The internet’s exponential growth throughout the recent years, aided by
advancements in communication tools augmented the learning process in many
ways. Web-based E-learning systems were found to be the most suitable fit to
deliver information, education, and learning without any time or place boundaries.
E-learning opens up new horizons in the higher education field, as it allows institutes
to provide a more flexible and cost effective learning methods. There have been a
lot of research and studies conducted on E-learning and its potential; however, few
have studied instructors as a determinant factor in the success of its
implementation. Even though, e-learning systems are considered as essential
corporate investment, several surveys show high rate of implementation failure, as
well as many universities have not been successful in their adoption of e-learning
systems. Thus, investigating factors determining e-learning systems acceptance and
success is of utmost importance. As a result, this paper attempts to fill this gap in
the current body of literature by identifying critical success factors that have the
most significant influence on instructors’ acceptance of web-based e-learning
systems in higher educational context. The aforementioned factors have a relation
or influenced by: the instructor, the organization, the society, and technology. The
objective of this paper is to develop a theoretical framework for evaluating
instructors’ acceptance factors of web-based e-learning systems success.

Kajian ini untuk menilai kerelevanan kaedah Model Ruang Vektor (VSM) untuk
diaplikasikan ke dalam Sistem Soal-Jawab Ibadah Saie. Reka bentuk model kajian,
menggunakan teknik beg perkataan (BOW), soalan faktoid jenis WH dan VSM iaitu
pemberat perkataan dan persamaan kosinus. Kejituan dan Dapatan digunakan bagi
mendapatkan penilaian ketepatan pemangkatan capaian jawapan. Hasil
pemangkatan dokumen daripada Ujian Tertutup (set latihan) dan Ujian Terbuka (set
ujian) menunjukkan pendekatan VSM boleh diaplikasikan ke dalam sistem tersebut.

SUCCESSFUL INTELLIGENCE AMONG ENGINEERING STUDENTS AND ITS
RELATIONSHIP WITH ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

The aim of this study was to explore the association between successful intelligence
comprising analytical, creative and practical intelligence, and academic achievement
of engineering students based on a group of 120 Merlimau Polytechnic engineering
students using the Malay translation of the Sternberg Triarchic Abilities Test
(reliability, =.84) to test successful intelligence. The results of the data analysis
indicate that analytical intelligence is the dominant intelligence among engineering
students. Successful intelligence is also found to be positively correlated with
academic achievement. However, only the practical intelligence component is
statistically significantly correlated with academic achievement. There is also no
statistically significant gender difference found on any of the components of
successful intelligence based on data in this study. Conclusion: Although the
analytical intelligence component of successful intelligence is more dominant
among engineering students, practical intelligence is a better predictor of their
academic success in engineering.

THE INFLUENCE OF SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF
COCONUT FIBER-POLYESTER COMPOSITES FROM RECYCLED
POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE

Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) based on the glycolyzed poly(ethylene
terephthalate) (PET) with ethylene glycol was prepared through glycolysis process
and was used as a matrix for the preparation of UPR/coconut fiber (CF) composites.
The oligomer obtained was analyzed according to their molecular weight. To
improve the adhesion between coconut fiber and polyester resin, surface treatment
on coconut fiber with sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH) and silane coupling agent
were used. The effect of fiber surface treatment on mechanical properties of
coconut fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester composites were determined by
using tensile and impact test. The experimental results showed that treated coconut
fibers have higher values of tensile strength and impact strength compared to
untreated coconut fiber. Silane treatment on alkalized coconut fiber shows the
highest improvement of tensile strength followed by alkali treated fiber with the
increase in tensile strength by 41% and 34% respectively. From SEM observations,
better adhesion was observed for the coconut fiber/unsaturated polyester
composites in the presence of silane coupling agent on the alkalized fiber.

PREPARATION OF ENR/PVC/RH COMPOSITE MEMBRANE FOR WATER

Composite membrane from Epoxidized Natural Rubber/ Polyvinyl Chloride/ Rice
Husk (ENR/PVC/RH) called porous membrane was developed via phase inversion
method to be used for water permeation application. The objectives of the study
were to investigate the effects of addition of RH on thermal stability, mechanical
properties pores development, morphology, water absorption, and water
permeation of membrane. The thermogravimetric curve of ENR/PVC membrane
was characterized by two peaks that correspond to thermal degradation of PVC at
250-300 °C and ENR/PVC at 250-500 °C. Thermal stability of the membranes
improved with the addition of RH and the residual mass of ENR/PVC membrane
increased with RH loadings. However, increasing RH loadings in ENR/PVC blends
resulted in the reduction of tensile strength due to the presence of pores and fillers
in the membranes. On the other hand, tensile modulus of the ENR/PVC/RH
membranes increased with the incorporation of RH. SEM images showed that the
ENR/PVC membrane with 5 wt% and 10 wt% of RH had pores on the surface which
consequently enhances the water absorption, flux and permeability of the
membranes. Hence, RH was capable improving thermal stability, mechanical
properties, morphology and performance of the ENR/PVC membranes and potential
for utilization in water separation process.

FABRICATION OF ZNS: NI2+ NANOCRYSTALS BY REVERSE MICELLE METHOD

The synthesis of Zn1-xNixS with x =0.00,0.02,0.04,0.06,0.08 and 0.10 nanoparticles by
reverse micelle method using sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) as
surfactant was done in this study. The effects of ion doping on the optical
characterization, structure and morphology of ZnS:Ni2+ were investigated using
ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier
transform infrared (FT-IR). The particle size of all of samples ranged from 2 nm to 3
nm, as calculated by the Debye–Scherrer formula and Brus equation. FT-IR results
confirmed the incorporation of ion dopants into ZnS crystal structure, and XRD
results showed that ZnS:Ni2+ nanoparticles crystallized in a zinc blende structure
without any impurity. Bandgap energy values ranged from 3.9 eV to 4.7 eV. Ion
doping shifted the absorption edge to lower wavelengths, as shown in the obtained
UV-vis spectra of samples. This blue shift is attributed to the quantum confinement
effect.

PRODUCTION OF MANDARIN TONES BY NON-NATIVE LANGUAGE
LEARNERS

This study examined how non-native language learners of Mandarin language
produced the four conventional Mandarin tones. Speech samples were collected
from 13 volunteer participants reading a list of 11 disyllabic Mandarin words. Based
on the audio recording and pitch curves created with the acoustic software Praat,
the tones produced by the participants were analyzed and tabulated to explore the
accuracy of the tones produced. Participants’ perceptions on the most difficult
Mandarin tones were explored through a structured interview conducted after the
recording. Based on the analysis of the oral data, this study confirmed the difficulty
of Tone 3 production among the learners. The fact that Tone 3 was perceived by the
participants as the most difficult Mandarin tone, has further consolidated the
finding from the oral data. It is interesting though to note that Tone 2 and Tone 4
were produced the most among the four tones, owing to the fact that these are the
most familiar tones for the participants as they bear strong similarities with the
sounds in their first language. As such, the results signify the effect of L1
interference. The fact that these participants are speakers whose native language is
non-tonal might have contributed to their lack of sensitivity to tonal categories in
Mandarin language.

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a term used to describe a disorder usually caused by brain
damage occurring at or before birth and marked by muscular impairment. Often
accompanied by poor coordination, it sometimes involves speech and learning
difficulties. The objective of this research is to determine the suitable design for
developing the Cerebral Palsy Child seat and to evaluate the product safety due to
limited special equipments or aids for CP children in Malaysia. They need an
appropriate seating equipment, to provide an optimal seated position to improve
their functional activities. CP Seat is one of the assistive devices that help the CP
child sit in a correct posture or position. The development of CP Child seat is based
on the Universal Corner Chair at OT clinic, UKM, KL as a guideline. Data are collected
using survey, observation and measurement of anthropometry data. From this
study, it can be concluded that Cerebral Palsy Child Seats have been successfully
developed based on doctor, therapist, clinician and parents’ requirement but the
safety aspect need to be improved as recommended by Forest Research Institute of
Malaysia (FRIM).

