
students will be notified of class delays
or cancellations via the University
home page, campus-wide email and, if
registered, Titan Alert. They also can call
the weather line at (920) 424-0000.
For more information about these
and other measures UW Oshkosh
has in place to ensure the safety of
your student, visit www.uwosh.edu/

for supplies, procedures, lab tests and
medications. Charges may be paid by
cash, check and TitanCard or billed to the
student’s University account. The health

immunizations should be up to date. You
may refer to the Wisconsin Immunization
Registry at http://www.dhs.wisconsin.

requirements for entrance into college.
Students should be covered locally by a
health insurance plan, and they should
carry a copy of their health insurance
card. They need to be aware of which
medical facilities and medical providers
in the community are covered by their
health insurance plan. For students who
do not have health insurance, information
about a plan endorsed by the University
can be found at www.sas-mn.com.

Finding Support Services
Center for Academic Resources
Reading/Study Center
Funded primarily by student differential
tuition fees, the Center for Academic
Resources (CAR), located in Student
Success Center 102, provides free
tutoring for undergraduate students.
Students can receive individual tutoring
for most courses on campus.
The Reading/Study Center, Nursing/
Education 201, offers students at all
stages of academic development an
opportunity to acquire more sophisticated
reading and study techniques.
For students in large, challenging classes,
CAR also provides a group tutoring
program called Supplemental Instruction
(SI). As an alternative to one-on-one
tutoring, SI offers students three hours
of prepared group review sessions each
week of the semester. Students can
attend as many SI sessions as they want,
including special exam reviews prior to
major tests in the course. Peer Educator
Review Sessions (PERS) provide one
group tutoring session per week for
many classes which do not provide SI.
Disability Services
The Disability Services Office provides
accommodations to students with
documented disabilities through the
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Our goal is to provide equal opportunity
and equal challenge in the pursuit of
your academic goals. Our office offers
permanent and temporary reasonable
accommodations for students with
physical, medical, psychological,
ADD/ADHD and learning disabilities.
Accommodations are designed on
an individual basis and may include
note taking, proctoring, alternative
testing, extended time testing,
recording of lectures, interpreting
and alternative electronic text.
Developmental
Mathematics Program
UW Oshkosh’s Developmental
Mathematics Program consists of two
pre-college-level algebra courses:
Math 100: Elementary Algebra and
Math 103: Intermediate Algebra.
Students in these courses are
encouraged to access free tutoring in
the Swart Hall room 301 Developmental
Mathematics Lab. The lab is staffed
by graduate students and supported
by undergraduate tutor assistants.
A third service is English assistance.
Students for whom English is a second
or non-native language often want to
build their English skills, and they can
schedule individual appointments with
the professional English language tutor
in CAR. Together, they can work on
general or course-specific vocabulary,
pronunciation and oral presentations,
English grammar and textbook reading.
(920) 424-2290 • www.uwosh.edu/car
Students may choose to schedule an
individual appointment or attend a variety
of one-hour workshops about topics,
such as test preparation, test taking,
textbook study, active learning strategies,
note taking and PPST/Praxis II exam
preparation. Self-help resources also
are available, including learning strategy
packets, lending library and online links.
In addition, students are encouraged to
register for any of the following onecredit, seven-week courses: Intrdscp.
125 Comprehensive Study Skills
and Intrdscp. 169 College Reading
Strategies. A two-credit course,
Intrdscp. 100 Dev. Reading (paired with
Geography 102), also is available.

Student Support Services
Funded through a U.S. Department
of Education grant, Student Support
Services (SSS) offers eligible students
free, individualized attention. Services
include academic advising, strategies
for academic success, career and major
exploration and connections to campus
resources. To take part, students
must be citizens or permanent U.S.
residents, and they must meet one of
the following criteria: first-generation
college student (neither parent has a

Writing Center
The Writing Center offers all UW Oshkosh
students free, confidential writing support
and feedback. In 2010–11, we worked with
students in 56 different majors with writing
assignments in 247 different classes.
More than 20 percent of the students
we saw last year came for help with
applications and other personal writing.
Our one-to-one sessions last up to
50 minutes, and students are allowed
up to two appointments per week.

Career Services
UW Oshkosh students “get hired!”
by taking advantage of the many
opportunities, programs and resources
offered by Career Services. The office
is dedicated to creating an environment
for students to access the professional
development opportunities and
resources for success in the work world,
regardless of today’s economy.

UW OSHKOSH GUIDE
Whether participating in one of our
programs or networking with professionals
at a career fair, Career Services helps
your student achieve career goals
throughout their years on campus. Career
Services is also available to alumni.
As freshmen, students can participate in
Career Services events and programs,
including mock interviews, dining with
professionals, career fairs and resume
walk-ins. They can also meet one-onone with a career adviser specifically
focused in their major or search
for part-time, on-campus positions
through the Titan Jobs database.
It is not too early for your student to
begin exploring careers and developing
a professional resume. Two great
opportunities for students to start are the
Student Employment Fair on Tuesday,
Sept. 6 and the Fall 2012 Career Fair
on the Fox on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Veterans Resource Center
The Veterans Resource Center is
dedicated to providing support for our
University’s active duty veterans, guard
members, reservists, and dependents of
veterans. We will assist you throughout
the benefit application process, in
coordinating campus and community
resources and in helping you find
the support you need to reach your
goals. The Veterans Resource Center
features a veteran study lounge, a
computer lab, CAC readers and resource
materials. Thank you for your service!
Exploring Academic
Opportunities
UW Oshkosh offers students many opportunities outside the classroom
to challenge themselves academically and explore the world. For more
information about our academic offerings, visit www.uwosh.edu/home/futurestudents/undergraduate/academics.
National Student Exchange
The National Student Exchange (NSE)
program provides affordable and
practical semester- and year-long
study opportunities at approximately
200 colleges and universities within
the U.S. and Canada. The exchange
allows students to study outside of
Wisconsin while paying tuition to UW
Oshkosh; it’s a great way to experience
new settings in which to study and live
without paying out-of-state tuition!
NSE students explore new academic
options, immerse themselves in a
different environment, search for
graduate schools or future employment,
acquire life skills, experience life from
a new point of view and expand their
personal and educational perspectives.

Study Abroad
Study abroad is a transformative
experience leading to personal growth
and active engagement in the pursuit of
knowledge and skills. It offers options
for advancing unique and diverse
personal and professional goals.
UW Oshkosh runs programs that can last
from one week to a full year abroad.
On faculty-led programs, a UW Oshkosh
faculty member accompanies a group of
UW Oshkosh students throughout their
stay in the foreign country or on an entry
tour at the beginning of the experience.
In traditional study abroad and exchange
programs, UW Oshkosh students travel
individually or in groups to study at one of
UW Oshkosh’s partner institutions abroad.
Students are enrolled directly in the host
institution and typically are part of the
general student body. These programs
offer a high level of immersion, a wide
range of courses at the host institution
and use of the host institution’s facilities.
