SEASON ENDS IN LAKE CHARLES The Byrd Yellow Jackets advanced to the regional round of the Class 5A playoffs before falling, 38‐21, to the eventual state runners‐up Barbe Buccaneers in Lake Charles. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE TEAM The Yellow Jackets finished the 2012 season with an 8‐3 record. Byrd captured a share of the District 1‐5A title with a thrilling 31‐30 win over Airline on sopho‐
more kicker Jake Wyss’ 23‐yard field goal. The Jackets then defeated the Natchi‐
toches Central Chiefs 41‐13 in the Bi‐district round of the playoffs before falling to Barbe in the regional round. Barbe would go on to beat District 1‐5A foe Park‐
way, and defending state champion West Monroe before losing in the state finals to Archbishop Rummel. RECENT RESULTS The No. 15 seeded Byrd Yellow Jackets lost 38‐21 to the No. 2 seeded Barbe Buc‐
caneers in Lake Charles. Barbe quarterback Kennon Fontenot completed 18 of 28 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns, and he rushed for another score to lead the Bucs. Wide receiver Trey Quinn had 10 receptions for 147 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. THE SEASON The Byrd Yellow Jackets just completed another fine season. After losing 40 sen‐
iors off of the 2011 state semifinalist team, little was expected of the 2012 Yellow Jackets. However, this group of Jackets proved the pundits wrong by posting a 7‐
2 regular season record and winning a share of the District 1‐5A title. The Jackets’ eight wins marked the fifth time in seven years that Byrd has won eight or more games. THE COACHES Mike Suggs just completed his 15th season as the head coach at C.E. Byrd. Suggs, who is the school’s all‐time winningest coach, owns a 104‐61 (.630) record as the top Jacket. Suggs was the Class 5A Coach of Year and the District 1‐5A Coach of the Year in 2011. Suggs was an All‐State end for the Southwood Cowboys in 1980 before taking his talents on to Northeast Louisiana University, now ULM. After two years of coaching at Southwood, he came to Byrd in 1990. In 1998, Suggs replaced Alan Carter to become the 13th head coach in Byrd history. Suggs and his wife Sandy have a daughter Cali, who is at ULM, and a son Andrew, who is a freshman punter at Byrd. The rest of the Byrd coaching staff includes James Wilkerson, Wade Leone, Stacy Ballew, Lindsey Bruno, Jason Pope, Eric Evans, Chad Lewis, James Bradford, James Opie and Scotty Dickson. Ballew, Lewis, Brad‐
ford and Dickson are all former Byrd players. 2012 SEASON WRAP-UP

LORENCE LED THE JACKETS J.D. Lorence took over as the starting quarterback in the Battle on the Border game versus Marshall. The switch paid great dividends for Byrd as Lorence led the Yellow Jackets to an 8‐2 record and a share of the District 1‐5A title. Lorence led the team in rushing with 787 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. Lorence, who had three touchdown runs of 50‐plus yards, averaged nearly seven yards per carry and over 71 rushing yards per game. His two long touchdown runs (64, 53) against Captain Shreve helped lead the Jackets to a 37‐14 win over their arch‐rivals. He added a 39‐yard score against Airline, then reeled off a season‐
high 86‐yard run in the Bi‐district playoff win over Natchitoches Central. THE X‐MAN DELIVERS Senior fullback Xavier Long finished the 2011 season ranked second on the team in rushing with 1,119 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was Byrd’s first 1,000‐yard rushing fullback since Brittain White rushed for 1,032 in 2007. The X‐Man rushed for a game‐ and a career‐high 198 yards in the Jackets’ 56‐21 playoff win over West Jefferson in 2011. He scored five rushing touchdowns against the Buccaneers which tied a school record held by four players. He was a 2011 First Team All‐District selection. Against Haughton, Long rushed for a season‐high 166 yards and scored two touchdowns to help lead the Jackets to a 27‐21 win. For his efforts, he was named The Times Prep Player of the Week. The X‐Man finishes his career with 1,897 yards and 27 touchdowns, which places him ninth on the school’s all‐time rushing list, and 10th on the scoring list. SHUFFLING THE DECK Head coach Mike Suggs utilized a number of running backs this season in his multiple option attack. Suggs shuffled the deck with his backs all season long, particularly the halfbacks. Seniors Tony Griffin and Jatorring Manning were listed as the starters at the beginning of the season. However, the senior duo shared time with sophomores Daniel Bacon and Dominic Haggerty. Louis Mills moved over from the defense toward the end of the season. The explosive jun‐
