LIFELONG LEARNING COURSES
The Division of Lifelong Learning offers a number of academic credit courses. It
is important that the student read the schedule carefully in order to determine the
means that will be used for the delivery of the particular course chosen. Courses
are offered by Internet/Online, television, or ITV. Students enrolling in televised
courses must choose courses based upon where they live and how they receive
televised courses, i.e., via SITV, KGCS, OPT or other cable system. Distant students must also read the directions for contacting the bookstore and arranging
book delivery. Most Internet/Online, televised, or ITV courses follow the same
semester schedule as regular in class courses. There are also a variety of other
courses. Check the Schedule for Delayed Start and other “off” schedule courses.
All Distance Education courses are instructor led, not self-paced and students are
expected to actively participate. Proctored exams may be required. See the
procedures for obtaining a proctor, which is posted on the LLL website and on
page 48 of this schedule book.
ADMISSION AND FINANCIAL AID: Students registering that have not completed the university admission process will be registered as “non-degree seeking
students.” After completion of the admission process, students will have their
status changed to “degree seeking.” The credit hours earned or grades received
are not impacted by the status designation. A student must be fully admitted and
degree-seeking to receive financial aid. For information concerning admission
contact (417) 781-MSSU (6778). Financial aid information may be obtained by
calling (417) 625-9325.
ADMISSION FORM: All first time students taking university credit courses must
submit an admission form. An admission form may be requested by phone by
dialing (417) 781-MSSU (6778) or at Missouri Southern’s website at www.mssu.
edu/admissions/.
REGISTRATION: Students registering in televised instruction, or ITV course(s)
may enroll by phoning our toll free number at (877) 837-8527. It is recommended
that students have all prerequisites necessary for a course prior to registering
(prerequisites may be waived for some courses). Students who are registering
for an MSSU Online degree program as a fully online student (who will not attend
classes on campus) must contact an Online Concierge in the Division of Lifelong
Learning by phoning (877) 837-8527 or emailing: online-advising@mssu.edu.
Tuition, per credit hour, based on residency (Missouri Resident/NonResident), and a $60 per credit hour distance learning fee is charged for
each Lifelong Learning course (Internet/Online, televised, and ITV courses).
PAYMENT OF FEES: Please refer to page 6.
COURSE DROP OR UNIVERSITY WITHDRAWAL
PROCEDURE FOR DISTANCE LEARNERS: Students registered only in distance learning courses and no on-campus courses who are considering dropping a
course must first contact: online-advising@mssu.edu or telephone (877) 837-8527.
1. Students renting textbooks will not be officially dropped until books have
been returned and received in the university bookstore.
(Students
enrolled in both distance learning courses and on campus courses in the
same semester must follow the normal on campus drop procedure.)
2. All students considering a complete withdrawal from MSSU (regardless of
financial aid status) must contact the Financial Aid office at 417 625-9325
or if on campus may come by the Financial Aid office in Hearnes Hall to
obtain information on the process and the implications to current or future
financial aid.
BOOKS FOR DISTANCE LEARNING STUDENTS: Missouri Southern uses a
Rental Text Program that allows students to rent most texts. A student’s booklist
may be found online at www.mssu.edu by accessing LioNet. Your booklist will
specify the required textbooks requested for your classes. If the student is on
campus rental textbooks may be picked up at Textbook Rental in the lower level
of Billingsly Student Center beginning Tuesday January 3, 2012.
Books may be ordered online at www.mssubookstore.com then selecting
“Textbooks and Course Materials”. Payment for online book orders can be made
by credit card or to your university account through the “Bookstore Charge”
option. All charges for spring must be paid by Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 5:00
p.m. Students that prefer to pick up and return textbooks in person can avoid the
shipping charge. The shipping fee is $10.00 for the first book and $1 for each
additional book. Allow 3-5 business days for delivery. For international shipments
please contact the Online Admissions Advisor.
BOOKSTORE HOURS: (See page 7)
RENTAL TEXTBOOK RETURNS: Students in Internet courses must have
Spring 2012 rental textbooks returned or postmarked by Monday May 21 at 4:00
p.m. Books not received or received with a later postmark will be billed to the
students account for the retail price of the book. This fee may be reduced to a
late fee equal to the current rental fee when returned by Thursday, June 21, 2012.
A book drop is located behind Billingsly Student Center for after-hours drop off.
TUITION & FEE REFUND POLICY: (See page 6)
REPAYMENT NOTICE FOR FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID: (See page 6)
TESTING PROCEDURES FOR LIFELONG LEARNING COURSES
If you are enrolling in a distance learning course you may be required to take a
proctored exam. Information may be obtained online or by contacting the Lifelong
Learning Office located at Webster Hall, Room #116 (417) 625-9887 or email
Douglas-R@mssu.edu. Students must call the office if a proctor form is
needed. The form must be filled out by the proposed proctor and student
prior to the first exam. Proctors are generally high-school counselors, local
librarians, or approved company or public officials. Proctors must have fax
capability. The Office of Lifelong Learning must approve all proctors before
tests are faxed to the proctor’s location. Students will have to present a
picture ID to the Proctor before taking their exam. Students must also call
twenty-four (24) hours in advance to schedule their test.