REKABENTUK “SMART PUMP KITS” BAGI MOTOSIKAL

Penghasilan reka bentuk baru menjadi satu keperluan kepada manusia pada zaman
ini. ‘Smart Pump’ yang di rekabentuk khusus untuk motosikal ketika berlakunya
sesuatu kerosakan pada tayar. Ia merupakan suatu idea rekabentuk dan inovasi
dalam memudahkan pengguna melakukan pembaikan tayar motosikal jika
berlakunya kerosakan di tengah jalan. Pengguna masa kini mengalami kesukaran
untuk melakukan kerja-kerja penukaran tiub kerana tiada kepakaran dalam bidang
penukaran tayar kerana ia memerlukan kemahiran serta peralatan yang tertentu
dan pam untuk memasukkan angin ke dalam tayar kerana ia sukar didapati di waktuwaktu kecemasan. Pam sedia ada menggunakan kaki atau tangan dan ini akan
member kesukaran kepada wanita atau orang tua untuk melakukannya. Kajian yang
dibuat adalah berdasarkan kepada kekerapan penunggang motosikal mengalami
kebocoran tayar motosikal sepanjang perjalanan ke destinasi masing-masing.
Kesukaran semakin bertambah jika kejadian yang berlaku adalah di kawasan yang
jauh daripada bengkel. Para penunggang pada kebiasaannya perlu menolak
motosikal masing-masing sehingga beberapa kilometer sebelum sampai ke bengkel
yang terdekat. Dengan terhasilnya projek ini, ia dapat membantu pengguna
motosikal jika berlaku masalah kebocoran tayar terutamanya tayar jenis tanpa tiub
memperbaiki kebocoran pada tayar dengan sendiri tanpa perlu membawa
motosikal masing-masing ke bengkel-bengkel yang berdekatan.

GENERATION Y’S EXPECTATIONS OF WORKING LIFE

Generation Y has the characteristics of their generational cohort which makes them
different from the present generation holding the upper management positions in
the workplace. This study examined the polytechnic students’ expectations of
working life. The specific aspects focused on are: (1) the extent to which their
expectations of working life resemble known characteristics of Generation Y; and (2)
whether the polytechnic students with work experience differ in their expectations
compared to those without work experience. The analysis of data from 147
polytechnic students showed that 62.6% of them have some work experience while
37.4% of them have not worked before. The polytechnic students exhibited some
characteristics of Generation Y as identified by the researchers. They expect their
employers to guide them in their new job and provide affirmative feedback on their
work. They also expect to engage in more group work than individual work.
However, they have not given much thought to whether they would make sacrifices
to meet project deadlines or whether they would be leading or participating as
followers in their new workplace. The findings suggest that the employers of
Generation Y may have to accommodate to the expectations of their Generation Y
employees, rather than expecting them to fit into the old ways of working.

ORAL COMMUNICATION SELF-EFFICACY BELIEFS AMONG STUDENTS OF

This study attempted to explore the oral communication self-efficacy beliefs of
senior students at Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. 246 engineering
students and 146 non-engineering students were chosen for the study. Quantitative
data were collected through questionnaires measuring oral communication selfefficacy beliefs on aptitude, attitude and aspiration. The data collected were
analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings indicated that the
students had high self-efficacy beliefs in their aptitude, attitude and aspiration
towards their communication skills. The highest self-efficacy beliefs identified was
aspiration, followed by attitude and aspiration. Engineering students showed higher
self-efficacy beliefs compared to their non-engineering counterparts. Findings also
indicated that there were significant differences between engineering and nonengineering students in their aptitude and attitude regarding their communication
efficacy beliefs. There was also a significant and positive relationship among the
three oral communication self-efficacy constructs. Further research should be
extended to investigating factors that contribute towards oral communication selfefficacy beliefs.

Modul Interaktif Fiber Optic Communication System merupakan medium
pembelajaran efektif yang boleh menarik minat dan memudahkan pelajar untuk
lebih memahami konsep dan kaedah yang digunakan dalam kursus Fiber Optic
Communication System. Tujuan modul ini dibangunkan adalah merupakan salah
satu usaha meningkatkan kualtiti proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang sedia
ada serta boleh membantu pelajar dalam melakukan ulangkaji secara santai.
Interaktif multimedia yang digunakan pakai adalah bersesuaian dengan
perkembangan teknologi pendidikan negara. Gabungan di antara modul
pembelajaran dan video interaktif dilihat bakal memberi impak yang lebih positif
terhadap proses pembelajaran. Bagi memudahkan dan menepati criteria
pembangunan modul pembelajaran interaktif ini, maka penyelidik telah memilih
Model Hanaffin dan Peck yang mengguna pakai tiga fasa utama iaitu fasa analisis,
fasa rekabentuk dan fasa perlaksanaan. Perisian yang digunakan untuk
menghasilkan modul interaktif adalah Sothink SWF Easy, manakala Video Maker
adalah perisian untuk menghasilkan video bagi menyokong modul yang
dibangunkan. Walaupun modul interaktif ini bukan merupakan rujukan lengkap
untuk kursus Fiber Optic Communication System namun diharapkan ia dapat
membantu memudahkan proses penyampaian pengajaran dan pembelajaran
kepada pelajar.

PERBANDINGAN PRESTASI ANTARA PELAJAR LATIHAN INDUSTRI
SEMESTER AKHIR DENGAN SEMESTER EMPAT DARI PERSEPSI INDUSTRI

Lulus kursus latihan industri merupakan salah satu syarat yang diwajibkan ke atas
setiap pelajar Politeknik Malaysia sebelum layak dipertimbangkan untuk
penganugerahan diploma. Para pelajar akan ditempatkan di industri selama 20
minggu untuk mencapai beberapa objektif pembelajaran. Maka dengan itu,
mengetahui kehendak industri terhadap pelajar latihan industri adalah amat
penting agar pihak politeknik dapat membekalkan pelajar yang memenuhi
keperluan industri. Pada masa ini, Politeknik Malaysia menggunakan 2 sistem
latihan industri iaitu Latihan Industri Semester Empat (LISE) dan Latihan Industri
Semester Akhir (LISA). Kajian ini dijalankan untuk membandingkan pelajar LISE dan
LISA dari segi kemahiran dan disiplin diri dari perspektif industri agar dapat
mengetahui kehendak mereka. Di samping itu, menerusi keputusan analisis data
juga kita boleh mengetahui kecenderungan industri dalam pengambilan pelajar
latihan industri. Oleh itu, keputusan kajian ini diharapkan dapat membantu Jabatan
Pendidikan Politeknik merancang kurikulum yang dapat memenuhi kehendak
industry seterusnya meningkatkan kualiti pelajar politeknik. 50 borang soalselidik
diedarkan kepada industri yang berpengalaman dalam pengambilan pelajar latihan
industri dari kedua-dua semester yang dinyatakan. Data yang diperolehi dianalisa
menggunakan SPSS 20. Hasil analisis mendapati pelajar dari sistem LISA
memperolehi capaian min yang lebih tinggi dari pelajar LISE dalam ke dua-dua
criteria kemahiran dan disiplin yang diuji. Tambahan pula, terdapat 39 responden
dari 50 responden lebih cenderung mengambil pelajar LISA berbanding pelajar LISE.
Secara kesimpulannya, pihak industri berpendapat pelajar dari semester akhir
mempunyai kemahiran dan disiplin yang lebih tinggi berbanding pelajar LISE.

RAIN FADE MITIGATION USING FREQUENCY DIVERSITY TECHNIQUE

The radio waves propagating through the earth atmosphere is attenuated due to
the presence of atmosphere particles, such as water vapor, water drops and the ice
particles. The atmospheric gases and rain both absorb and scatter the radio waves,
and consequently degrade the performance of the microwave link. Rain is a major
source of attenuation for microwave propagation above 7 GHz. In tropical and
equatorial regions, the rain intensity is higher and designing terrestrial and earthto-satellite microwave links are very critical and challenging for high frequencies.
This paper presents the summary of rain effects studies for lower operating
frequency such as C band compare to higher operating frequency such as Ka band
in tropical environment. The main objective is to justify the findings on the effect of
rain at lower and higher operating frequency in microwave link and solution to
overcome it by implementing Switching Circuit as Fade Mitigation Technique (FMT).
An experimental test bed has been set up for 5.8 GHz and 26 GHz terrestrial point
to point data communication link. The received signal strength (RSS) data and rain
fall intensity data were recorded for 24 hours daily over a period of 12 months (Jan
2013 – Dec 2013) at 1 minute interval. The collected rain rate data has been analyzed
with some prediction models. The main outcome of the research shows that there
is negligible effect of rain for 5.8 GHz link whereas it very strong on the 26 GHz link.
It was observed that there is a 15 dB to 35 dB attenuation during measurement
period. The FMT is used in this research for dual frequency by shifting the operating
frequency to lower band (5.8 GHz) while heavy rain and shifting back to normal
position at higher operating frequency (26 GHz) using the threshold level as
reference seems to be one of the solutions in the future. These findings will be
useful resources of information for researchers or telecommunication engineers.

