From The
President:
Keep the Momentum
Going
Tom DeGeorgio
2013-2014 President
Greetings Fellow Members,
Each year the incoming President is tasked with
setting goals and establishing a theme for the year.
As you will see, a number of my goals are carryovers from last year, along with several new ones.
As I reflect on Mark Lee's presidency, I am struck
by how ambitious his goals were and how much
he and his team accomplished. His theme could
not have been more appropriate and I applaud the
successes and all that has been accomplished by
Mark and his team.
It is now my team's turn to take the field and
build on this excellent work. The Houston CPA
Society was established in 1928 and I believe we
are now at a key point in our history. What sets
our Society apart are our strong traditions. These
traditions keep us focused on our core purposes to
educate, inform, lead and empower our members
to meet the challenges of the future.
We also find ourselves challenged by many
changes in our profession and ongoing budget
constraints both to our members individually and
to the Society as a whole. Because of these challenges, we have to be willing to try new things,
new ways of working, and to respond in a nimble
fashion to the many changes we face. As a result,
we must seek to balance the importance of

I am excited to be working with such an
energetic and talented Board of Directors.
I have challenged the entire Board to
"lead from the front". During the coming
months, members of the Board of
Directors and the Executive Committee
will be out and about at conferences, CPE
sessions, and Society events to meet you
and discuss issues that are on your minds.
We want to encourage your input to the
Board and to the Society Staff.

Last October at the Strategic Planning
Conference, the Strategic Planning
Committee and Society Leadership met to
consider and discuss the Society strengths
and weaknesses, as well as, the threats
and opportunities that face us in the
future. As a result, that team developed
three key initiatives for 2013-2014 that
build on our strengths and focus on the
perceived opportunities:
• Initiative One…to increase member
involvement in CPE, on committees,
and boost attendance at our many
events. CPE events have always been
the cornerstone of the Society, along
with our many other events, like the
newly-revitalized Young Professionals
group.
• Initiative Two…to increase member
recruitment, capitalizing on the
progress made this past year. We will
focus on increasing membership from

your input and candor.
To each member, thank you for your
membership and I look forward to hearing from each of you over the days and

hosted by the Membership Development Committee and the Young Professionals, to network
a little and let loose after busy season. Make sure to watch for more invitations to networking

Society Hosts Conference &
Reception For Incoming
Leadership
The Houston CPA Society operates on a June 1 – May 31 fiscal year. To
better prepare, incoming leadership for the Society came together on
April 29, 2013 in the CPA Training Facility to learn more about the
inner workings and processes that make this fine tuned machine run
smoothly from year to year. The robust agenda included:
President-elect Tom DeGeorgio welcoming officers, board members,
and committee chairs and vice chairs outlining the full agenda and
teasing all with the promise of a juggling "ice breaker" exercise.
(l to r) Jim Stinson, Vice Chair, Accounting Career Awareness; Mike
Spartalis, Chair, Accounting Career Awareness; Carol Warley, Vice
President and incoming President-elect; Tom DeGeorgio, Presidentelect; Ramsey Womack, Board member and incoming Secretary; and
Paul Vanek, Treasurer and incoming Vice President.
History of the Society presented by Treasurer and incoming Vice
President Paul Vanek, followed by a review of the Society's
Governance covered by Board member and incoming Secretary
Ramsey Womack and the Society's Connection with TSCPA explained
by President and incoming TSCPA Chair Mark Lee.
17
Financial Overview conducted by Society Controller Martha Koushel
and Paul Vanek who covered financial reporting, minimum financial
standards, investments and the upcoming budget process.
Responsibilities as a Board Member or Committee Leader outlined by
Vice President and incoming President-elect Carol Warley which
included commitment, leadership, stewardship and service from Board
member down to committee volunteer, and attributes of a successful
committee.
President-elect DeGeorgio concluding the afternoon with a review of
the 2013-2014 Strategic Focus outlining his plans and goals for his
upcoming tenure. How to "juggle" all the day's information into a
cohesive plan? Relax and think about it for a while. Consult with the
staff if you need guidance. Don't worry - it'll come to you.
(standing, l to r) Robin Lunsford, Co-Chair, CPAs Helping Schools;
Cheryl O'Brien, Vice Chair, Community Services; Jim Tomlinson,
Chair, Community Services; Sheila Enriquez, Board member and
incoming Treasurer-elect; and Carol Warley, Vice President and
incoming President-elect.
Attendees were then invited to adjourn to the Society's Lounge for fellowship and refreshments. Many were heard discussing points covered
in the day's agenda; others preferred to practice their juggling skills.

CPAs Helping Schools
with your TSCPA /
Houston CPA Society Dues check-off invoice!
Many of you enjoyed previous volunteer
actions including judging entries in our Art &
Essay Contest, Recognition Awards, tutoring,
mentoring, and answering the calls by our
local school districts to participate in reading
to classes, shadowing a principal on select
days, and so much more. While some of these
programs have been discontinued in keeping
with the needs of our local schools, CPAs
Helping Schools Committee continues to
establish or provide ongoing opportunities for
our members to give back and support local
education.
In 2013-2014, we are working with many local
school districts to support their business
leader partnership program. Last year we
began offering members a chance to help in
our grant program. While many of you do not
have the time to review all submitted grant
applications, or attend the sometimes lengthy
meeting, you may act as a GRANT SCREENER. Our screeners receive three or four grant
applications, a rating sheet and instructions.
Volunteers report this one-hour effort rewarding and it provides a tremendous help to the
committee, knowing that several of their peers

One of the Houston CPA Society
Community Services Committee's
charges is to assist qualifying nonprofits with
technical assistance pro bono or at a reduced
fee. Qualifying nonprofits must complete a
request form and provide proof of their nonprofit status, if available. The request is then
distributed to a database of members who
have worked with nonprofit clients and are
willing to assist with these requests. Any fees
involved are independently negotiated
between the volunteer and the organization.

