Rank Company
THE PACESETTER: Apparel retailer Forever 21 Inc.
tops the list of the largest
minority-owned businesses
in Los Angeles County.
The L.A.-based company
had nearly $4 billion in
revenue for 2012. Forever
21 started in 1984 in 900
square feet of space on
Figueroa Street. Since then,
the company, co-founded
by South Korean emigrants
Do Won “Don” Chang and
his wife, Jin Sook Chang,
has grown exponentially.
Now, Forever 21 is
expanding with bigger
stores in new locations as
it grows from a boutique
retailer to a company that
can operate like a raditional
department store chain.
Some locations are larger
than 40,000 square feet. It
opened an 85,000-squarefoot store in Cerritos in
2010. The larger stores
have separate areas for
different clothing items
and brands. Those brands
include six that were
created by the company.
In addition to its Forever
21 brand, it has dedicated
lines for men, plus-size
women and a women’s
vintage brand.

In millions.
NA - Not Available N/A - Not Applicable Note: The information on this list was supplied by
representatives of the companies themselves. Companies are ranked by 2012 revenue.
Numbers that appear to be tied have been rounded. To qualify for the list, a company must
at least 50 percent minority-owned, privately-held and headquartered in Los Angeles
County. Due to the right of privately-held businesses to withhold information, the Business
Journal makes no pretense of this being a complete list of the largest minority-owned
businesses in L.A. County. To the best of our knowledge, this information is accurate as of
press time. While every effort is made to ensure the accuracy and thoroughness of the list,
omissions and typographical errors sometimes occur. Please send corrections or
additions on company letterhead to the Research Department, Los Angeles Business
Journal, 5700 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 170, Los Angeles 90036. ©2013 Los Angeles Business
Journal. This list may not be reprinted in whole or in part without prior written permission
from the editor. Reprints are available from the YGS Group, (800) 290-5460 ext. 100.