Kajian ini bertujuan menentukan tahap kemahiran employability pelajar
kejuruteraan di politeknik dari perspektif pelajar. Kajian kes ini menggunakan
pendekatan kualitatif. Untuk mengumpul data, satu set protocol temubual telah
dibina berdasarkan objektif kajian dan tinjauan literatur. Sebanyak sepuluh elemen
kemahiran employability yang telah ditemubual antaranya kemahiran komunikasi,
kerja berpasukan, kepimpinan, etika dan moral,kerohanian, pembelajaran
sepanjang hayat dan pengurusan maklumat, pemikiran kritikal dan penyelesaian
masalah, menggunakan teknologi, keusahawanan dan kemahiran sosial. Seramai 11
orang pelajar semester akhir yang mengikuti program kejuruteraan awam, elektrik
dan mekanikal di empat buah politeknik telah dipilih berdasarkan criteria yang
telah ditetapkan.Secara keseluruhannya kemahiran employability pelajar

SERVICE QUALITY OF POLYTECHNIC USING SERVQUAL MODEL FOR
SUSTAINABLE TVET SYSTEM

Agreat emphasis on improving the quality of service will increase awareness as well
as improving the perception of TVET system in polytechnics as well as to achieve
the transformation plan. It will also lead to the sustainability of TVET system in the
country. Hence, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the service quality of
Politeknik Ungku Omar. The statistical population consists of final semester students
of Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) and 222 students were chosen through random
sampling method as the sample of the study. The data were collected using the
SERVQUAL standardized questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.
The findings of the study showed a significant difference between the students'
expectations and perceptions in all five dimensions of service quality and in all
dimensions, students’ expectations had a higher level of score than students’
perceptions. Moreover, results of multiple regression indicated that the relationship
between the four predictor variables and the criterion variable was at significant
level p <0.05. This value showed that the 82.6% contribution of the four constructs
(tangibility, reliability, assurance, empathy) on students’ satisfaction were
significant. One the other hand, one predictors variable namely responsiveness was
insignificantly correlated.

CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (CQI): STUDENTS’ SATISFACTION IN

The aim of this study is to dentify the students’ level of satisfaction based on the
facilities provided in polytechnic. Simple random sampling was chosen and data
were collected using questionnaires and data were analyzed using Statistical
Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS ) V21. Results showed that students were
satisfied with the infrastructure provided by polytechnic such as teaching and
learning facilities, library facilities, student affairs and administration facilities.
However, improvement of facilities like sports equipment and cafeteria/canteen
need to be improved. A few continuous quality improvement (CQI) measure need
to be undertaken so that the existing teaching and learning environment can be
improved. These efforts are important in order to fulfill one of the Polytechnic
transformation objectives where it is targeted that 50% of ‘Sijil Pelajaran Menengah’
(SPM) leavers who are qualified would choose Polytechnic as first choice institution
to further their studies.

BLENDED LEARNING: IMPLEMENTATION OF ONLINE ASSESSMENT

Blended learning initiative has been implemented in all Malaysian polytechnics and
is mainly influenced by high amount of hands-on or practical requirements. In
response to this initiative, CIDOS has been introduced to facilitate lecturers to
upload their teaching modules, supplementary resources and also to conduct
assessments online. There has been some pressure on the lecturers of Malaysian
Polytechnics to utilize CIDOS as part of their key performance indicator. This
particular research aimed to study the perceptions of students on online
assessmentsA total of 69 students participated in the survey which is qualitative in
nature, whereby students were required to express their emotions on the benefits
and limitations of online assessments. The benefits of online assessment were
classified into 4 general elements i.e. time management, technology usage, easy
access to information and comfortability of doing the assessment. On the other
hand, the limitations of online assessment as perceived by students were classified
into 3 general elements i.e. time management, internet or technology problems and
reliability of the assessment. All students expressed their preference towards online
assessment over in-classroom assessment. The implementation of blended learning
in Malaysian Polytechnics has put some pressure on the lecturers particularly in the
utilization of CIDOS as a platform to upload teaching and learning materials as well
as conducting assessments online. Online assessments may not be favoured by
lecturers due to their skepticism towards the reliability of such assessments. Among
the challenges in implementation of online assessment are inadequate facilities,
expertise in IT, lack of awareness and attitude as well as support from management.
Although online assessment may be perceived as time consuming and poorly
managed due to limited access to internet by students, students perceived online
assessment as beneficial in their learning endevour especially in providing comfort
during assessment and facilitating peer discussion.

In order to meet the requirement of Malaysian Polytechnic Education for the course
of Visual Basic Programming (EC502), a technique of simple steps is introduced for
developing Visual Basic programming codes that interfaces with hardware and other
software. The curriculum for Diploma of Electrical Engineering courses for Malaysian
Polytechnics encourages the use of computer in controlling hardware for the
applications. The method of the research is implemented based on the syllabus for
Project 1 (EE501) and Project 2 (EE601); allows students to develop projects under
three categories; hardware, software or combination of hardware and software. In
order to accomplish the task of interfacing the hardware, software and also enable
data usage; Visual Basic 2010 programming language is selected with RS232
standard. It will be used for serial communication and Microsoft Excel for the data
storage. A set of procedures is designed, which will guide students and lecturers
with minimal knowledge in programming and serial communication operations by
designing basic projects that involve hardware interface with Visual Basic program
and some data manipulations.

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenalpasti outcome dan impak program kemahiran
yang dilaksanakan di Kolej Komuniti di Malaysia. Ia melibatkan kajian keatas peserta
kursus pendek dan kursus sepenuh masa yang mengikuti latihan kemahiran dalam
pelbagai bidang. Rekabentuk kajian ini berasaskan gabungan antara kaedah
kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Kajian berbentuk kuantitatif dengan mengaplikasikan
tinjauan keratan rentas berdasarkan soalselidik yang dijawab oleh responden.
Sementara kaedah kualitatif melibatkan penelitian ke atas model-model dan kajian
lepas (desk research) terhadap kursus-kursus yang melibatkan literasi dan aspekaspek kemahiran. Persempelan kelompok digunakan dengan respoden dipilih secara
rawak yang terdiri dari zon utara,zon tengah,zon timur dan zon selatan. Soal selidik
digunakan bagi mendapatkan maklumat kuantitatif, yang mengandungi empat
bahagian ia terdiri dari demografi responden, sikap terhadap kursus-kursus
kemahiran,keyakinan diri dan kualiti perkhidmatan di Kolej Komuniti. Analisa
kualitatif menumpukan kepada kajian literatur yang memberi tumpuan kepada
maklumat melalui indek di internet, jurnal-jurnal dan buku-buku. Bagi kaedah
kuantitatif, soal selidik dianalisa dengan menggunakan analisis statistik SPSS versi
14. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan kecenderungan dalam kalangan peserta kursus
kemahiran mengikuti lebih dari
satu kursus di Kolej Komuniti adalah
membanggakan. Ini boleh disimpulkan bahawa kedudukan Kolej Komuniti dalam
kalangan masyarakat adalah baik. Penilaian responden terhadap Kolej Komuniti juga
menunjukkan ianya bersifat positif. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa kursuskursus yang ditawarkan kepada masyarakat setempat mendapat sambutan, oleh itu
peruntukan bagi pengajian dan pembelajaran sepanjang hayat untuk rakyat
khususnya masyarakat setempat perlu dilihat semula oleh pihak kerajaan.

WHAT CAUSES STRESS IN MALAYSIAN STUDENTS AND IT EFFECT ON
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: A CASE REVISITED

This research aims to examine and identify the stress factor and level of
undergraduate and postgraduate students at Local University that affect their
academic performance. Current study proposes a hypothesis that there is a
relationship between stress and academic performance. A total of 100 participants
were recruited in this study using a random sampling. Participants were asked to fill
a questionnaire regarding their stress experience and their GPA score. The data then
analyzed using a Factor analysis to identify the components of stress. This study
explores different types of stress that contributes to participant’s academic
performance from self, environment, and future and parent expectation. All the
Environment factor, self-efficacy factor and future/parent expectation show a
significant and reliable score of 0.67-0.77 above the acceptable level. A multiple
regression was performed to test their effect on the academic score. The
Environment and future/parent expectation are found to be significantly affecting
their score. However, self efficacy factor is found to be not significant. These results
show that external factor motivate students to study more than the self motivation.
This study gives a current state-of-the-art and includes descriptive information that
can be used for future research.

