1. The purpose of the How To Train Training Block is to train the squad leader to train his
Marines.
2. This training block consists of four (4) lectures, four (4) assigned presentations for student
practical application, and four (4) coaching workshops. See Enclosures.

1. Have Marines read Section 1 of Reference (a), How To Train Your Squad.
a. Read and discuss page 1-1, “What are My Training Responsibilities?”
Discuss the training responsibilities of the squad leader.
b. Read and discuss page 1-2. “Who Supports Me?”
c. Read and discuss page 1-3. “Guidelines for Training”
2. Discuss Reference (b), MCO 1510.25C, Troop Information Program.
a. List some of the briefs required.
b. Discuss the squad leader’s responsibilities for keeping his Marines informed.
3. Make Troop Information Assignments. See Enclosure (1). Feel free to change assignments as
needed. Refer to training schedule for place and time of evaluation.
4. During evaluation, evaluate each Marines’ presentation. Encourage peer participation. Ask
policy questions. Coach Marines. Complete one copy of Enclosure (2) on each Marine.

1. Read and discuss Section 2, “What Tools Support My Training?” of Reference (a), How To
Train Your Squad.
a. Read and discuss page 2-1, “What Training Needs to be Done?” Step through a sample
company mission which drives platoon missions, which drive numerous Collective Tasks
and Individual Skills. Have the students contribute additional individual skills needed.
b. Read and discuss page 2-2, “What are Individual Skills?” Using examples from the ITS
manual, Reference (b), discuss Tasks, Conditions and Standards. Discuss breaking a task
into smaller tasks for training.
c. Read and discuss page 2-3, “What are Collective Tasks?” Using examples from the
Platoon SOP, Reference (c), discuss types of collective tasks. Clarify the difference
between ordinary collective tasks and standardized battle drills.
d. Read and discuss page 2-4, “How Do I Use References?” Discuss strengths and
weaknesses of Reference (d), MCWP 3-11.5 Marine Infantry Squad and Reference (e)
MCWP 3-11.6 Scouting and Patrolling. Discuss the ITS manual, Reference (b). Discuss
the non-applicability of the MBST manual for infantry training.
2. Discuss Opportunity Training. Read and discuss page 3-5 of Reference (a), “What is
Opportunity Training?” Clarify opportunity training can be either individual or collective
skills. Using Enclosure (1), Opportunity Training Assignments, assign each student an

individual skills weapons or equipment brief. Clarify the availability of the ITS manual and
other training manuals. Refer to the training schedule for location and time of evaluation.
