has 320 users, some of whom post loyally.
“I’ve gotten through to more people
through the Paducah Underground site
than Myspace or anything else,” said
Brian Hooper of Hooper Booking and
Promotions.
Underground member for nearly two
years, Hooper books and promotes area
concerts and uses the site to reach music
fans.
“It’s a strong sense of community on
there. There’s not always (safe) language,
but it’s really informative and easy to
use,” Hooper said.
The site’s content is virtually uncensored.
“I get on there almost every day to
keep up with what people are talking
about,” Richards said. “But I do my best
to avoid having to censor anything. Basi-
cally the rules are pretty scarce if they
exist at all ... so really there’s not maintenance involved for me.”
The site is a Web-based application
hosted by ProBoards.com. Richards followed ProBoards’ tutorials to launch the
message board and other than adding
design features he hasn’t had to manipulate the site.
The site is divided into five broad
categories:
■ General — general comments.
■ Shows — local and out-of-town concerts.
■ Band Forums — information on
four area punk bands.
■ Other Forums — like an area roller
derby league.
■ Classifieds — CD swaps, sales and
“musicians wanted” listings.
“For a lot of the younger people these
days it seems like it’s more comfortable
to talk (online) than to talk face to face,”
Joseph Rumsey said. “At the moment
there’s no actual physical place where
people can hang out and have a good
time, especially young people because
you can’t go to bars or anything. (The
site) gives younger people a place to hang
out and talk about stuff.”
When people register with the site they
can detail a profile about themselves, assign their account a photo or avatar, and
create a representation of themselves.
Whether interest in the site grows or
declines, Richards hopes it keeps up with
the area’s music.
“I just hope the board reflects the underground music scene,” he said.

shows plus many classics, and
a vast amount of other stuff
as well. Like the ABC and
CBS sites, you’ll get current
episodes, and the full season
as well. But, alas, Hulu makes
their (nice) episode sites feel
clunky and a little moldy.
Yes, there’s advertising
here, but in a funny way, you’ll
almost welcome it. “So this is
the price to pay ...?” Big deal.
Worth it. An example: I picked,
for no particular reason, the pilot episode of the classic “Fire-
fly.” You get a choice — either
the full trailer for “Leatherhead,” or “regular commercial
interruptions” (which, like at,
say, ABC, involves a 30-second
spot at the outset.) If you pick
“Leatherhead,” then no other
commercials.
Again, an insignificant price
to pay.
Hulu gives the illusion of
totality, but it is an illusion.
I don’t (for example) believe I
saw any episodes of “American
Idol,” though “1 vs. 100” is here.
What’s the logic for inclusion on
Hulu? I’m not sure it’s evident,
and I’m not sure I care either.
“Idol” isn’t going to be here, of
course, because Fox already has
a lucrative deal with iTunes.
So what. We can live with that.
And besides, YouTube and Idolstalker already have this show
covered thoroughly.
A quick note on screen quality: It’s generally adequate.
The actual video screen will
fill about a quarter of your’s,
and it’s surrounded by clutter
of various sorts, some of it distracting. Naturally, you’ll then
click on “full screen.” Under
normal circumstances, “full
screen” can be a ticket to online
hell, with either horrific quality or a frozen hard drive. Not
here: Full screen resolution is
pretty good, and I had no technical problems to speak of.
As mentioned, I’ll check back
later, but you should check it out
now. Hulu is amazing. I promise.

‘Stuff White People Like’ blog emerges as a Web sensation
Oscar parties, standing still
at concerts, marathons, David
Sedaris — these are all things
white people like, according to a
new Web site.
Since starting earlier this
year, Stuff White People Like
(http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.
wordpress.com) has drawn more
than 11 million hits and has fast
become an Internet sensation.
The blog was created by 29year-old Christian Lander, an
Internet copy writer living in
Los Angeles. Its sarcastic mission statement: “This is a scientific approach to highlight and
explain stuff white people like.
They are pretty predictable.”
With nearly daily updates,
the blog has worked up to 87 entries. A sampling includes white
people’s proclivity for modern
furniture, NPR and outdoor performance clothes.
White people have long been
the easy butt of jokes, but the appeal of Stuff White People Like
is not just in its observations, but
its general contention that those
who think they’re as unique as a
snowflake (and perhaps have the
same pigmentation) are really
engaging in groupthink.
The satire, obviously, isn’t
exactly aimed at all white people.
Most of the jokes are at the expense of either yuppies (Apple
products, coffee, modern furniture) or hipsters (indie rock, vegetarianism, Michel Gondry).
One entry declares: “The
number one reason why white
people like not having a TV is
so that they can tell you that
they don’t have a TV.”
On the recently concluded
HBO series “The Wire,” the
blog reads: “In white culture,
giving away information about
a film or TV series is considered as rude as spitting on your
mothers grave. It is an unforgivable offense.”
You might (fairly) say that
the world doesn’t need any
more stereotypes. But Stuff
White People Like wouldn’t
be the success that it is if it
weren’t astutely skewering
people who think they’re expressing their individuality or
hipness but are actually running with the pack.
Of course, it should come
as no surprise that irony also
is deemed “stuff white people
like.” Though the entry for irony lists things such as trucker
hats and white trash parties,
there’s no better example than
the blog, itself.
Among the stuff that white
people like is, well, “Stuff
White People Like.”
Jake Coyle writes for The Associated Press.

