in the
Tropical Rainforest
By Joel Wifler
Kinkajous
Kinkajous live in Central and South America,
where they spend a lot of their time in trees.
They are able to pivot their feet backwards and
forwards. This makes it easy for them to run in
different directions along branches and up and
down trees.
The Kinkajou also has a gripping tail that it uses
like another limb. The kinkajou hangs from their
tail which also aids in their balance. This tail also
serves as a blanket, while many of its features and
traits look like a chimp, they are actually more
related to the raccoon.
Bengal Tigers
Hunting and forest destruction have
reduced tiger populations from
hundreds of thousands of animals to
perhaps fewer than 2,500.
Bengal Tigers live in india and are sometimes
called indian tigers.Tigers are the largest member
of the cat family.
There were eight species at one time but three
became extinct.
Chimpanzees
Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, sharing
more than 98 percent of our genetic blueprint.
Chimpanzees live in social communities of several
dozen animals.
Although they normally walk on all fours, chimpanzees
can walk upright.
Chimps are generally fruit and plant eaters, but they
also eat insects,eggs,and meat.
Poison dart frog
Poison dart frogs, members of the Dendrobatidae
family, wear some of the most brilliant and beautiful
colors on Earth.
Their elaborate designs are deliberately ostentatious
to ward off predators.
Some species display unusual parenting
habits, including carrying both eggs and
tadpoles on their backs.
Green Anaconda
A member of the boa family, south america’s Green Anaconda
is the largest snake in the world.
Green anacondas can grow up to 29 feet.
Anacondas live in swamps,marshes,and slow
moving streams mainly in the amazon.
They eat wild pigs,deer,birds,turtles,and jaguars.
Facts about the Tropical Rainforest
by Mini Preston
Climate/Weather
In the Tropical Rainforest the average temp. is about 70-85 degrees fahrenheit. Most of the time the weather is humid
because of all of the rainfall. There is about 400 inches per year of rainfall. The climate is warmer in these areas because
the sun is closer to the equator.
Layers of the Tropical Rainforest
What Are Layers?
Layers are four groups that separate rainforests.
1.EMERGENT LAYER
2.CANOPY LAYER
3.UNDERSTORY LAYER
4.FOREST FLOOR
1.EMERGENT LAYER
The tallest trees are
the emergents,
towering as much as
200 feet above the
forest floor.
2.CANOPY LAYER
This is the primary
layer of the forest
and forms a roof
over the two
remaining layers.
3.UNDERSTORY LAYER
Little sunshine reaches this
area so the plants have to
grow larger leaves to reach
the sunlight.
4.FOREST FLOOR
Its very dark down here
almost no plants grow in this
area, as a result.
Fun Facts
1.The Tropical
Rainforest is an
ecosystem that
covers about 7%
of the Earth’s
surface.
2.Rainforests are
extremely
important because
the water it
produces
evaporates and then
is used as rain in
other areas.
3.The Tropical
Rainforest has
hundreds of
different trees
4.There are over
2,500 different
species of vines.
Some have a
thickness that
equals the
circumference
of a human
being.
5.Tropical
Rainforests are
one of the
oldest biomes
on Earth. There
are some that
have been
around since
dinosaurs
roamed the
Earth.
Tropical Rainforest Location
by Laila Mueller
Location
Tropical rainforests are located in various locations, for example the Amazon
Rainforest is a rainforest in the location of the Amazon Basin of South America.
More Locations
57% of the world’s rainforests are located in Latin America
1 third of the world’s rainforests are located in Brazil
25% of the world’s rainforests are located in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands
18% of the world’s rainforests are located in West Africa
Plants in the
Tropical Rainforest
By Lily Guindon
Bougainvillea
Jambu
Bengal Bamboo
Curare
Strangler Figs
Bougainvillea
The Bougainvillea lives in a very green habitat. It can reach over
30 feet tall! They can be a variety of colors such as pink, red,
orange, white, or yellow. The Bougainvillea’s root is very fragile,
so it doesn’t form a good, firm root ball.
Bengal Bamboo
The Bengal Bamboo often grows as an undergrowth, scattered or
in patches in the forest. It does very well in a moist environment
with a lot of rainfall. It likes temperatures between 40 degrees
fahrenheit to 100 degrees fahrenheit. It can grow between 40
to 80 feet tall!
Curare
The Curare can grow as large as a large liana, or vine found in the
canopy of the Southern African Rainforest. They are heart shaped
which may be 4 to 8 inches long and almost as wide, with a 2 to 6
inches long petiole. It is smooth on top and hairy white on the
bottom. Some people use the Cuare to make into a light syrup.
Jambu
Jumbu is a mildly sweet, crisp, watery fruit and it grows naturally
in India to Eastern Malaya. Jambu is a small tree or large shrub and
grows to an average height of 10 to 20 feet tall! It likes plenty of rain
evenly spaced throughout the year. They are pink when young, and
become yellowish-green beneath when mature. They bloom twice a
year,in July and September. They ripen in August and November.
Strangler Figs
Figs are one of the most important plant species of a rainforest ecosystem.
There is close to 1,000 different species of Ficus, which can be found
in any major rainforest. Hundreds of animals such as pigeons, parrots,
hornbills, toucans, monkeys, gibbons, and fruit eating bats feed on the
sweet fruit of the fig tree. They are considered a keystone. Several animals
depend on fruit as a major part of their diet.