Kepesatan pembangunan dan peningkatan kadar penduduk di Malaysia
menyebabkan berlakunya
peningkatan sampah sarap domestik. Salah satu
langkah untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut adalah melalui program kitar semula.
Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenalpasti komposisi sisa pepejal yang boleh dikitar
semula seperti botol plastik dan tin aluminium dan mengenalpasti kesedaran pelajar
terhadap program kitar semula. Kajian telah dijalankan di tiga lokasi iaitu di Jabatan
Kejuruteraan Awam, kamsis dan medan selera. Dapatan kajian mendapati botol
plastik merupakan bahan tertinggi yang dijana di ketiga-tiga lokasi. Berat botol
plastik yang dijana selama 7 minggu adalah 56298 gm manakala berat tin minuman
adalah 13335 gm. Dapatan kajian dari pemerhatian juga menunjukkan bahawa
pelajar kurang kesedaran tentang kepentingan program kitar semula. Dapatan
kajian ini diharap dapat meningkatkan keberkesanan program kitar semula di
politeknik.

Projek merupakan satu kursus yang wajib diikuti oleh semua pelajar dalam sistem
pengajian politeknik bagi melayakkan mereka dianugerahkan Diploma. Kursus
Projek perlu dilaksanakan dalam dua semester iaitu semester 5 (EE501) dan
semester 6 (EE601). Kaedah pembikinan atau persediaan projek dilakukan dalam
Semester 5 sementara semester 6 pula menekankan kepada penghasilan projek
sebenar. Kursus ini memfokuskan kepada penghasilan tiga kategori projek iaitu
perkakasan (hardware), perisian (software) dan gabungan perkakasan dan perisian.
Proses penghasilan projek merangkumi cadangan, perancangan, perolehan bahan,
pembinaan, pengujian, membaik pulih dan menghasilkan satu projek yang
diusahakan selama dua semester. Pada akhir semester 6, setiap pelajar perlu
membuat pembentangan projek yang telah dihasilkan dan menyediakan laporan
berformat. Kursus Projek ini juga dilihat sebagai satu platform bagi melatih sikap
kendiri pelajar dan usaha bijak menggunakan ilmu dalam menyelesaikan masalah.
Kajian ini dilakukan bagi mengenal pasti tahap kesediaan pelajar dari segi kognitif,
psikomotor, afektif dan kos. Satu instrumen soal selidik yang mengandungi 40
soalan telah diedarkan kepada 45 orang pelajar semester 5 sebagai responden. Data
yang diperolehi dari responden dianalisis mengggunakan SPSS. Secara keseluruhan,
analisis dapatan menunjukkan pelajar semester 5 di Jabatan Kejuruteraan Elektrik
POLISAS bersedia dari segi kognitif, psikomotor, afektif dan kos dengan kekuatan
min adalah 3.89, iaitu berada dalam skala baik. Hasil kajian ini dapat membantu
penyelia mengenal pasti kesukaran yang dihadapi oleh pelajar dan dapat
membimbing mereka menyiapkan projek dengan lebih cemerlang dan berkualiti.

Every student who wants to learn the science of engineering technologies needs
tools to better understand the subject. Studies using new technologies such as LED
TV definitely need teaching aids for the students who have never seen the internal
circuits. The teaching aids have been developed using actual LED TV and a main
circuit which were removed from the TV. LED TV is equipped with a point trainer to
check the selected voltage and switches that damage the device. The main purpose
of trainer LED TV is to increase the understanding of students in electronic
equipment repair technique using the latest technology. Worksheets for laboratory
testing were produced to facilitate students to understand basic principles of LED
TV trainer, to apply the measurement tools to test the functionality of LED TV trainer
and to apply this technique to troubleshoot fault diagnosis in LED TV trainer. Trainer
LED development is also seen as cost-effective trainer used in the R & D process that
can last longer. The LED TV Trainer also can help lecturers to manage the students’
practical activities and save maintenance cost of TV main board.

Graduan institusi pengajian tinggi perlu mempunyai kemahiran insaniah yang tinggi
bagi memenuhi kehendak dan keperluan industri yang bakal mereka sertai.
Kemahiran insaniah memainkan peranan yang penting dalam membentuk
kemahiran kendiri graduan sebagai persediaan menghadapi dunia pekerjaan. Salah
satu inisiatif Politeknik METrO Johor Bahru (PMJB) ke arah transformasi kemahiran
insaniah bakal graduan politeknik adalah dengan memperkenalkan program iSMART. Kajian yang dijalankan ini adalah bagi mengetahui tahap kesediaan
kemahiran insaniah dalam kalangan pelajar politeknik, mengenal pasti perbezaan
tahap kesediaan kemahiran insaniah berdasarkan demografi jantina dan faktor
pencapaian akademik. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah kuantitif. Soal selidik
diedarkan kepada 150 orang responden yang dipilih secara rawak sebagai kaedah
pengumpulan data. Hipotesis kajian ialah pelajar yang telah mengikuti program iSMART mempunyai kemahiran insaniah yang cukup sepertimana yang diperlukan
oleh industri setelah bergraduasi dan program i-SMART dapat membantu
kebolehdapatan kerja graduan politeknik.

Pendidikan kemahiran keusahawanan dalam kalangan pelajar institusi pengajian
tinggi khususnya pelajar politeknik adalah penting untuk menjadikan mereka lebih
kompetitif pada masa hadapan. Sejajar dengan itu Politeknik METrO Johor Bahru
(PMJB) telah membangunkan satu program yang dikenali sebagai Program i-SMART
untuk meningkatkan keterampilan dan keunggulan kemahiran insaniah pelajar
khususnya kemahiran keusahawanan selepas tamat pengajian. Kajian ini mengkaji
sejauh mana program ini mampu meningkatkan nilai-nilai keusahawanan dalam
kalangan pelajar. Seramai 181 orang pelajar (PMJB) telah dipilih secara rawak
sebagai responden kajian. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan nilai-nilai keusahawanan
pelajar adalah tinggi selepas mereka mengikuti program i-SMART. Terdapat
hubungan yang positif di antara penglibatan pelajar dalam Program i-SMART dengan
nilai-nilai keusahawanan. Dapatan juga menunjukkan nilai-nilai keusahawanan
sebenarnya tidak boleh diwarisi dan tidak dipengaruhi oleh faktor latar belakang
keluarga. Nilai-nilai keusahawanan boleh dibentuk dan bergantung kepada
kombinasi pengalaman dan pengetahuan yang diperolehi oleh pelajar itu sendiri.

MUSLIM BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The Islamic principles of vicegerency (khalifah) and brotherhood (ukhuwwah) are
seen as closely connected to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Thus, the
purpose of this study is to examine if the presence of Muslim directors is positively
related to CSR reporting. A total of 296 firms listed on Bursa Malaysia in the year
2010 are selected for this study. CSR is measured by the number of sentences, while
the presence of Muslim directors is identified by three measurements: (1) the
proportion of Muslim directors over total directors; (2) Muslim Chairman; and (3)
Muslim CEO. The results reveal that all measures indicate positive and significant
relationship with CSR reporting, thus, justifying the importance of Islam in shaping
CSR engagement among corporate firms.

Many job candidates often face a lot of anxiety when handling a job interview due
to lack of confidence and preparation, resulting in poor performance during an
interview. To improve overall performance in job interviews, a self-learning kit Dare
to be Interviewed was developed to engage students in self-learning and selfpractice. To find out the impact of the learning kit in boosting students’ confidence
and performance, an action research was carried out with a group of Diploma in
Business Management students of the Seberang Perai Polytechnic. Results indicated
an increase in students’ level of confidence and overall performance with the use of
the self-learning kit .This signifies the impact of self-learning in increasing motivation
and confidence that help job seekers to ace an interview.

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of transformational leadership
style on subordinates’ trust using 300 questionnaires responded by the employees
(support staff group) of local authorities (LAs) located in the central region of
peninsular Malaysia. The measurement scale employed in this study has met the
acceptable levels of validity and reliability tests of the study. However, performing
confirmatory factor analysis based on structural equation modeling (SEM) has
remained some items of single component of transformational leadership style.
Thus, transformational leadership are measured based on single construct as a first
order model analysis. Regression result of SEM analysis indicated that trust was
influenced by the transformational leadership style. Further, this study provided the
discussions and implications from the findings.