Students are responsible for any proctor fees. If required, students may have to
pay a fee for the Proctor’s time and effort. Students must contact (417) 625-9887
or our toll free number (877) 837-8527 each time a test is taken to schedule a test
twenty-four (24) hours in advance. On-campus tests may be taken on Saturdays
starting at 8:00 A.M. with tests being finished by 11:30 A.M.
TESTING FOR INTERNET/ONLINE COURSES: An Online instructor may
require online students to utilize a proctor. These students must contact the
Office of Lifelong Learning one week in advance of the test for instructions. The
requirements concerning approval of the proctor appear in a previous section.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR
DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES
Question: I live quite a distance from Joplin. Can I still take
university credit courses from Missouri Southern?
Answer: Yes. MSSU offers televised courses and Internet courses. We
have students in several states and in different countries around
the world. We also transmit over cable television stations in
Carthage, Lamar, Monett, Neosho, via Southern Instructional
Television, (SITV) and the streaming server. Classes are televised in 57 counties on KOZK/KOZJ Ozarks Public Television.
Additional classes are broadcast over Missouri Southern’s
Television station KGCS via Joplin’s Cable One system, and on
Mediacom.
Question: Does this mean I will never have to come to the
MSSU campus?
Answer: No. While Internet students usually take tests online, if you view
Televised or Video courses in Neosho, Carthage, or the Joplin
area, you will have to come to campus to take your tests. If you
make an appointment to take an exam you are expected to keep
the appointment.
Question: How do I know what textbooks I need?
Answer: A student’s booklist may be found online at www.mssu.edu by
accessing LioNet then going to Quick Links. Internet/Online students will be emailed a list of required textbooks and/or course
materials. Your booklist will specify the required textbooks for
your classes. The student is responsible for acquiring the necessary textbooks.
Question: I live over 30 miles from campus. How can I get
my books?
Answer: A student’s booklist may be found online at www.mssu.edu by
accessing LioNet. Your booklist will specify the required textbooks
requested for your classes. Spring rental textbooks may be
picked up at Textbook Rental in the lower level of Billingsly
Student Center beginning Tuesday, January 3, 2012. Books may
be ordered online at www.mssubookstore.com and selecting
“Textbooks and Course Materials”. Payment for online book
orders can be made by credit card or to your university account
through the “Bookstore Charge” option. All charges must be
paid by Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. Students that
prefer to pick up and return textbooks in person can avoid the
shipping charge. The shipping fee is $10.00 for the first book and
$1 for each additional book. Allow 3-5 business days for delivery.
For international shipments please contact the Online Concierge.
Question: Do I have to take the exams at the same time the
students on campus take them? Where do I take
them?
Answer: Class instructors determine test deadlines. You may contact
Robin Douglas at (417) 625-9887 or email Douglas-R@mssu.edu.
To schedule exams call (417) 625-9577 or our toll free number (877)
837-8527.
Question: How do I get class handouts throughout the semester?
Answer: Your instructor will fax short handouts to your off campus sites; some
materials will be mailed to your home, and some materials will be
sent to your email address or posted on the class website.
INTERNET/ONLINE COURSES
Question: Question: What is Blackboard?
Answer: Blackboard is the Learning Management System (LMS) used to
deliver instruction via the Internet. Instructors may also use the
LMS to “enhance” their courses providing students “anytime-anywhere” access to course information or to teach entirely Internet/
Online courses.
Question: What are the software/hardware requirements?
Answer: In order to participate in any of the Internet/Online courses offered
you must have access to a reliable Internet connection and an e-mail
account. Minimum computer requirements: a 56 KB modem or
higher; Internet Explorer web browser able to accommodate both
JavaScript and Java; a multimedia capable PC to include CD player,
sound card, and speakers with a processor speed of at least a
Pentium 400 MHz or equivalent with a minimum of 64 MB of memory. Microsoft Office 2007/Windows 7 is the current campus standard
for application software. If you do not own or do not wish to purchase
Microsoft Office, you may download a free productivity suite, which
includes a document writer, slide show creator and spread sheet
program, at http://www.openoffice.org. This free productivity suite is
compatible with most of the Microsoft Office materials your instructors will use in their courses. An increasing number of classes will
also require access to high speed Internet.
In addition, when taking quizzes and tests, you may be required to
use the Respondus Lockdown Browser. This is a free browser that
must be downloaded from within your Blackboard course site or from
the download link provided on MSSU’s Blackboard log-on page.
