Course Format:
THIS IS A HYBRID COURSE. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO ACCESS D2L to take this
class. Tuesdays will be lectures, performances, discussion, listening, etc...
Lectures, Audio/Video Presentations, Performances.
Required Materials:
A computer or internet access-(
a notebook or some other way to take notesCourse Objectives:
To learn about Jazz from its pre -20th century origins into ragtime, the blues,
dixieland, swing, and the beginnings of bebop.To learn listening and
appreciation skills.
Course Content
Tuesdays will be lectures, performances, readings, listening, and going over some
of the powerpoint material. Tuesdays is the best time to ask questions or make
comments. I encourage an interactive class. The online material is simple. Every
week( 10 weeks) you will watch one Chapter of Ken Burn's Jazz and study at least
one powerpoint file. There are listening examples
( youtube) in the powerpoint files as well as additional videos. Every week you
will take a short online quiz (multiple choice) which will be based on the films
and the powerpoints. There may be some additional material as well.
Course requirements
Grades will be based on the Midterm(25 %), the Final(25%) , and online
quizzes(25%) given in class. You will also be required to attend 5 live
performances and email 5 short paragraphs describing those performances(25%).
Make Up Work:
If you are dissatisfied with your grade on quizzes or tests, you can boost your
grade by attending extra performances and submitting a paragraph or two
for each performance. Please email me or talk to me after class if you need to
do make up work.
