History 162 and 198:
HISTORY OF THE ANDEAN REGION
Cuzco, Peru – June 18 to July 17, 2016
Dr. Jordan Lauhon
jlauhon@ucdavis.edu
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This course analyzes the history and culture of the Andean region from pre-Columbian
times to the present. We will pay particular attention to the “indigenous” or “Indian”
populations of the region as well as the historical roots of the problems faced by the
region of Cuzco today. Readings and lectures will be complemented by various trips,
including a three-day trip to Machu Picchu. Visits to Inca ruins, lectures by leading
specialists, and discussion of contemporary Peru will increase students' understanding of
the region and its people.
You are strongly encouraged to explore Cuzco outside of class. Stroll through the many
interesting streets and plazas; peruse the produce in the outdoor food markets; practice
your Spanish/Quechua; visit museums, churches, and public monuments. In short, see as
much of Cuzco as you can (even if you’re not entirely sure what you’re looking at or how to
interpret it) and bring your questions and observations to class. There will be lectures and
discussions based on the readings and lectures, but your experiences and insights will
shape the content and direction of our meetings.