ior rushed for 152 yards and one touchdown in three games before being in‐
jured in the Airline game. He reinjured himself on the opening against Natchito‐
ches Central. Junior Keven Starks and sophomore Gabe McDonald were listed as Xavier Long’s backups at fullback. Suggs will have a plethora of returning backs in 2013. FEED JAKE A week after kicking a career‐long 42‐yard field goal against Shreve, sophomore Jake Wyss booted the Yellow Jackets to a district title with a 23‐yard field goal at Airline. Byrd drove 79 yards in 12 plays before calling upon the sophomore. Wyss drilled the game winner with five seconds remaining. Wyss made 5‐of‐7 field goal attempts this season, and had 17 touchbacks on kickoffs. Byrd Career Rushing Leaders Rk. Player (Years) 1. Justan Gibson (2004‐06) 2. Arlenzia Jackson (1987‐89) 3. BYRD STILL LOOKING FOR OPPONENTS IN 2013 Byrd coach Mike Suggs has endured a tremendous amount of difficulty schedul‐
ing opponents for the 2013 season. As of now, Suggs has only three of the five non‐district opponents scheduled. Byrd will open the 2013 season against the Zachary Broncos at Lee Hedges Stadium. For the third straight season, the Yel‐
low Jackets will participate in the Battle on the Border at Independence Sta‐
dium. Byrd will battle the Bastrop Rams in 2013 and are slated to face the West Monroe Rebels in 2014. The Jackets will renew their rivalry with the Ouachita Lions in week five, but weeks three and four remain open. There is a possibility Byrd could schedule a series with the Acadiana Wrecking Rams but as of now it has not been solidified. While the membership of District 1‐5A did not change, the district slate has. Beginning in week six, Byrd will play at Airline, home against Captain Shreve, at Parkway, at Southwood then home versus Haughton in the regular season finale. OUTLOOK IS BRIGHT FOR 2013 Despite losing approximately half of the starters on both sides of the football, the Byrd Yellow Jackets have a strong corps of players returning in 2013. Not only does Mike Suggs have half of the starters returning but he also has a solid group of experienced players who should be able to step into roles vacated by departed seniors. Suggs will likely turn to current sophomore Tyler Howard to take over at quarterback. Suggs will has a plethora of running backs to choose from, and loses just two offensive linemen. Jordan Powell returns to lead the receiving corps. Defensively, the Jackets lose key members like Jalen Bowers, Kieron Williams and Ja’Cory Wright but will return the bulk of a defense that held opponents to 255 yards and 21.9 points per game. Junior safeties Nick Pratt and Hayden Ellison will be back to lead the Purple Swarm. The defensive line should be stout as juniors Aaron Holloway, Zach Purcell and Chandler Nance all return. OVER THE AIRWAVES Byrd football is broadcasted live on AM 1130 KWKH ‐ The Tiger. Completing his 15th season of calling the play‐by‐play is “The Voice of the Byrd Yellow Jackets” Charlie Cavell. Darrell Rebouche joined Cavell in the booth to provide color com‐
mentary. Veteran broadcaster Marty Johnson patrolled the sidelines providing intriguing on‐field reports. Statistics were provided by Jimmie Talbot and Steve Baker. Fans can listen to Byrd football on the world wide web by going to 1130thetiger.com and clicking the listen live link. Smart phone users can download the Radio Pup app and select Shreveport, La. then choose AM 1130 The Tiger. A LOOK AHEAD The Byrd Yellow Jackets will open the 2013 season at home on against the Zach‐
