“The Scarlet Ibis” Flipbook Project – English I Due Date__________________ OBJECTIVE: Students will analyze plot by identifying and examining the exposition, conflict, rising action, suspense, climax, denouement, theme, foreshadowing, and symbolism of a short story. Following analysis, students will create a flipbook whereby students will synthesize how each component of the plot is revealed in the story. STEPS TO COMPLETION: I. Read “Scarlet Ibis” in class. Discuss plot and literary elements. II. Complete plot graph on the back to gather information for your project. III. Create flipbook. Your flipbook will contain seven sections. Follow these steps: A) Label the flaps with the following bolded words. Use a variety of colors to label. a. EXPOSITION b. CONFLICT c. RISING ACTION d. SUSPENSE e. CLIMAX f. DENOUEMENT/RESOLUTION g. LITERARY TERMS B) On each page of the flip book, do the following: 1. Exposition : TOP – Write definition and provide visual from story. BOTTOM - In complete sentences, describe the setting, protagonist, antagonist and minor characters. 2. Conflict: TOP – Write definition and provide visual from story. BOTTOM - In complete sentences, identify the main conflict. Describe it and identify it as internal conflict or external conflict. 3. Rising Action: TOP – Write definition and provide visual from story. BOTTOM - List at least three events in complete sentences that create complications that occur before the climax. 4. Suspense: TOP – Write definition and provide visual from story. BOTTOM - Copy two sentences from the story that are especially suspenseful. Place quotation marks around each of them. 5. Climax: TOP – Write definition and provide visual from the story. BOTTOM - In a complete sentence, describe the most intense part of the story. 6. Denouement/Resolution: TOP – Write definition and provide visual from story. BOTTOM - In three complete sentences, describe the end of the story where the conflict is resolved. 7. Literary terms – TOP - Theme – Write definition. Under definition, write thematic statement (one sentence) that describes the author’s message or life lesson from the story. (Example from “Sound of Thunder”: Justice can often reveal itself in extreme ways when strong emotions arise.) TOP - Foreshadowing –Write definition. Under definition, copy two sentences from the story that are examples of foreshadowing. Place quotation marks around each of them and make inferences as to how or what they foreshadow. BOTTOM - Symbolism – Write definition. Under definition, identify three symbols in the story. Then, infer by using complete sentences as to what each symbol represents. Provide visuals for each symbol. Example: _____symbolizes________ because….. IV. Color and illustrations required on each page. No pencil. Black ink preferred for text. V. NEATLY decorate the cover. VI. MLA heading on back. Be neat and creative! You may type the words and cut/paste. You may print visuals from the internet.
