TRENDS FOR 2014
Prognostications for the legal profession regarding the coming year abound at the
beginning of January — some are calling for the end of BigLaw, a few are looking for its
heyday to return. A handful of local experts, including a few from BigLaw, weigh in with
their predictions for 2014 in this issue, and the new normal — expect the unexpected —
looks like it will continue. This year’s authors include Randy Miller of Bryan Cave; John
Baker of the new Colorado Attorney Mentoring Program; and Sarah Clark, the departing
counsel to retiring Chief Justice Michael Bender.

to the dismantling of the agency’s extensive surveillance of American activists, mailed
documents they stole to major newspapers.

Copies also found their way to the basement office
of The Phoenix, the student-run newspaper at
Swarthmore College, which operated with a volunteer
staff and a shoestring budget.
Andy Low was a managing editor at the Phoenix
in the spring of 1971. He helped put out the Friday
edition of the twice-weekly paper. And Thursday,
April 1, he was preparing for another late night at the
newspaper's office in the student center, getting the
paper ready for press.
Late that afternoon, Low, now an attorney at Davis
Graham & Stubbs in Denver, was contacted by the
paper's editor, Martha Shirk. She needed to show him
something, right away.