VERIFICATION OF LEARNING OUTCOMES INVENTORY USING
EXPLORATORY FACTORS ANALYSIS (EFA)

The purpose of this study is to validate an instrument to study student perceptions
towards their achievement of learning outcomes domains which were knowledge,
practical skills, and generic skills. Through a factor analytic process it is shown that
the instrument did reflect the theoretical model. It was also useful in refining the
items for the questionnaire. The instrument is for use in future research designed to
measure student perceptions towards their achievement of learning outcomes
domains. A total of 158 engineering students of Premier Polytechnic in Malaysia
were involved in this research. A set of questionnaires was developed using four
Likert-scales. Data were analyzed descriptively for reliability (Cronbach Alpha
values) and exploratory factors analysis (EFA) was utilized to discover the latent
variables that underlie the scale.The results showed that the classification of the
Cronbach Alpha was high and very high, more than 0.70. The factor analysis showed
three factors which is Knowledge, Practical Skill and Generic Skill. Each items shows
the satisfactory load values which is greater than 0.50. Therefore, the questionnaire

In reducing indoor temperature, evaporative cooling window system using labu
sayong can be one of the alternative strategies. This system will help to tackle the
issue of increasing costs in keeping the home cool by managing the energy
consumption and also offers a better indoor environment. In preventing the issue
of increasing energy cost, this system not only cools the indoor environment as cool
as using air conditioning, but, it also relief from the indoor heat build- up. This review
aims to investigate the potential of the evaporative cooling window system using
labu sayong as an alternative reduction of indoor temperature environment in
tropical Malaysia. As commonly known Tropical Malaysia is categorized as a warm
and humid climate. Therefore, non-passive direct evaporative cooling system
suitable for Malaysia. This system is integrated with mechanical ventilation energy
operated by solar electricity as an environmental friendly concoction. The
uniqueness of this system is using the labu sayong as a medium of porous material
to provide a surface to saturate water. Through this combination, it will reduce the
temperature in providing a better indoor environment.

Hari ini, sistem pengangkutan di bandar-bandar Malaysia sering dikaitkan dengan
imej buruk seperti kesesakan, kemalangan dan ketidakcekapan pengangkutan
awam. Selain itu, kesan pembebasan gas karbon ke ruang atmosfera menyumbang
kepada pencemaran alam dan menjejaskan aspek kualiti kehidupan secara
umumnya. Oleh itu, pengangkutan aktif dikatakan penting bagi menjamin
kehidupan dalam persekitaran yang bersih, sihat dan berkualiti tinggi. Kajian yang
dijalankan ini meninjau sejauh mana permodelan dalam memformulasikan situasi
keutamaan responden berdasarkan kepada penggunaan pengangkutan aktif. Model
Konjoin Kabur digunakan untuk memperihalkan situasi penggunaan kenderaan tidak
bermotor berdasarkan kajian soal selidik terhadap 200 responden di bandar Kota
Bharu. Kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengenalpasti sejauh mana keinginan responden
berhubung faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi keutamaan pemilihan berdasarkan
kepada faktor pendorong dan penghalang kepada pengangkutan aktif. Hasil kajian
menunjukkan laluan berbasikal dan berjalan kaki hendaklah diasingkan daripada
jalan raya kenderaan bermotor. Selain itu, laluan yang berbumbung, jejantas,
tempat letak basikal berbumbung, tempat letak basikal automatik, kemudahan
tempat rehat (R&R) perlu juga disediakan.

MASALAH PELAJAR DALAM MEMPELAJARI PENGATURCARAAN BAHASA

Kertas kerja ini dihasilkan bagi mengenalpasti masalah pelajar Diploma Teknologi
Maklumat, Politeknik Balik Pulau dalam mempelajari pengaturcaraan bahasa
penghimpun. Pembelajaran pengaturcaraan bahasa penghimpun memberi
kelebihan kepada pelajar sebagai pendedahan awal untuk mengenali
pengaturcaraan. Di politeknik, kursus DFT1113 Computer Organisation merangkumi
struktur pengaturcaraan komputer dalam bahasa penghimpun dengan
menggunakan mikropemproses Motorola 68000 dipelajari oleh pelajar semester 1.
Melalui kursus ini, pelajar diajar tentang perhubungan antara pengaturcaraan
dengan mikropemproses melalui penggunaan unit pengawal, ingatan dan
pendaftar. Sehubungan itu, pelajar akan dapat memahami bahasa tahap tinggi
dengan lebih baik dengan adanya asas pengetahuan bahasa penghimpun. Namun,
pelajar sering menghadapi masalah dalam mempelajari pengaturcaraan bahasa
penghimpun. Masalah- masalah tersebut hendaklah dikenalpasti agar mampu
membantu pelajar mempelajari pengaturcaraan bahasa penghimpun secara efektif.
Penghasilan kertas kerja ini adalah untuk mengkaji masalah pelajar dalam
mempelajari pengaturcaraan bahasa penghimpun serta membantu membangunkan
bahan pembelajaran untuk pengaturcaraan bahasa penghimpun. Skop kajian ini
terdiri daripada 44 orang pelajar semester satu, Diploma Teknologi Maklumat,
Politeknik Balik Pulau. Keputusan yang diperolehi memberi cadangan asas dalam
pembangunan bahan pembelajaran dan pendekatan kepada pengaturcaraan
bahasa penghimpun.

Kerajaan sesebuah negara menggunakan Polisi Makroekonomi untuk
mencapai objektif ekonomi seperti pertumbuhan guna tenaga dan kestabilan
inflasi. Dasar Fiskal Konvensional yang digunakan bagi mencapai
Pertumbuhan Ekonomi tidak dapat mencapai objektif ekonomi sepenuhnya.
Objektif kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji keberkesanan pelaksanaan
DasarFiskal Islam bagi mengatasi masalah inflasi serta mengkaji persepsi dan
kekangan sesebuah negara islam dalam melaksanakan DasarFiskal Islam.
Metodologi kajian menggunakan kaedah diskriptif iaitu membuat tinjauan
lapangan. Responden kajian seramai 40 orang dipilih dari kalangan pensyarah
akademik Jabatan Perdagangan Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.
Data yang dikutip diproses dengan perisian SPSS. Dapatan kajian
menunjukkan pelaksanaan Dasar Fiskal Islam lebih berkesan dalam
menangani masalah inflasi dalam ekonomi. Semoga hasil kajian ini memberi
maklumat yang signifikan yang menyumbang kepada pengayaan ilmu dalam
disiplin berkenaan.

STUDENTS EXPERIENCE IN LEARNING FUNDAMENTAL PROGRAMMING: AN

Programming courses have been used as one component of the curriculum to be
learned not only in the field of Information Technology, but also needed in most
areas of the program such as Science, Mathematics, and Engineering at the tertiary
level. However, this course is difficult and complex and it is categorized as one of
the seven major challenges in educational computing. The aim of this study is to
explore the views of female and male students regarding their experiences and
difficulties while learning the courses in Programming. This study uses questionnaire
survey method to the 114 students who took the subject of Fundamental
Programming (EC201) at the Polytechnic Sultan Azlan Shah. Data was analyzed using
SPSS and results are shown by the mean and standard deviation. Overall, the level
of students' understanding content of the subjects is moderate and the most
difficult topics for the male and female students are Array Data Structure.
Furthermore, both genders agree that the activity such as understanding the
structure of programming is the most difficult Programming activity. The second
most difficult activity for male students is program development environment, while
for the females, the second most difficult activity is finding bugs from program code.
The computers that do not function properly will lead to poor performance of the
students in Programming.

THE IMPACT OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN YOUNG
PEOPLE IN THE EUROPEAN MODELS OF EDUCATION – EMPIRICAL STUDY

Education is the receiving of the socio-historical influence that the sociology of
education aims to explain. From a global perspective, political, economic,
demographic, technological and religious. The system adjusts to the limitations of the
social and the features that it provides. The education system will then be the
reflection of the global system itself. Objective: develop a model of multivariate
analysis (regression analysis) that can show the differences between the returns to
education of young people in vocational education Results: Current investigations
are determined by the costs and benefits of education, instead of determining the
monetary costs and educational benefits. Based on an environment of uncertainty
about choices and pathways of young people in analysis, lead us to the realization of
a nonlinear model of educational returns. For a given speech people respond in
different ways, and there is a unique effect of educational policies therefore analyze
this investigation under a heterogeneous model of educational returns and,
therefore, we intend to introduce a variable in our regression model that permits
reflect on the variability of educational policy. Many empirical studies have been
conducted through the effects of vocational education by a simple specification. This
specification is based on the simple distinction between the young people who
receive a vocational education and young people who receive an education by the
general pathway Conclusion: Education is certainly the one which has the greatest
impact on economic and educational return in young people in the labor market.
There is a positive effect on the education of young people return to vocational
education, compared with those who do not have the 12 years of study.

