About UW Oshkosh
UW Oshkosh has provided the residents of northeastern Wisconsin with high-quality,
affordable education since 1871. As the state’s largest comprehensive university,
UW Oshkosh is committed to providing students with a broad knowledge base and
transferable skills as well as a strong sense of values and ethics to prepare them for
civic leadership.
The campus community promotes
enrichment and active learning with
opportunities for sports and recreation,
arts and culture, service learning and
career building. More than 13,500
students benefit from the nationally
recognized expertise of our faculty, a
wide variety of courses and degrees
offered — including 60 undergraduate
majors, 13 master’s degree programs
and one doctoral program — and modest
class sizes that foster one-on-one and
collaborative learning with professors,
rather than teaching assistants.
Welcome!
UW Oshkosh, the nation’s first Fair Trade
University, has been recognized for its role
in embracing sustainable practices, such
as building “green,” examining its carbon
footprint and promoting social justice.
Located on the Fox River and near
downtown Oshkosh, the University serves
the community and beyond through a
multitude of programs, services and
partnerships, including collaborations
with other colleges, nationally and
internationally.
Welcome to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Preparing for college is an
exciting time of change for both students and their families. By staying informed and
connected to your student, parents and other family members can help ease the
transition and play a part in their student’s success. We know that parents of firstyear college students have a lot of questions. We recommend you become familiar
with all that UW Oshkosh has to offer by taking some time to review this guide.
More information for parents and
family members is available online
at www.uwosh.edu/home/parentsand-family, including tips for parents,
recommended reading, frequently
asked questions and other resources.
We also invite you to visit your
student on campus at UW Oshkosh. In
particular, parents often enjoy coming
to Oshkosh each fall for the following
campus and community-wide events:
⊲ Fall Fest on the Fox: Families are
invited to a two-day festival of
recreation and entertainment held
annually in September. Activities

in the administration of federal, state,
institutional and private grants, loans,
scholarships and work-study funds. The
only application necessary is the Free

Residence Life
Parking
Residence Life provides a variety of
services to on-campus students. Most firstand second-year students live on campus,
unless they choose to commute from their
parents’ permanent home address within
45 miles of UW Oshkosh. In addition to
convenience, living on campus offers the
benefits of a community of peers, instant
access to staff, a safe environment and
support for the challenges associated
with being a busy college student.
With the exception of parking meters

UW Oshkosh GUIDE
Exploring Academic
Resources
UW Oshkosh offers students many
opportunities outside the classroom
to challenge themselves academically
and explore the world. For more
information about our academic offerings,
visit www.uwosh.edu/home/futurestudents/undergraduate/academics.
Starting in fall 2013, UW Oshkosh students
will be welcomed to the University Studies
Program (USP)—a newly created, oneof-a-kind general education program.
The USP is the gateway to a 21st century
college education where students will
be encouraged to explore and question
like never before. To learn more about
USP, visit www.uwosh.edu/usp.
Center for Academic Resources
Funded primarily by student differential
tuition fees, the Center for Academic
Resources (CAR), located in Student
Success Center 102, provides free
tutoring for undergraduate students.
Students can receive individual tutoring
for most courses on campus.
For students in large, challenging classes,
CAR also provides a group-tutoring
program called Supplemental Instruction
(SI) as an alternative to one-on-one
tutoring. SI offers students three hours
of prepared group review sessions each
week of the semester. Students can
attend as many SI sessions as they want,
including special exam reviews prior to
major tests in the course. Peer Educator
Review Sessions (PERS) provide one
group tutoring session per week for
many classes that do not provide SI.
A third service is English assistance.
Students for whom English is a second
or non-native language often want to
build their English skills, and they can
schedule individual appointments with
the professional English language tutor
in CAR. Together, they can work on
general or course-specific vocabulary,
pronunciation and oral presentations,
English grammar and textbook reading.

math course is open so that the students
can complete homework exercises
immediately after every class session
in the Swart301 lab. The lab is staffed
by graduate students and supported
by undergraduate tutor assistants.

Undergraduate Advising
Resource Center
Located in Student Success Center 202,
the Undergraduate Advising Resource
Center (UARC), in partnership with the
campus community, seeks to empower
students to articulate and achieve their
personal, educational and career goals.
During orientation, your student will
meet with and be assigned to a UARC
adviser. Later, a faculty adviser will be
designated.
Advisers help students:
•
Identify their interests, skills and
values and connect them to majors
and careers.
•
Connect with campus resources.
•
By providing options, but leave the
decision to the student.
•
Understand connections between
academic preparation and careers.
A typical course load will range from 12
to 18 credits per semester. All students
will complete a minimum of 120 credits
to graduate including University Studies
Program (USP), degree and major
requirements. Some students may also
need to complete remedial coursework.
Students work with advisers to:
14
•
Clarify their interests, skills,
values and goals.
•
Explore majors and careers
as they relate to their goals.
•
Learn and understand University,
college and department
policies, procedures and
requirements for graduation.
•
Receive assistance with their study
habits and academic progress.
•
Take responsibility for and follow
through on decisions made during
advising sessions.

