MANZANILLO AIRPORT TO CUIXMALA MAIN ENTRANCE

DESCRIPTION
For much of this quick and picturesque journey – once you’ve passed through the
town of Cihuatlan soon after leaving the airport – you’ll be traveling north in the direction of Puerto Vallarta through lightly populated rural and wilderness areas. Your drive
will take you past banana plantations and irrigated fields, through miles of coastal
forests and mountains, and past a handful of villages, with occasional stunning views
of the Pacific Ocean to our unmarked main entrance where you’ll be welcomed to the
silence and timeless beauty that is Cuixmala.

not all, are marked with signs that say “Topes.”

markers on the side of the road.

Exit airport, pass under “Bienvenido a Manzanillo” sign.

At highway interchange see sign for “Pto. Vallarta/Cihuatlan/Highway
200.” Continue under overpass. At stop sign make left to Cihuatlan/200.

Pass signs for Barra de Navidad/Highway 200. Cross bridge and just
as you enter the town of Cihuatlan bear left. Highway 200 becomes the one-way
commercial main street (Av. Alvaro Obregon) of Cihuatlan. Continue through town for
about a dozen blocks. At the end of the central commercial district the one-way
street widens out to a broad two-lane road, which is highway 200.
(On the return trip from Cuixmala to the Manzanillo Airport, once you
enter Cihuatlan, you will be directed around the main commercial street as you follow
the signs for Manzanillo while driving through town, you’ll find yourself back on highway 200 once you leave Cihuatlan. After Cihuatlan, just follow the signs for “Aeropuerto.”)

Pass Pemex service station on left. Continue on highway 200 toward
Pto. Vallarta and drive through the village of Melaque (at this point in the journey,
highway 200 and highway 80 share the same road, but the signs – if you see any –
only note that you’re on highway 80).

Where the road through Melaque ends, turn right in the direction of
Pto. Vallarta. The sign will say “Pto. Vallarta and Guadalajara/80.” This road is also
highway 200, but the sign does not say so. (Just remember that you’re heading in the
direction of “Pto. Vallarta.”)
Almost immediately after making the right, you’ll make your first left
where the road forks. The sign here says “Tomatlan/Pto. Vallarta/200.” If you miss
this turn, you’ll immediately pass a Pemex service station and you’ll be on highway 80
heading in the direction of Guadalajara. So if you pass a Pemex station, turn around
and take the first right turn onto highway 200 in the direction of Pto. Vallarta.

Pass a small sign indicating a left hand turnoff to the El Tamarindo
resort. Just past this sign you will see the ocean off to the left in the distance. Whenever there’s a choice, stay on the main road and follow the signs to Pto. Vallarta.

Cross “Puente (bridge) Cuiztmala”. After the Cuiztmala
bridge on the left side of the road is an ochre colored wall with a bright blue gate
which is the entrance to Cuixmala. Make a left off the highway and pull up to
the blue metal gate where you’ll be welcomed by a member of our uniformed
private security staff.

PUERTO VALLARTA AIRPORT TO CUIXMALA MAIN ENTRANCE

DESCRIPTION
Leaving behind the glittering towers and congestion of modern Puerto Vallarta you
will first pass briefly through Puerto Vallarta’s charming old city before emerging onto
a road that hugs the rugged coast, thick with glamorous skyscrapers and elegant
villas, to the end of Puerto Vallarta’s immense crescent bay.
Heading inland, you’ll follow a curving well-maintained two-lane highway up into and
through a cool, mountainous pine forest with views of peaks and valleys on all sides.
While roadside services are limited once you leave Puerto Vallarta, there is no shortage
of dramatic natural vistas to enjoy.

Soon you’ll emerge from the mountains and find yourself descending into an expansive valley, where modest towns and villages give way to vast farms and verdant riverbeds. Finally, you’ll arrive at our unmarked main entrance where you’ll be welcomed to
the silence and timeless beauty that is Cuixmala.

• There are three Pemex service stations on this route, but the first one doesn’t come
until one hour and forty-five minutes into the trip, so please plan accordingly.

When you begin your journey, check your odometer. You’ll need to
make an important left turn approximately 5 km after you leave the airport. Exit
airport and follow signs to Puerto Vallarta (not Tepic), which will take you onto the
service road of the four-lane limited access boulevard that parallels the coast and goes
through the modern resort area of the city.
When you are able to, enter the central part of the boulevard and move to the left lane
in preparation for making a soft left hand turn five kilometers after you leave the
airport.
You will see signs directing you to “Vallarta Centro,” Puerto Vallarta’s old city center.
Ignore them. That is not where you want to go.
As you approach the 5 km point on your odometer, look for a large Pemex service
station on your left. The only sign at the intersection where you turn left is a small
blue “WalMart” sign on the lamp post where you turn. At the center of the sign is a
white arrow pointing to the left.

Soft left turn at traffic signal where you see the “WalMart” sign onto Av.
Luis Donaldo Colosio (you will not see a street name sign at this turn).
If you pass a Mega Store supermarket on your right then you’ll know
you’ve missed the turn. The easiest place to turn around is at the huge Sheraton Hotel
just a bit farther on your right. Make a left turn as you exit the Sheraton Hotel into the
service lane of the main road you’ve just exited. Then at the first major intersection,
make a right to “Barra de Navidad” and highway 200. (If you need to ask for directions at any point, you are looking for highway 200 going south toward Barra de
Navidad and Manzanillo—or Carretera Número Doscientos in Spanish.)

Pass through second tunnel, which lets out onto the cobblestonepaved Venustiano Carranza, which is in the charming and bustling old city of Puerto
Vallarta. Four short blocks later, at the sign for “Barra de Navidad/200,” you’ll make a
left onto Insurgentes, which becomes the two-lane highway that will take you all the
way to Cuixmala.

For the next 30 minutes or so you’ll be on a winding road that follows the coast and is
bounded on both sides by high-rise apartment buildings and resorts, after which the
road turns inland along a riverbed and into the mountains.
(On the return trip from Cuixmala to the Puerto Vallarta airport, highway 200 will take you back into the old city of Puerto Vallarta and onto Insurgentes.
At the intersection with Basilio Badillo you’ll see a sign for “Tepic,” which is the direction you want. Make a right onto Basilio Badillo, which will take you into the first of the
two tunnels. Once you exit the second tunnel you’ll be on Av. Luis Donaldo Colosio for
a short way before bearing right as the road joins “Mexico 37 to Tepic.” This is the main
boulevard through Puerto Vallarta. From here, just follow the signs to the airport.)

Highway 200 leaves the mountains at km marker 147 and the landscape
opens out into a gorgeous valley where you’ll pass through a handful of towns. From
here it’s a relatively straight shot to Cuixmala.

Final km marker (50) before Cuixmala’s entrance (the next few km
markers are missing). You are now four kilometers from Cuixmala. After km marker
50, you’ll cross two bridges: Puente Arenoso II and then Puente Arenoso I.

Soon after Puente Arenoso, you will see an ochre colored wall with a
bright blue gate which is the entrance to Cuixmala. Drive up to the blue metal gate,
where you’ll be welcomed by a member of our uniformed private security staff.