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SCIENCE PROCESS SKILL AND ACHIEVEMENT
THROUGH EXPERIMENT IN LABORATORY: VOLUMETRIC TITRATION

The study aimed to investigate students’ learning achievement and retention of acid
base volumetri titration by using four inquiry-based learning. The experiments
included: (1) acidimetric, (2) alkalimetri, (3) complexometri, and (4) argentometri.
Twenty eight students at Open University province of Banjarmasin during the first
academic semester of 2012 were purposively selected as participants. The data
collected, included students’ learning achievement test scores of acid base titration,
learning retention scores 30 days after the implementation, and a survey of student
satisfaction in learning inquiry-based learning were analyzed. Pretest-posttest
control group design was adopted for this study with two classrooms. Control group
was taught by traditional lecture supplemented with readings on aggressive
behavior of and other animals while experimental group was experienced with an
intervention with the same period of time (three hours), and with the same contents
and the same learning objectives as control group. Experimental skills test, students’
group poster, questionnaire, semi-structured interview, and classroom observation
were used to gather data. The results revealed that students experiencing an
intervention gained better both aggressive behavior understanding and
experimental skills than the tradition.

Pendidikan perakaunan penting bagi bidang perniagaan atau bukan perniagaan dan
ini merupakan salah satu faktor ramai dalam kalangan para pelajar ingin menceburi
bidang tersebut dengan mengikuti pendidikan perakaunan di peringkat sekolah
hinggalah ke peringkat insitusi pengajian tinggi. Cabaran bagi mereka adalah
kesukaran memahami kursus Asas Perakaunan yang lebih berfokuskan kepada
pengiraan dan pemahaman konsep mengakibatkan berlakunya kebimbangan yang
ekstrim dalam kalangan pelajar. Melalui pendekatan pengajaran perakaunan “Smart
Accounting” yang diperkenalkan, dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa markah
pelajar yang mengikuti kursus Asas Perakaunan ini telah meningkat sebanyak 36.2
peratus. Pelajar juga dapat menyelesaikan soalan-soalan berkaitan dengan tajuk
Penyata Kewangan dan pelarasannya dalam tempoh masa yang lebih singkat kerena
mereka mahir dan seronok menggunakan langkah-langkah yang terdapat dalam
pendekatan “Smart Accounting” ini. Selain itu, pendekatan ini amat praktikal untuk
digunakan oleh para pelajar kerana ianya dapat mengubah sikap pelajar terhadap
kursus perakaunan dan seterusnya memotivasikan mereka bagi mengikuti kursuskursus perakaunan yang lain di semester yang lebih tinggi. Secara tidak langsung,
ianya boleh mengurangkan rasa kebimbangan dalam kalangan pelajar semester satu
di Jabatan Perdagangan bagi meneruskan pengajian mereka di PTSB.

The obtained results were in good agreement with experimental and theoretical
data. Cu2Zn1-xCdxSnS4 nanostructures with different Zn and Cd contents were
grown by a sol-gel method on porous silicon (63.93%) substrata. The obtained
Cu2Zn1-xCdxSnS4 nanostructures/PS (63.93%) products were investigated by Field
Emission-Scanning Electron Microscope ( FE-SEM ), X-ray diffraction (XRD), band gap
shifted with increasing Cd content from (1.84 nm) (x = 0) to 1.67 nm (x =1). Current
(I)–Voltage (V) measurements of the Ag/n-Si PS /Cu2Zn1-xCdxSnS4/Ag diode when
X= 0, 0.6, 1 showed the highest photo response for Cu2Zn0.4Cd0.6SnS4
composition.

Kajian ini di lakukan untuk membuat penganalisaan jisim batuan dan penganalisaan
kestabilan cerun batuan di Lebuhraya Utara–Selatan (KM 173.7 antara
persimpangan Parit Buntar dan persimpangan Jawi). Kajian ini melibatkan
pengumpulan data yang merangkumi sudut kecondongan dan arah kecondongan
kekar, jenis kekar, gred luluhawa, jarak kekar, keadaan air tanah serta kekuatan
mampatan ekapaksi batuan. Pengelasan batuan dibuat berdasarkan sistem
pengelasan Bienawski dan pengelasan Laubscher. Penganalisaan streografik
digunakan untuk menganalisa ketakstabilan cerun. Secara keseluruhan hasil
keputusan menunjukkan cerun dan blok batuan yang dikaji berada dalam kelas 1
(sangat stabil dan selamat) berdasasrkan sistem pengelasan Bienawski dan kelas 2
(baik) berdasarkan sistem pengelasan Laubscher. Berdasarkan kepada penumpuan
kontur dalam unjuran streografik, didapati wujud 3 set kekar bermiring secara
hampir dalam arah Barat Laut-Barat Daya, Utara-Selatan dan Timur-Barat. Jenis
kegagalan jika ianya berlaku adalah dari jenis kegagalan baji. Penganalisaan
streografik juga menunjukkan cerun berada dalam keadaan stabil dan selamat dari
segi geometri. Walaubagaimanapun, ianya tidak mengambilkira faktor-faktor lain
seperti kekuatan ricih permukaan kekar dan tunjaman garis persilangan antara 2
satah kekar.

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effectiveness of learning using MI
Courseware. This courseware utilized multiple learning approaches that could
achieve community colleges mission to provide a systematic and integrated
education and training. The theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) was used in this
paper based on the ADDIE teaching model that consisted of five phases. The
evaluation of MI Courseware was completed by 42 students from Kolej Komuniti
Masjid Tanah. The results showed that the MI Courseware could help and enhance
student’s skills and knowledge in Community College. Overall, the perception of
respondents towards the MI Courseware was encouraging.

PROBLEM SOLVING PERFORMANCE MEDIATED BY ONLINE DISCUSSION

The study emphasis on the problem solving performance specifically quality and
confidence of solutions proposed using online discussion board called Collab2learn
Discussion Board (DB). The research objective for the study is “to suggest the
suitable combination of gender and internship exposure at different synchronicity
and feedback format on solutions proposed by using online discussion board”. The
results indicated synchronicity had statistically significant effect on solutions’ quality
and confidence at different gender. It is suggested to have symbiosis between male
and female learners during collaborative problem learning because both have
produced high average scores for quality and confidence in proposed solutions.

Making education relevant to the working world is as pressing a challenge in
Malaysia as it is in other regions of the world. The Strategic Structured Internship
Programme, or popularly known as SSIP, is a collaborative initiative between
Politeknik Banting Selangor (PBS) and the Selangor Human Resource Development
Centre (SHRDC). It is designed and developed to give students the kind of confidence
needed, as what they learned in class is applicable to the workplace. On the other
hand, this will also equip the new workforce with the skills required at entry level of
the current industry. The purpose of this initiative is to improve the employment
rate of PBSs students upon graduating, which is one of the Key Performance
Indicator of Public Polytechnics in Malaysia. This will also contribute in bridging the
gap between academia and industry. Oftentimes, the skills mismatch between
graduates and the employers’ requirement is cited as one of the main causes of
graduate unemployment. Hence, this may constitute the so-called nuts and bolts of
bridging the gap. In the implementation of SSIP, the roles of SHRDC and PBS are very
well defined. SHRDC, being closer to industries, is responsible in identifying and
engaging suitable industry partners to participate in the programme. PBS is
responsible in the selection of suitable candidates (students) to be part of the
programme. The SSIP entails a three (3) phase structured programme with its builtin monitoring mechanism. Since the SSIP is a pilot project, hence the target group
comprises participating students from the 4th semester of the Mechanical
Engineering Diploma programme. SHRDC and PBS work hand-in-hand in trying to
enable participating students acquire the right and relevant skills that will enhance
their employability.

