Basic Internship in General Nursing Wards

Content
This placement offers students basic competences on general nursing wards and community care.
The placement takes 3 weeks (38h/week) or an equivalent spread over a longer time and contains
additional papers.
Study materials
A set of learning goals, time tables and feedback forms are available in English. Further regulations
are based on the general PXL placement guidelines and assessment form.
Teaching organisation
After introduction on the ward on the first day, the student will be assigned to mentor nurse, who
will coach the student on the ward. Once a week the student will be visited by a PXL lecturer to
assess his evolution and plan for further development of his competences.
Prerequisites
The students need to have passed at least 210 ECTS, before getting access to this placement.
Pediatric wards are only available to students who have attended elective/additional theoretical and
skills courses before.
Students can state their preferences for a certain ward, but they are assigned to the wards within
the possibilities of availability of training places. PXL has selected a limited number of wards with
extensive experience with international students and a sufficient number of English (Spanish)

Period: spread over 1st and 2nd semester
Content
Within a team of 2 to 4 students, the student participates in an ongoing research project or
innovation on a nursing ward or within a healthcare institute. The result is a group report and
presentation containing the theoretical and evidence based framework for the project and the
project outcome.
Study materials
Course guide available in dutch.
Teaching organization
The student team is supported by a thesis promotor and a project specialist. The promotor is a PXL
staff member that coaches the students troughout the process of the thesis. The project specialist
is a researcher, nurse manager or nurse specialist, connected to the institution in which the project
takes place. The project specialist supports the student regarding the content of the project topic

Content
The student shows his competences for self-derected learning by gathering a total amount of 75 to
90 hours of extracurricular activities, resorting under one of the following groups:
- Attending symposia, conferences or external courses related to nursing. (at least 15h of the total)
- Engaging in volunteer activities, which allow further development of nursing competences in a
clinical field other than the offered placements.
- Active participation in PXL public relations activities and promotion campaigns.
- Engaging in international projects offered by PXL nursing education to their students. (at least 5h
of the total)
Study materials
Course guide is available in Dutch.
Teaching organisation
Students document their activities in an online portfolio. Aproval for attending activities has to be
granted by the responsible teacher, before participating in the activity. In some cases a report or
proof of attendance can be asked.
Final competences
