Howard University Announces Dr. Robert E. Taylor as College of Medicine Dean
Washington, D.C., January 28, 2008 – Today, Howard University Senior Vice President of
Health Sciences Donald E. Wilson, M.D., M.A.C.P., announced the appointment of Robert E.
Taylor, M.D., Ph.D., as Dean of the College of Medicine, effective January 21, 2008.
As dean, Dr. Taylor will be the Chief Academic Officer of the College of Medicine and will be
responsible for providing oversight of the academic, financial and operational performance of the
College, and all of its operating units, including the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan.
He will also be responsible for developing and administering an annual operating and capital
budget for the College of Medicine that will accelerate its further academic and research
development and maintain the financial integrity and accreditation of the various academic
programs of the College and clinical training programs in Howard University Hospital and
affiliated hospitals.
Dr. Taylor has served as Interim Dean of the College of Medicine since August 2005 and Chair,
Department of Pharmacology since 1992. He also is Director of the Howard University Alcohol
Research Center, funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Taylor is a
member of the Research Society on Alcoholism, Fellow of the American College of Physicians,
the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the American Society of
Hematology, the Academy of Medicine of Washington D. C., the Medical Society of the District
of Columbia., the National Medical Association, the Medico-Chirurgical Society of the District
of Columbia, Inc. and the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha He is the author or coauthor of over 85 scientific articles, book chapters and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals.
He earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s degree in Pharmacology from Butler University,
a Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology/Toxicology from Purdue University, and doctor of medicine
degree from Vanderbilt University.
