ATHLETICS
Laurier offers a very popular intramural program. In fact, last year
more than 8,000 students participated in a variety of intramural
sports to keep their bodies as active as their minds. With options as
diverse as ultimate frisbee, squash and dodgeball, there’s a sport
for everyone.
Facilities
Laurier also provides students access to some of the best facilities in
the county. The Athletic Complex includes a state-of-the-art fitness
centre, which is currently being expanded to include another 9,000
square feet of space for additional cardio and strength-training
equipment. It also houses a triple-court gymnasium, physical therapy
room, air-conditioned squash courts, an indoor climbing wall and
many multi-purpose/fitness classrooms. The 50-metre Laurier pool
has also been recently updated to offer a better swimming experience.
Alumni Field is directly in front of the Athletic Complex and offers a
full-sized, artificial surface, providing space in the middle of campus
for students to engage in interuniversity and intramural sports as well
as spontaneous play. Visit laurierathletics.com.

So, you’re going to study at Laurier for the next few years.
To be guaranteed a place in residence, you must complete the
online application and submit it, with a $400 non-refundable
deposit, to the Residential Services office by 11:59 p.m. on June

Rooms are assigned based on preference (indicated on the

ensure that students sharing rooms are compatible — that’s
why the application form asks about your personal habits and
preferences. If you’d like to share a room with a friend, we’ll
also try to accommodate your request. When filling out your
residence applications, be sure that each of you indicates each
other as a preferred roommate, and that you select the same
residence style and room type preferences.

Roll up your sleeves
There’s no better way to meet people and feel like you are
a part of the community than by volunteering on one of the
residence councils.
Students involved in House Councils plan and manage
academic and social activities for their residence. They
organize trips, bring in guest speakers, publish house yearbooks
and newsletters and hold charity fundraising events.
LIVING OFF CAMPUS?
For those students who choose to live off campus,
we have a new program called LOCUS (Laurier
Off-Campus University Students) that functions as
a “virtual residence,” offering off-campus students
all of the support and fun of residence life...without
the building! For more information, visit
mylaurier.ca/reslife/info/locus.
What the House Councils do for each residence building,
the Inter-Residence Council does across all Laurier residences.
Members work to create a healthy residence community
through events and leadership development.
Residence Athletic Council promotes an active lifestyle for
Laurier’s residential community. Members organize
competitive and recreational leagues and tournaments, health
and wellness activities and recreational trips.

MEAL PLANS
Meal plans can be purchased by any student at Laurier, but
they are mandatory for those who live in residence. Meal
plans are included on your OneCard, and come in four sizes,
from “light eater” to “freedom,” depending on how much you
typically eat. There is a special small plan available for those
who live in an apartment-style residence, but you are also able
to upgrade to a full meal plan, if you choose. Plans have dollars
allotted to the Fresh Food Company in the main dining hall,
and dollars allotted to the food service outlets on campus.
Our Fresh Food Company in the main dining hall offers an allyou-can-eat structure for three meal periods a day. Our chefs
create weekly rotating menus featuring items such as all-day
omelettes, homemade stone-fired pizzas, burgers, sushi, salads,
pastas and more. Our team takes pride in creating healthy
menu items that fit a variety of dietary constraints. We have
a dedicated vegetarian station and several gluten-free items
available daily. We can accommodate special diets, such as
halal, and most food allergies and restrictions.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Placement experiences, on- and off-campus work permits and
co-op opportunities allow international students to integrate
their academic studies with practical experience. Through these
avenues, students gain marketable skills, network with future
employers and earn a salary. Unique to Canada is the ability
for international students to stay and work here for three years
following graduation and then apply for citizenship.
Part-time work
Laurier offers plenty of opportunities for part-time employment
as a teaching assistant, residence don, computer analyst,
telefundraiser or through the hundreds of food service
opportunities right on campus. We are also located in a thriving
community with a healthy retail and service sector that offers
plenty of employment opportunities throughout the year.
Work permits
All full-time students studying in Canada with a valid study
permit are allowed to work on campus. After six months in
good academic standing, international students are entitled
to apply for an Off-Campus Work Permit. This permit allows
students to work up to 20 hours a week and work full-time
during regular school breaks. Laurier’s international student
advisors are available to assist students with this process.

CITY INFORMATION
Kitchener-Waterloo (K-W) is a thriving, culturally diverse
community, that is home to the largest Oktoberfest celebration
this side of Munich and the birthplace of the world-renowned
BlackBerry smartphone. With a population of about 350,000,
K-W is small enough to be safe, comfortable and easy to
get around, yet big enough to provide most of the services
expected of a large city – a great selection of restaurants, a
symphony, live theatre, interesting shops, art galleries, parks
and an efficient public transit system.
There is an extensive variety of facilities and activities in the
community, including walking and hiking trails, golf courses,
skating rinks, soccer fields and even a ski hill!
In between classes and studying, there are plenty of spots to
get away for a little down time. Toronto, with all it has to offer,
is only an hour away; the United States is two hours south; and
the beaches of Lake Huron and Lake Erie are close enough for
day trips.
K-W is also home to an international airport offering flights to
Ottawa, Western Canada and winter sun destinations.
K-W is a very student-friendly community, offering great value
restaurants, shopping and entertainment. The opposite list
contains a few popular spots to visit while in K-W, according to
our students. All locations featured are within walking distance
or a short bus ride from our Waterloo campus.