Visual information is important in the field of robotics to assist object recognition
and route mapping. However, variations of lighting fixtures impede the
generalization for indoor illumination and therefore require image correction.
Hence, the study will analyze on the effect of different white light illumination which
produce different reflection on captured image using industrial digital camera. Since
most of the object on earth is inhomogeneous, this research mainly focused on
samples of inhomogeneous object and studies the reflection characteristic. The
spherical objects painted with the fluorescent coats are the object of study. To
maintain the colour constancy of the object, the correction factor is obtained using
MATLAB software to ensure the result of the colour image after processing is almost
the same with the colour of benchmark image.

landing and taxing. The research focused on bird strike occurrence at airport level
and the effect of bird strikes to the safety as well as performance of aircraft. The
data were collected by reviewing various sources such as journals, websites, articles,
and conducting interviews. The interviews were conducted at several airports in the
United Kingdom such as Gatwick Airport and Cardiff Airport. The findings identify
the current prevention method, control procedure, regulation and data at different
airports related to bird strike. The most effective method to prevent bird strike at
both airports is also highlighted. The findings serve as a foundation for future
studies regarding bird strike at airport level.

PRESSURE AND HEAT APPLICATION ON CURING A COMPOSITE REPAIR

This study investigated a composite repair structure related to the methods of
conducting a repair on an aircraft part. Types of curing repair and damage associated
with an aircraft were identified. Further, the methods and practices applied for each
repair were examined and compared with the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM)
and the Structure Repair Manual (SRM). The comparisons of repairing methods for
different composite parts were also conducted. The best method or solution to be
implemented to the structure was identified. The findings provide knowledge about
the criteria and the best solution upon doing a repair as well as a reference to those
involved in composite structure field.

Penambahbaikan dan pemantapan sistem pendidikan bagi menghadapi cabaran alaf
ke-21 haruslah dilaksanakan bagi penyegaran, pembaharuan, pengukuhan dan
penyusunan semula program yang dilaksanakan. Program khemah kerja geoteknik
(Geocamp) telah dilaksanakan bagi program Diploma Kejuruteraan Awam yang
mendaftar kursus CC502. Program ini menggunakan kaedah koperatif yang lebih
interaktif berbanding corak pembelajaran tradisional. Seramai 35 orang peserta
program telah terlibat dalam kajian ini. Pengumpulan data dibuat melalui temubual
dan refleksi keberkesanan perlaksanaan program. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan
secara keseluruhan semua pelajar dan pensyarah dapat menguasai semua program
yang dijalankan serta dapat mengaplikasikan dalam kerja lapangan sebenar bagi
meningkatkan kreativiti, inovasi dan budaya ilmu pelajar seperti kemahiran
pengurusan berkumpulan.

KEGAGALAN PELAJAR DIPLOMA KEJURUTERAAN AWAM DALAM
MENGUASAI KURSUS KEJURUTERAAN

Kerajaan sentiasa memberi perhatian yang serius kepada kecemerlangan akademik
dalam kalangan pelajar Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (IPT). Demi mencapai
kecemerlangan akademik, pelajar Diploma Kejuruteraan Awam perlu menguasai
kursus kejuruteraan yang merupakan teras utama dalam Program Kejuruteraan
Awam. Namun begitu, bilangan pelajar kejuruteraan yang menerima Anugerah
Ketua Jabatan setiap tahun adalah rendah iaitu kurang daripada 10% daripada
jumlah pelajar yang tamat pengajian. Kajian ini dilaksanakan untuk mengenalpasti
punca-punca kegagalan pelajar Diploma Kejuruteraan Awam dalam menguasai
kursus kejuruteraan dan juga faktor-faktor yang dapat membantu pelajar
menguasai kursus kejuruteraan. Instrumen kajian adalah soal selidik dengan skala
Likert Empat Mata. Sampel kajian terdiri daripada 703 orang responden yang
mengikuti Program Kejuruteraan Awam bagi sesi Jun 2015. Dapatan kajian
menunjukkan bahawa 70.3% daripada jumlah responden bersetuju bahawa salah
satu punca kegagalan pelajar menguasai kursus kejuruteraan adalah kurang minat
terhadap kursus tersebut. Selain itu, terdapat 61.9% daripada jumlah responden
bersetuju bahawa persekitaran pembelajaran yang tidak kondusif turut
menyumbang kepada kegagalan pelajar menguasai kursus kejuruteraan. Dapatan
kajian juga menunjukkan bahawa seramai 380 orang responden bersetuju bahawa
pelajar yang kurang bermotivasi untuk menguasai kursus kejuruteraan mudah gagal
untuk menguasai kursus tersebut. Kajian ini juga mendapati faktor-faktor seperti
motivasi dan sokongan daripada ibu bapa, gaya pembelajaran dan sikap pelajar
memainkan peranan penting dalam membantu pelajar menguasai kursus
kejuruteraan. Secara kesimpulannya, kecemerlangan akademik dalam kalangan
graduan adalah amat penting demi pembangunan negara.

PENILAIAN PRESTASI PELAJAR LATIHAN INDUSTRI SEMESTER AKHIR (LISA)

Latihan industri merujuk kepada penempatan pelajar di sesebuah organisasi untuk
menjalankan latihan praktikal dalam industri terpilih di luar dan dalam negara dalam
jangkamasa yang ditetapkan sebelum dianugerahkan persijilan. Dalam sistem
kurikulum Politeknik Malaysia, lulus kursus latihan industri merupakan salah satu
syarat wajib sebelum layak dipertimbangkan untuk penganugerahan diploma.
Program Diploma Teknologi Makanan (DTM) yang ditawarkan di Politeknik Sultan
Haji Ahmad Shah, Pahang merupakan program pertama yang diarahkan oleh
Jabatan Pengajian Politeknik untuk menjalani Latihan Industri Semester Akhir (LISA)
sejak tahun 2009. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenalpasti prestasi pelajar latihan
industri semester akhir dari persepsi industri dan juga mengenalpasti keperluan
industri dalam pengambilan pelajar latihan industri semester akhir dan graduan
politeknik. Responden kajian ini merupakan 90 industri dari seluruh Malaysia yang
telah mengambil pelajar sebagai pelatih di organisasi mereka selama 20 minggu
untuk menjalani latihan industri. Seramai 133 orang pelajar telah dinilai oleh
penyelia mereka di industri dalam 6 aspek iaitu celik teknologi, kemahiran
berkomunikasi, kerja berpasukan, polisi, tatacara dan peraturan, etika profesional
serta pelaporan. Dapatan kajian dianalisis menggunakan frekuensi dan peratus.
Secara kesimpulannya, prestasi pelajar latihan industri semester akhir dari program
DTM berada dalam lingkungan baik dan cemerlang. Hal ini dapat dibuktikan dengan
pencapaian sekurang-kurangnya 80% pelajar telah dinilai sebagai tahap baik dan
cemerlang dalam keenam-enam aspek yang dinilai. Dapatan kajian ini dapat
mengenalpasti keperluan industri dalam pengambilan graduan sebagai pekerja
seterusnya mempertingkatkan kadar kebolehpasaran graduan politeknik.

STUDENT SATISFACTION AND LEVEL OF ACCEPTANCE WITH BLENDED

Blended Learning (also known as hybrid or mixed-mode), includes the use of media
as well as the normal classroom way of teaching. This combination of in class mixed
with the online learning approach, would improve the learning process for students.
The purpose of this study was to determine the student’s satisfaction as well as their
level of acceptance towards blended learning. This study was measured based on
these factors such as instructor, technology, interaction and instruction. The results
of this study showed that the students were satisfied with all the factors. Students
were also highly satisfied with the blended approach as shown by the mean score.
In all, the results were very encouraging and could be further improved as the
blended learning approach has yet to be fully adopted in the teaching arena.

ATTITUDE AND THEIR ORAL PERFORMANCE SCORS IN ENGLISH ORAL

The objective of this present study was to identify the undergraduate students’
attitude in delivering oral presentation in English. It was also to point out the extent
of the relationship between undergraduates’ attitude and their oral performance
scores in English oral presentation. A questionnaire was administered to 242
undergraduate students (aged 17-25). Descriptive analysis and Person productmoment correlation test were employed in the present study. The results of this
study revealed that students have a slightly positive attitude pertaining to oral
presentation in English and there was no significant correlation between
undergraduates’ attitude and their oral performance scores in English oral
presentation.