LA CENTER, Ky. — The
Ballard County Art Guild will
meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday
at the extension office, 110
Broadway.
Judy Poole will demonstrate how to paint daffodils
with watercolors. The challenge this month for artists
is to paint something that
depicts the March wind.
The meeting is affiliated
with Let’s Beautify La Center, Inc.
Information: Judy Webb,

TAMPA, Fla. — Billy Crystal better
stick to
his night
job.
The comedian,
actor and
Oscar
presenter
struck
out in
his new
Crystal
career as
a baseball player Thursday
— and promptly struck out
as the New York Yankees’
new leadoff man.
Swinging late against
Pittsburgh’s Paul Maholm,
Crystal bounced a chopper
past first baseman Adam
LaRoche that landed several
feet foul. Crystal got ahead
in the count 3-1, but then
swung over a pair of 88 mph
fastballs.
Crystal’s debut — and
finale — followed the likes
of Garth Brooks and Tom
Selleck, other celebrities
who played in spring training
games.
His only sign of nervousness: He chomped nonstop
on bubblegum.

AOL agrees to buy Bebo
Associated Press
NEW YORK — AOL stepped
up its bid to boost traffic and
advertising opportunities
worldwide as the struggling
Internet company agreed
Thursday to pay $850 million for
the online hangout Bebo and a
foothold in the growing arena of
social media.
Although Bebo remains in the
shadow of MySpace and Facebook, it is strong in some foreign
markets, including Britain. According to comScore Inc., its audience outside the United States
is engaged, spending more time
BY GLENN GARVIN
was much more modest.
“I just want to touch it,”
he said.
And that he did.

McClatchy-Tribune News Service
Yet another of life’s little
mysteries: the title of Fox’s
new sitcom, “The Return of
Jezebel James.”
Why not just call it what it
is, “The Return of The Odd
Couple Except with Lots of
Estrogen and Many Fewer
Laughs?”
Really: Indy film queen
Parker Posey plays a snobby,
obsessive-compulsive clean
freak who wants a baby but
can’t have one. Lauren Ambrose of “Six Feet Under” is
her sister, a slobby slacker barely one step removed from living
on the street — but with a perfectly functioning uterus.
Naturally they move in together so Ambrose can carry
Posey’s baby.
If that’s not Felix and a
knocked-up Oscar — I know, I
know, shoulda been the other
way around — then next you’ll
tell me that “Lipstick Jungle”
and “Cashmere Mafia” aren’t
the same show.
As for the lack of laughs,
you’re just going to have to take
my word for it, unless you want
to risk serious brain damage.
‘Beverly Hills, 90201’
gets modern update
It’s almost been a decade
since “Beverly Hills, 90210”
was on, but hey, it’s never
too late for a spinoff.
The CW is developing a
contemporary update of the
popular ‘90s teen soap with
possibly a bit of sass since
“Veronica Mars” creator Rob
Thomas is in talks to write
the project.
Plotwise, there’s not much
to tell yet, but the network
should be deciding whether
to order a pilot by month’s
end.
If this deal goes through, it
would bring Thomas back into
The CW fold after “Veronica
Mars” ended its three-season run last spring. He had
attempted a fourth season
of the show with a time jump,
setting the tiny sleuth in the
FBI Academy, but it didn’t fly.

