HOW YOUR WASTE IS RECYCLED
Your various Zero Waste Bags will be picked up as part of your standard Progressive Waste
Solutions curbside service (according to the pick-up schedule on page 4 of this catalogue) and
sent to a local sorting facility. Once sorted, the materials are sent to various TerraCycle® recycling
plants across North America to be processed.
The first step is the sorting process allowing the collected materials to be grouped together into
categories for recycling. This is why the higher separation Zero Waste Bags are more affordable
(refer to page 5). Sorting is completed through a variety of manual and automated material
separation steps. Waste streams composed of a single material are combined with other waste
made of the same material. More complex waste, which is made of numerous materials, is dealt
with separately. This complex waste is shredded and separated by an automated process which
combines the different categories of similar materials.
Once the waste is appropriately separated into the necessary material groupings it can be
processed separately in order to assure 100% of what is collected is recycled properly and
efficiently. This process differs depending on waste stream. For example, coated papers - like
coffee cups - will be hydro-pulped to separate out the wax and plastic coatings and the paper
fibers. From there the wax and plastic are recycled into new plastic applications and the fibers
can be recycled into new paper products or composted.
Collected metals are smelted for the steel-making process. Flexible and rigid plastics are
extruded, pelletized and can be molded into a variety of new plastic products. Other waste
streams, including those made from glass and rubber polymers are recycled separately with
unique processes appropriate for those materials.