ASSESSING ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTIONS AMONG MALAYSIAN
POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS: THE CASE OF ENGINEERING STUDENTS

The students of today are tomorrow’s potential entrepreneurs. This may explain
the reason of entrepreneurship education that has been aggressively implemented
at the tertiary education level. However, entrepreneurial intention among
Malaysian Polytechnic engineering students remains unknown due to the lack of
research in the subject. Objective: A survey was conducted to investigate the
relationship between family business background, own business experience and
entrepreneurship programs towards the employment aspiration among engineering
students. In addition, this research determines the motivation and barriers to
become entrepreneurs. Results: The results indicate significant correlation between
family business background and own business experience towards job aspiration but
insignificant correlation between the entrepreneurship program against the job
aspiration. Perceived benefits in self-realisation are the main motivators to be
entrepreneurs and perceived difficulties in financial issues are the main barriers that
impediment the student’s intention to be entrepreneurs. Conclusion: The findings
could be a basis to develop entrepreneurial programs or curriculum specially
designed for engineering students as they are expected to find business
opportunities in such an innovative and dynamic area that will, in a way promote
economic growth.

ADDRESSING THE NATION’S NEEDS: A STUDY OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES’
SUCCESS STORIES

The establishment of Community Colleges in 2001 supports the government’s
intention to democratize education and embeds lifelong learning as our culture. To
date, community colleges have provided opportunities for the society to acquire
basic skills, to provide them with suitable education and learning pedagogy, to
upgrade proceeding qualification and experience, as well as to increase community
involvement. Therefore a study was conducted to identify, measure and document
the success rate of the graduates and short courses participants of the Community
Colleges getting employed especially into the private sector. The study aims to
investigate and document the key success factors of Community Colleges into a
Coffee Table Book. It details the success stories of the institutions from the
perspectives of the graduates, students, participants of the courses and the staff.
Through this research, a success indicator for all respondents in the study was
determined. Due to the various goals and target groups of the Community Colleges,
the success of each respondent was measured based on their goal setting. Our
analysis shows that all respondents were successful as they have achieved the goals
set during the registration. The success indicator of each respondent were identified
and measured through a complete listing of what they wanted to be and their
expectations upon enrolment. Conclusion: Family support, the effectiveness of
teaching and learning system, topped with experienced lecturers of the Community
Colleges were the success factors based on the analysis.

Kualiti sumber manusia adalah menjadi sesuatu yang penting dalam menentukan
kebolehpasaran graduan. Walau bagaimanapun, permasalahan ini masih lagi
menjadi isu utama oleh pihak majikan dan industri di mana kualiti graduan yang
dilahirkan oleh institusi pengajian tinggi tidak sebagaimana yang diharapkan oleh
mereka. Banyak isu berkaitan telah diperdebatkan antara ahli akademik dan
industri, namun gambaran awal jelas menunjukkan kedua pihak masih tidak
mencapai keselarasan pendapat disebabkan kekangan yang ada. Isu ini juga
melibatkan para graduan politeknik dan bagi memastikan setiap graduan berupaya
memperoleh pekerjaan, Politeknik Banting Selangor (PBS) telah mengambil inisiatif
mencipta Formula Kecemerlangan sebagai ‘flagship’ PBS. Melalui formula E= ƒ
{A+G+C} yang dibangunkan ini, segala aktiviti yang dirancang dapat diselaraskan dan
lebih berstruktur bagi memandu halatuju PBS dalam memperkemaskan ‘Key
Performance Indicator (KPI)’ bagi kebolehpasaran graduan. Tiga faktor penyumbang
kepada nilai kebolehpasaran graduan (E) telah dikenalpasti iaitu ‘Academic
Achievement ’/Pencapaian Akademik(A), ‘Generic Skills’/Kemahiran Insaniah(G) dan
‘Collaboration’/Jaringan Kolaborasi(C). Bagi memastikan kecemerlangan dalam
pencapaian akademik (A), pemantauan keatas tiga (3) perkara iaitu ‘Curriculum (C)’,
‘Intructional (I) dan ‘Assessment (A)’telah diatur secara sistematik dan proses
penambahbaikan bagi ke atas ‘CIA’ dilaksanakan secara berterusan (CQI). Aktiviti
pelajar juga telah dirancang secara berstruktur berdasarkan kepada tujuh (7)
domain Kemahiran Insaniah yang terkandung dalam ‘G’ iaitu; G1 : Kemahiran
berkomunikasi, G2: Pemikiran Kritis dan Kemahiran Menyelesaikan Masalah, G3:
Pembelajaran Berterusan dan Pengurusan Maklumat, G4: Kemahiran
Keusahawanan, G5: Moral dan Etika Professional, G6: Kemahiran Kepinpinan, G7:
Kemahiran Kerja Berpasukan. Jaringan kolaborasi ‘C” yang diwujudkan antara sektor
awam dan swasta telah dapat memainkan peranan bagi membantu meningkatkan
kebolehpasaran pelajar dan setiap program yang dirancang dan diikuti oleh pelajar
senantiasa relevan dan berdaya saing. Dengan mewujudkan satu mekanisma yang
lebih teratur melalui formula, E= ƒ {A+G+C} ini, pemantauan terhadap pelaksanaan
‘Pelan Strategik PBS 2015-2020’ yang mengambilkira setiap komponen A, G dan C
memerlukan penghayatan dan komitmen yang padu dari setiap warga PBS dalam
benar-benar dapat memainkan peranan masing-masing dalam usaha memastikan

Pendidikan Khas di Malaysia adalah satu usaha yang berterusan untuk melahirkan
insan yang berkemahiran, berpandangan jauh, berupaya, beriman, berdikari,
mampu merancang dan menguruskan kehidupan harian serta menyedari potensi
diri sendiri yang selaras dengan Falsafah Pendidikan Kebangsaan. Aliran pendidikan
teknikal dan vokasional juga tidak dikecualikan pelajar yang mempunyai keperluan
khas. Oleh itu, guru pendidikan khas aliran kemahiran harus mempunyai karektor
yang istimewa untuk mendidik pelajar golongan ini. Namun begitu, masih belum
wujudnya satu model standard guru pendidikan khas terutamanya aliran kemahiran.
Kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengenal pasti tahap penerapan elemen dan dimensi
nilai retorik dalam proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran guru aliran kemahiran bagi
pelajar pendidikan khas masalah pendengaran. Dapatan kajian ini menunjukkan
penerapan elemen nilai retorik ethos dan logos dalam kalangan guru berada pada
tahap tinggi, diikuti dengan pathos pada tahap sederhana. Dapatan kajian juga
menunjukkan penerapan nilai retorik bagi kebanyakan dimensi pada tahap tinggi,
hanya dimensi perasaan dan visualisasi pada tahap sederhana. Umumnya, guru
pendidikan khas aliran kemahiran telah menerapkan nilai retorik pada tahap yang
tinggi. Setiap guru digalak untuk menguasai nilai retorik supaya dapat membantu
para pelajar menerokai ilmu pengetahuan yang disampaikan oleh mereka dengan
berkesan dan seterusnya memberi impak yang positif terhadap pencapaian pelajar.

EFFECTIVENESS OF LEARNING AND TEACHING INNOVATION SPECIAL

This study aims to review the effectiveness of learning and teaching innovation
for special education (hearing) via video at the Polytechnic Tuanku Syed
Sirajuddin, Perlis, Malaysia. The Polytechnic Special Skills Certificate (Hotel
Catering) started in the semester of June 2014. A sample composing 22 students
from the Department of Tourism and Hospitality were selected. Data were
collected through questionnaires and these were then analyzed using SPSS
(statistical package for social sciences). The result upon analysis showed that the
level of understanding of special education students (hearing) at the Polytechnic
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin was moderate with a score that is average. It is hoped
that the finding of this study can serve as a guide to the management of
Polytechnic Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin in further evaluating the effectiveness of the
video for the lecturers that taught the special education students (hearing). The
various aspects of the role as described in the part of the proposal could also be
considered to enhance the delivery of the teaching lessons for special education
(hearing).

TVET: APPLICATION OF SOLIDWORKS AND SIMULINK IN 2 DOF SIMPLE
QUADRUPED ROBOT MODELING

TVET was introduced to increase skilled human capital as skills are essential to
achieve poverty reduction, economic recovery and a sustainable environment.
Among the things that can add value to engineering students are their skills of using
available software to develop 3D models and implement the simulation. This paper
spells the development of a 3D Model of 2 DOF quadruped robot and analyzing the
performance through simulation. The process undertaken to simulate the robot is
explained, starting from the use of SolidWorks to build the 3D model, SimMechanics
to export the model, to Matlab till Simulink is applied for robot movement analysis.
The result showed that a simple quadruped robot with 2 DOF movements was
successfully simulated. This clearly shows that the use of a 3D simulation can help
students in the development of an engineering project. This simulation will provide
them with knowledge and information before embarking on any projects which is
essential yet vital to the project’s success.