CONTINUED FROM 1A
Amy Sherman-Palladino created “Gilmore
Girls,” starring Lauren
Graham and Alexis Bledel, which ran for a total
of seven seasons, first
on the WB, then the
CW.
“Jezebel James” is written and
produced by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of “Gilmore
Girls,” and her tendencies toward the fey and overmannered
have truly run amok here.
Posey’s brittle portrayal of
the older sister only worsens
matters. Her explanation of
why she doesn’t want to adopt
a child unrelated to her — “Because what if it grows up and
tries to kill me? I mean, I kind
of asked for it, right?” — left me
not chuckling but wondering
what kind of prospective mother refers to her baby as “it.” The
answer, I’m guessing, is a soonto-be-canceled one.

ed Cow, 527 N. 6th St.
At the first session last
weekend, the participants ranged from young children having
fun with their parents or grandparents, to big fifth-grade boys
letting down their hair to enjoy something a little different
and creative on a Saturday afternoon.
Grace Clemency, owner of The Stranded Cow, advises calling early for reservations for the session, which will have
limited seating. Each participant will decorate six hard-boiled
eggs, along with one blown egg to be kept. To register, phone
575-0020.
Class members also decorate a box during the class. And
the Easter grass in the boxes is purple, to match the purple
cow theme and decor of the restaurant.
On Monday, the restaurant will serve a special St. Patrick’s
Day Lunch of Irish Cows. Any guesses what those are?
Other March plans include an Easter Brunch on Sunday,
March 23. The menu will include baked ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, bread pudding and more.
Plans for The Stranded Cow include having more parties
and special activities for children — perhaps little girl’s tea
parties that stress etiquette and teach entertaining tips such
as creative ways to fold napkins. Even big people get confused
about which fork to use.
The Stranded Cow has a private room for small meetings,
and the restaurant will work on helping arrange functions.

The Lower Town clinic waiting room of
Dr. Christi Bonds isn’t like most doctor’s
offices.
Soothing music plays in the background as clients sip on herbal tea, browse
through art notions, gaze at sculptures of
Chinese statues and look at a large quilt
hanging in the center of the wall. Clients
also can munch on ginger candy and
herbal chocolate (30 calories each piece) to
soothe stress.
With a background in art, it’s not surprising that her office decor lacks the
clinical aspect. Bonds began as an artist
long before she decided to help people
heal. Beyond the waiting room and examination tables lies an art gallery filled with
black and white photographs, fiber arts,
and tile art.
Bonds calls her combination clinic/studio Integrative Medicine of Kentucky, 233
N. 7th St. The gallery is HeART of Healing
and includes art made by healers and for
healing. She opened the gallery on Feb. 8
during the Chinese New Year.
She began her career in art before
deciding to return to school for her medical degree. “I was an illustrator and did
album covers,” she said. “I got into fiber
arts and painting on fabric.”
Bonds moved to Paducah from Reno,
Nev., nine months ago, giving up a private
practice that combined traditional family
medicine with Eastern influences such
as acupuncture and Chinese cosmetology.

ert met Bonds in Reno at a quilt workshop.
Fallert had injured her neck and was in
pain during the class.
Bonds, a student in her class, told her
she could relieve the pain if Fallert had 45
spare minutes between class and dinner.
Fallert agreed, and Bonds performed acupuncture at her clinic.
“The muscles relaxed, and I was able to
function nicely,” Fallert recalled.
Fallert asked Bonds if she had considered moving to Paducah, and Bonds
replied that she was busy with her practice but might consider taking a look. A
year later at another conference, Fallert
bumped into Bonds again and asked if
she had thought more about moving to
Paducah.
Bonds again told her she might take
a look. The women began e-mailing and
eventually Bonds came to Paducah to look
at Lower Town. Bonds bought a home
and a clinic in Lower Town and moved to
Paducah nine months ago. “I agree, and I
love it here,” she said.
Bonds works as a physician at the
Paducah Veterans Affairs clinic during
the day and offers integrative medicine by
appointment and on Saturdays. Her gallery also is open by appointment and on
Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m.
Her current exhibit depicts 35-40 molas,
or intricate handmade thread art designs,
from the Kuma Indians of San Blas Islands, Panama. They make molas for their
traditional dress, but as tourists discovered the beauty of the pieces, they began
cutting the garments apart and selling
them. Quilters are among the target market because quilters can use the molas for
clothing or quilts.
The colorful molas on display through
April 19 depict scenes from the Old and
New Testament.
A black-and-white photography exhibit,
“A Study of Love,” showcases the work of
Paducah native Paul Mazzone and Eva Capozzola. The photographs show life at the
Duc Son Orphanage in Hue, Vietnam. The
show will pull at heartstrings because
Vietnamese children are shown living at
the orphanage. Had the children stayed
with their parents, they might have been
subjected to a life of poverty or sickness,
according to a handout distributed at the
exhibit.
Other exhibits include tile art, quilts,
wood carving and bone carvings.
But Bonds doesn’t just show art and
perform medicine. She also enjoys quilting and has several of her art quilts
displayed throughout the clinic and gallery. She prefers piecing and applique to
stitching on the sewing machine. “When
I do traditional quilting, it’s my mindless
quilting,” Bonds said.