• Community foundation grants
If you are involved in a school, either as a parent, a volunteer, or an educator's friend, you
know the financial challenges principals face
each day to present optimum educational
opportunities while offering basic needs to
many students. With reduced governmental
funding, schools are on their own to create
and maintain the campus budget. Principals
spend time searching for additional funding as
they continue to manage the day-to-day
school business. Sounds like your job, doesn’t
it?
CHS faces similar challenges in our expanding
grant program. As more districts learn of the
program, CHS receives a greater number of
viable financial requests. The dedicated members of the grant review committee evaluate a
larger quantity of applications each time and
apply a share of the available funds to as many
programs as possible. This effort to reach out
and financially touch the greatest number of
schools, educational programs, and students is
possible through your financial support.
CHS enjoys multiple fundraising options:
• Voluntary donations with dues invoice
(“chapter scholarship/helping schools”)
• Permanent endowment fund
Dues donations ($10 suggested), average
$5,622 from 528 members, or about 6% of our
total membership. HELP US increase that
percentage this year and give $10 or more to
help our dedicated group provide more funding to your local school. Due to online dues
payment difficulties in 2012, TSCPA was
unable to offer this option so our income
plummeted! Schools may receive up to
$5,000 a year and we need your continued
support!

Grant Funding for Scott Saturday
Superstars\Galveston ISD
Education Foundation
The funds started our Scott Saturday
Superstars, a program to boost the academic ability of the students from Weis
Middle School as they integrated into
Scott Collegiate Academy.
CHS Committee members (back row) Bradley
Elgin and Abdul Mobin (Harper Pearson &
Company, P.C.) presented a grant check
issued to provide funds to help with uniforms
for Middle School students.
Background: The grant proposal submitted to
the Houston CPA Society in January expressed
the need for document cameras. The school
previously shared two document cameras
among all staff members and were requesting
fund to purchase additional equipment. The
cameras are used for sharing books that are in
limited supply, showcasing student work in
the classroom, and showing parents in real
time how students work out a particular reading or math strategy. "Tipps has 1,330 students and 120 staff members, so there was a
need among teachers for additional document
cameras at the school," according to math
instructional specialist Dorothy Windham.
"They are in constant use every day, and
because we have such a large staff, some
teachers have actually purchased their own
personal document cameras – at a cost of
between $100 and $200 – for daily use. We are
very grateful for the support of the Houston
CPA Society and for their generosity toward
our need. We can't say 'thank you' enough."

Background: Yellowstone Academy is a private, faith-based school founded in 2001 for
the purpose of providing a high quality education for children living in poverty. The school
opened its doors in 2002 to 64 three and four
year old students, and has added one grade
each year through eighth grade. The median
annual income of Yellowstone families averages less than $10,000. Tuition provides less
than 1% of expenses, so the school relies on
the generosity of individuals, foundations,
corporations, and congregations to meet its
operating budget. Additionally, the school
provides its students with transportation,
breakfast, lunch, and uniforms. Last year,
Yellowstone celebrated its 10th Anniversary

Top Ten Reasons to Join the Annual Golf Classic Committee

NOW!
10. Practice "begging-for-auction-items" technique at area retailers and restaurants.
9. Select auction items to bid on before anybody else sees them.
8. Work with fellow professionals to assure a successful event.
7. Watch the numbers climb towards the tournament goal.
6. Promote a great sport for the benefit of a major area children's charity.
5. Free gift bag.
4. Free food.
3. Day off from work (1) in the sun, (2) in the rain, (3) period.
2. See the Wish Child's smile as her artwork is auctioned during the tournament dinner.
And the #1 reason you should join the Annual Golf Classic Committee...(drum roll...hankies...)
1. Witness with pride the presentation of the record-breaking contribution check to Make-A-Wish.
We run the program twice a month with
an average of 25-35 participants per session. The students rotate from Math remediation (Khan Academy), Leadership
Training, Study Skills, NASA Engineering,
Zeros Are Unacceptable, and now VEXX
Robotics.
After we received the money from your
organization, I found a source for the
NASA Engineering supplies at no cost. As
a result, your organization agreed to allow
the surplus funds to be used to start a
VEXX robotic program. We now have the
robot, as well as an additional robot
donated from the VEXX Company, and are
waiting on the software to run the program. A teacher has been selected to facilitate this program next school year and
we should be ready to compete in the
Robotics competition later this fall.
In addition, we use the initiative task
equipment that you supplied for our leadership program in a new project to combat
student truancy. Any student who misses
the state mandated days of attendance
will be assigned to the truancy Saturday
program with their parents; this will be
used to avoid court. Parents will be given
information about the problems that
cause truancy, along with solutions such
as parenting skills, communication skills
and behavior contract building. The
Culminations of the four-hour program
will be a team building task for the parents and students to start the process of
family communication so they can begin
to build a relationship with school personnel that will help with truancy problems.
I have monitored the benchmark testing
and the former Weis students are doing
well academically. We expect all our students to do well on the upcoming STAAR
test.
In conclusion, I would like to thank you
for this opportunity and to express to your
board members how helpful your funding
has been. In fact, we already have plans to
use this equipment again in the upcoming
school year. Thank you so much