Writing Center
The Writing Center offers all UW
Oshkosh students free writing
feedback and support. In 2011–
12, we worked with students in 56
different majors with writing assignments
in 248 different classes. More than 15
percent of the students we saw last
year came for help with applications
and other personal writing.
For University policies and degree and
major requirements, see www.uwosh.edu/
registrar/bulletins/bulletin/2013-2015.
Our one-to-one sessions last up to
50 minutes, and students are allowed
up to two appointments per week.
Visit our website, call, or stop by Suite
102 of the Student Success Center to
schedule an appointment.
Students also receive help from Peer
Advising Liaisons (PALs), “upper-level” UW
Oshkosh students who offer academic
support and a peer’s perspective about
college.

Staying Safe and Healthy
Campus Safety Resources
Counseling Center
One of your primary concerns as a parent
may be the safety of your student. UW
Oshkosh is committed to maintaining
a safe and secure educational
environment and continues to develop
new programs and technologies to
better protect the campus community.
The Counseling Center provides free
and confidential time limited services
to UWO enrolled students to address
their personal, career and academic
success. Students receive support
and opportunities to develop life
skills to manage stress, relationship
conflict, depression/anxiety, family
issues, substance abuse, body image,
self-esteem, relationship or sexual
violence, impacts of racism, LGBTQ
issues and academic performance
and other common issues.
UW Oshkosh notifies students of campus
emergencies online via the University
home page as well as campus-wide email
notifications. An Emergency Procedures
Guide is available and distributed
throughout campus to help students,
faculty and staff prepare for and
respond to an emergency on campus.
Additionally, students are encouraged
to sign up to receive emergency
messages via text message through
Titan Alert. Alerts include University
closings, emergencies, inclement
weather updates and parking updates.
Students can register multiple
numbers with Titan Alert by visiting
www.uwosh.edu/home/titanalert.
In the event of inclement weather,
students will be notified of class delays
or cancellations via the University
home page, campus-wide email and, if
registered, Titan Alert. They also can
call the weather line at (920) 424-0000.
For more information about these
and other measures UW Oshkosh
has in place to ensure the safety of
your student, visit www.uwosh.edu/
home/current-students/safety.

Student Health Center
UW Oshkosh’s Student Health Center
provides a full range of health care
services to all registered students.
The staff consists of experienced and
credentialed professionals, including
physicians, nurse practitioners, dietitian,
nurses, medical technologists, health
educator and support personnel.
The Student Health Center’s mission
is to offer students primary outpatient
medical care and brief psychiatry that is
affordable and accessible. We provide
a wide range of services to include:
wellness care and education, injury
care, referrals, allergy injections, sexual
health, travel consultations, physicals,
laboratory testing and pharmacy service.
Most office visits are free; minimal
charges apply for supplies, procedures,
lab tests and medications. Charges may
be paid by cash, check and TitanCard
or billed to the student’s University
account. The health center does not bill
health insurance. Upon request a copy of
your charges will be provided for you to
submit to your insurance carrier. Please
check the website for current price list.
To avoid unintended illness, it is
recommended that immunizations are
current. You may view immunization
history and recommendations on
the Wisconsin Immunization Registry
at http://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/
immunization/wir.htm. There are
no immunization requirements
for entrance into college.
www.universityparent.com/oshkosh
It is recommended that all students are
covered by a health insurance plan, and
carry a copy of their health insurance
card. For students who do not have
health insurance, information about a
plan endorsed by the University can be
found at www.uwosh.edu/health_center.
Medical care is confidential. If you
would like us to share information about
care received at student health, please
complete a Medical Authorization for
Release of Information. The form is found
on the student health center website.

University Police
The UW Oshkosh Police Department
provides a safe environment—24
hours a day, 365 days per year—
conducive to personal growth and
educational development. The
University’s highly trained, educated
and professional state police officers
provide fair, impartial enforcement of
state laws and UW System rules.
Student employees serve as Community
Service Officers (CSOs), who work in
pairs to help provide safety and security
by patrolling campus on foot and working
station security in the residence halls.
The CSOs also provide, by request, safe
escorts to students and employees who
wish to be escorted at night to or from
anywhere within a few blocks of the main
campus.