There is also a link to a video tutorial detailing how to download and
install the browser, available on MSSU’s Blackboard log-on page.
The Respondus Lockdown Browser restricts the user from accessing
any other functions on his or her computer while taking a quiz or test
in Blackboard that requires the use of the browser. It is a very good
idea to download, install and practice opening the browser and
accessing your courses using the browser before any tests or quizzes are assigned. If issues arise, please contact Blackboard Help.
Question: How do I find my course site?
Answer: If you are enrolled in a course(s) using Blackboard, you can access
it through a link in LioNet, or directly by keying in the web site
address of http://mssu.blackboard.com. Click on the Login Button
then use your LioNet ID and PIN (password) to log in to Blackboard.
Courses you are enrolled in will be found in the “My Courses” listing
of your personalized Blackboard Welcome page.
Question: What is my Username and Password?
Answer: Blackboard can be accessed through LioNet, or directly by keying in
the address: http://mssu.blackboard.com. When accessing directly,
to log in please enter your MSSU Student ID (SID) and password in
all UPPERCASE.
Question: Whom do I call for help?
Answer: The primary point of contact if you are experiencing problems is our
helpdesk.
Phone: (417) 625-9885 or E-mail: blackboardhelp@
mssu.edu. If you live outside of the local calling area, we have a toll
free number: 1 (877) 837-8527. In addition, at certain hours of the
day we have an online chat available through a link on our website.

Question: Where can I go for more information on using
Blackboard?
Answer: All students are enrolled in a “demonstration” Blackboard course
site to provide answers to questions and help with navigating and
using Blackboard. Prior to obtaining your student ID and password, you may log into the demonstration site with the username
“demouser” and the password “demouser.” Please refer to “how
do I find my course site” for the Blackboard web address. In addition, we have “how to” information posted on our website to help
with several important blackboard features: http://www.mssu.edu/
academics/life-long-learning click on Blackboard Resources.
The Frequently asked Questions (FAQ) area on our web site also
provides answers to many more questions associated with using
Blackboard.
Question: My instructor said we need to download a program or get some plug-in. What does that mean?
Answer: Please see our web site: http://www.mssu.edu/academics/lifelong-learning. Under the Student Resources tab you will see
“viewers and plug-ins”. This link will provide definitions for common Internet terms as well as links to some of the more common
required tools for accessing your course materials.

UNIVERSITY CREDIT FOR LIFE/WORK EXPERIENCE
The philosophy of university credit for life/work experience is based upon the
concept that not all learning takes place in a classroom. Universities are not
interested in having students spend time in classes re-learning what they know
or have learned through “life experience.” However, not all life experiences are
directly transferable or comparable to university experiences or university credit
.
Portfolio Assessment is a means utilized to document learning so that faculty
can determine if the student’s prior learning experiences are equivalent to university credit. Student created portfolios document learning that has taken place
through seminars, training programs, Military experience, work experience,
travel, volunteer work, community service, or artistic endeavors. The learning
must be verifiable and equivalent to that usually obtained in a university level
course. The learning should not be so specific as to not have applicability to other
situations or environments. For additional information see the website at http://
www.mssu.edu/academics/life-long-learning; you may also call (877) 837.8527.

PROFESSIONAL CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSES
Continuing Education courses are designed for professional and personal enrichment.
A student may withdraw from a continuing education course. If the student withdraws before the first class meeting fees will be refunded. Refunds after the start
of the course will be based upon the date of withdrawal and the number of class
sessions completed by that date. No refunds will be made after 1/3 of the class
sessions have met. To withdraw the student must use the online withdraw form at
http://www.mssu.edu/academics/life-long-learning/index.php.
Pre-Enrollment Procedure
Students may enroll in Continuing Education courses by filling out the brief enrollment form for Continuing Education courses located on page 50 or online at http://
www.mssu.edu/academics/life-long-learning/index.php. Every student must be
signed up and have their course selection(s) paid before the first class meeting. In
some cases, where class size is limited, the first students who sign up and are paid
will be enrolled in the class. The check should contain the student’s Social Security
number and designate the desired CRN number(s). Courses are computerized by
CRN number rather than name. The address for mailing is located on the enrollment form on page 50. Students will not receive a confirmation of enrollment due to
the lack of time between enrollment and the course starting date. However, if the
course should be cancelled due to lack of enrollment, students will be contacted
utilizing the phone number they have provided on the enrollment form.
If mailing time does not permit for pre-enrollment, the student may call the Continuing Education office at (417) 625-9384 to check on class availability. If space is
still available, enrollment may be completed by Internet at http://www.mssu.edu/
academics/life-long-learning/index.php and payment by use of a major credit card
may be made through the Bursar’s Office.
