Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) is part of meeting Meaningful Use (MU) criteria for Electronic Health Records (EHR). CPOE is defined by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Stage 2 as “A provider's use of computer assistance to directly enter medical orders (for example, medications, consultations with other providers, laboratory services, imaging studies, and other auxiliary services) from a computer or mobile device.” The American Institute of Healthcare Compliance, Inc. (AIHC) submitted an inquiry to CMS regarding specific direction related to qualifications of those who can enter an order into CEHRT (Certified Electronic Health Record Technology). CMS provided (in part) to AIHC the following: “If a staff member of the eligible provider is appropriately credentialed and performs similar assistive services as a medical assistant but carries a more specific title due to either specialization of their duties or to the specialty of the medical professional they assist, he or she can use the CPOE function of CEHRT and have it count towards the measure. This determination must be made by the eligible provider based on individual workflow and the duties performed by the staff member in question. Whether a staff member carries the title of medical assistant or another job title, he or she must be credentialed to perform the medical assistant services by an organization other than the employing organization. Also, each provider must evaluate his or her own ordering workflow, including the use of CPOE, to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local law and professional guidelines.” Who is qualified to enroll in this course? This program is recommended for individuals who perform assistive services in their practices and have sufficient knowledge, experience, and training to properly handle any such alerts that may appear when entering orders into the CPOE system. In addition, AIHC requires an employer letter of recommendation to support these qualifications for those interested in taking the certification exam. AIHC cannot and will not assess or determine the ability of any person enrolled in this course. If you have questions related to Meaningful Use, please contact Medicare directly or go to http://cms.gov/EHRIncentivePrograms. Membership Requirement (Restriction) AIHC membership is open to the public, health care workers and administrators as well as certified healthcare auditors, collectors and compliance officers. To uphold a high standard, AIHC follows the guidelines recommended by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) regarding retention of excluded individuals. For many years the Congress of the United States has worked diligently to protect the health and welfare of the nation's elderly and poor by implementing legislation to prevent certain individuals and businesses from participating in Federally-funded health care programs. The OIG, under this Congressional mandate, established a program to exclude individuals and entities affected by these various legal authorities, contained in sections 1128 and 1156 of the Social Security Act, and maintains a list of all currently excluded parties called the List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (See OIG website at www.oig.hhs.gov). No individual whose name appears on the OIG Excluded Individuals Entities List may hold membership in AIHC; and any member whose name is added to this list will have his/her membership status revoked without refund. “My signature below indicates I have read this restriction for membership and attest that I am not currently on the OIG exclusion list at the date this application has been submitted for membership to the American Institute of Healthcare Compliance.” _________________________________________________ Signature _________________________ Date CPOE Program to Certify for Meaningful Use - Copyright 2015 – Prices Subject to change
