Geocent won the award for its recent work with the US Navy, specifically the Navy Meteorological Oceanographic Command (CNMOC), Navy Oceanographic Office (NAVO), and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Directorate. The Navy asked Geocent to help it adapt to new combat realities in the underwater theater, as foreign submarine technology throughout the world has rapidly increased to levels which threaten the Navy's superiority at sea. To counter emerging threats, Geocent developed a technology solution that helps the Navy disseminate existing environmental information. To the trained user, this information helps identify potential areas where enemy submarines would have an advantage over the Navy’s ability to detect them using SONAR. The result gives commanders regions which they can either avoid or actively search to contain the threat. The solution, called the Anti-Submarine Visual Analysis Tool (AVAT), uses open source servers and open layers mapping technology to produce a web based application capable of meeting the demands of handling this complex data. This solution reduces crew decision cycle times, generating a tactical advantage over an enemy -helping to ensure the security of the fleet and more importantly the safety of US sailors. According to Dr. Brandon Haynie, the lead functional expert on AVAT, "As the Navy moves toward a more net-centric service environment, issues have been identified by the growing needs to view four dimensional data being generated by the meteorological and oceanographic community. Mastery of this environment is critical to success of missions undertaken by the Navy". Dr. Bobby Savoie, President of Geocent, adds “We're proud and appreciative of the 'Innovator of the Year' recognition by New Orleans CityBusiness, we're proud to help our Navy, and we’re proud to be based in the Greater New Orleans region. We encourage other leading-edge companies that focus on innovation- and technologysolution services to establish themselves here, as well."
